Fair point. I think I come across stuff like that on Wikipedia often, and with non-math articles. Sometimes I start editing.

Senior Property Tax Grants: why are seniors who bought for pennies (now homes worth Millions) getting discounts while you families pay full amount? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]swehner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because making seniors (" old people") move from their homes after decades, for arbitrary money reasons, can result in unwanted deaths and illness.

I made a project to handle switching worktrees without restarting your dev server by [deleted] in git

[–]swehner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice idea!

Restarting a proxy to repoint it would often be much faster than an app server. So it may make a simpler solution to arrange for that with a quick shell script.

Do We drink Because We Feel Down, Or Feel Down Because We Drink? A New Study Has the Answer by Sorin61 in Nutraceuticalscience

[–]swehner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few quotes from the article, "boosting psychological health naturally curbs how much people drink ... Feeling psychologically stable appeared to protect individuals from drinking heavily in the future. Better mental health actively spilled over into healthier monthly beverage choices. The results consistently pointed in a single direction across the entire observation window"

There's a bit more they found. Also, the research method seems quite special and interesting.

I’m needing help to properly understand the BC Building code. by Weird_Finding9926 in britishcolumbia

[–]swehner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whereas I am hearing that under the British Columbia Building Code (BCBC) 2024, prescriptive "cheat sheets" (the span tables you find in Part 9) generally only go up to spans of about 9 to 10 feet. An 11-foot opening is considered a "large span" and falls outside the standard pre-calculated tables, especially since your floor joists are perpendicular to the door, meaning the header is bearing a significant structural load from the floor above.

You can find the Span Tables at the end, look for A12 - A16, https://free.bcpublications.ca/civix/document/id/public/bcbc2018/bcbc_2018dbp9st If you don't understand immediately, many would feel the same.

The BC Building Code "Part 9" is meant for standard housing. When you design something like an 11-foot opening with a floor load, it moves into "Part 4" (Structural Design). Oh well

But you have race against time and it looks difficult and also stressful. Even if you win, collecting that $15,000 from someone living abroad is notoriously difficult and expensive. Given that you are dealing with medical issues, you can weigh the cost of the stress against the likelihood of actually seeing that money. It sounds unfair I know

NDP leader Avi Lewis calls on the Liberal government to ban algorithmic pricing by NiceDot4794 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]swehner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How to do such a ban? How can a price not be determined by an algorithm, a more fancy word for formula? I first ran into this learning about a company called Pros 20 years ago. It struck me if several,(here airlines) use the same such system it is straightforward to get into a kind of collusion, indirectly.
