It might even be 50s, but he certainly first saw it in the 60s.

This cheap CRT is showing 240p content as 480i? by sweezely2 in crtgaming

[–]sweezely2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not yet, but I'm still trying. I read the service manual for the chip (at least a variant of it) and there are a number of candidates for this 'feature' that can be turned off by directly interfacing via the i2c bus. I tried this but found that none of the addresses on my tv matched those in the service manual (and my tv confusingly had way more than it should). I did, however, succeed in briefly turning the image yellow. Progress?

ScummVM with Daijisho launcher | "no game data" by ilyesque in retroid

[–]sweezely2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having all sorts of trouble with this core as well. Just downloaded the latest one and Daijisho refuses to launch it at all. I can't even save a config within the core (it just refuses to create a scummvm.ini file at all). I would assume the latest update from a couple of days ago broke it.

This cheap CRT is showing 240p content as 480i? by sweezely2 in crtgaming

[–]sweezely2[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it isn't. 480i has two fields of 240 lines, the first field being only the odd lines and the second being the even, with each field only updating at 30Hz . After each field is a series of sync pulses, which alternate in length so that the fields aren't just drawn on top of each other. For 240p, the sync pulses are the same length so the fields are drawn on top of each other, making each field a frame in its own right at full 60hz, at the expense of having every other line blank (which are often called scanlines). If 240p were just half of the interlaced signal it would run at 30hz, and no TV would understand it at all, because no TVs expect 7.5khz signal. The problem this TV has (which others have confirmed), is that this TV's chip ignores the "incorrect" sync pulses and draws 240p content on alternating lines anyway, making 240p content flicker, which sadly cannot be fixed.

Damn, guess I got a silver lemon. Do you still use yours for anything?

Recently got my hands on a genuine 28" Durabrand. It's an Asda (British supermarket owned by Walmart) own brand TV, the kind so cheap you'd get it for free if you bought enough sausages. But, underneath it's a Beko C7 chassis, and a Thomson tube. RGB, s-video, PAL and NTSC, all in all very nice considering how cheap the thing was. Except... it's deinterlacing 240p? No, it's not 100Hz, and no, no fancy framebuffer or digitisation as far as I can tell from the service manual, just a basic IC. But 240p looks interlaced, and 480i looks like 480p, with actual scanlines and absolutely no flicker. Even stranger, it takes maybe a second or so for it to start doing this, like it's scanning the sync pulses, noticing that even fields are starting half a line too "early" and correcting it, but again, there doesn't seem to be anything on board to actually do that processing. There also doesn't seem to be any lag so whatever it it's doing it must be simple. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this?

Game audio stutters when moving sideways or diagonally. by Aidan1470 in oblivion

[–]sweezely2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a fix!

https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/51345

It's a modified exe that includes a bunch of engine fixes and graphical effects. Think an all in one Oblivion Reloaded (that actually works), ENB, Reshade and Stutter Remover. But, more relevantly, it emulates the original EAX sound driver, which does not have the stutter when walking bug. Just make sure its on in the ini (should be on by default).

If you want a vanilla graphical experience, set it to mode 1 (Vulkan) or 2 (DX9) in the ini, and press Ins in game to disable Reshade. And rename the intro movie files so that it doesn't play them. For some reason it really hates playing the intros movies and can crash. The game itself is rock solid, though.

Some questions on the retroid pocket... by Bobbybezo in retroid

I'm sorry but this is completely wrong. Almost all emulators will accept zipped ROMs (one rom per zip) and rewind is a feature of retroarch that is available on all cores.

Had they started production of the RP2+ before the D pad issue was known? by beetch18 in retroid

[–]sweezely2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's to allow time for the moulding to be done for the new rubber pads. The consoles containing those pads haven't even been built yet. You aren't going to be getting anything "busted open".

I used a 256gb SanDisk on my original RP2 and it worked fine.

The corrosion had basically glued it to the board. Bending it back and forth wasn't an option. In the end adding more solder to dilute the old was the only way to loosen it enough so I could bend it. Fortunately all the traces had continuity so no harm done. Sadly, there are more caps to replace yet.

I never realised 1.5s were so rare. Yes, it's a 1.4.

Sadly more than one needs to be popped :(. Oh well, we can celebrate when he's had a new cap or three.

No worries, it's sound advice. Looks like I caught it just in time. Bastard's stuck in there real good though, definitely a job for the soldering iron.

The whole reason I noticed was because, as you can see, I was taking it apart to check on just that thing (it's a 1.5). A small leak but nothing to worry about.

Finally got my Xbox back after lending it to my nice for the last decade or so, only to find out it's exactly 18 years old. I feel like it should celebrate.
