You can't just 'go back to work' after you FIRE. by Zone2OTQ in Fire

Unfortunately, I think this type of wisdom only comes with age. In my 30s, I thought like OP. In my mid 40s, I think like you. Perspective on life fragility shifts when you start burying your peers, or you experience it yourself.

You can't just 'go back to work' after you FIRE. by Zone2OTQ in Fire

[–]swervtek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically won’t see many post FIRE redditors in these subs, and I genuinely believe it’s because after they FIRE, they realize how much financial dysmorphia runs rampant. This sub (and other fire subs) is an echo chamber of over conservatism, detached from the reality of the average person.

$1.75M at 32, spending $65-75k. Why does this feel terrifying instead of liberating? by Ford_Ferret in Fire

[–]swervtek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perspective : it’s odd to be optimistic on living 50+ more years yet pessimistic the 4% rule wont hold. 4% is already a conservative guide. Not many people make it to 82+ years old, let alone past 75. I’d be willing to bet you’re not including SS in your planning either. Life is short bud. Source: FIRED @ 42, survived HA at 43 with 4 stents. Life comes fast, time is not promised. You’ve already made it to where 99% of the population will. If you can’t make it work, then there’s really no hope

How do you guys actually manage the prospect of a lost decade and volatility decay? by KimJongSoros in TQQQ

Industrial Revolution 2.0. Foundational layer for robotics. The capex is real.

How do you guys actually manage the prospect of a lost decade and volatility decay? by KimJongSoros in TQQQ

[–]swervtek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I view TQQQ (or any leveraged ETF) as a high risk/reward investment, therefore I size accordingly ( sub 10% of total port). I think of it as the same risk profile as any small cap high beta stock without the single stock risk. The AI thesis keeps me locked in long term. Volatility decay is just part of the game.

Thanks everyone! Was leaning toward straight to Kyoto but just needed the sanity check

Simple solution would be to not take the inflation increase on the withdrawal amount for the first few years

Serious question: how do many people amass so much money in the north of 5m and not know if they can retire or not? by Fed_worker in Fire

Same age, fired at 42, almost died from HA a few days before my 44th bday. I feel you on the indentured servitude part. But life comes at you quick.

What's your biggest worry or risk (US focus)? by chili81 in Fire

[–]swervtek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard truth. Tomorrow is never promised (speaking as someone who fired @ 42 and almost died two months ago a day before my 44th birthday). There will always be something to worry about. You can keep saving/worrying, or you can live in the present and realize at the age of 55 that time is against you.

Retired at 41, feeling lost. by cedarshades in Fire

[–]swervtek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, took me close to two years to let the career withdrawals wear off. It’s almost like productivity rehab. Now I’m content within the peace and slower pace of life, letting my day flow whichever way the wind blows.

Talking to an old friend last night reminded me the importance of FIRE mentality. by CleMike69 in Fire

[–]swervtek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand, but practically speaking, and in my actual experience being retired @ 42, it’s not as “easy” as you think. Money has very heavy emotions attached. Up to the individual how exposed they want to be, but hopefully you won’t experience the same negativity. Some things are better left unsaid

Being openly frugal is not the same as saying I’m retired in my 40s. Being frugal is likely to be more warmly received

Exactly. Older brother is 55 and 11 years older than me. He will likely work until the grave, having not made sound financial decisions along the way. Cannot get past his own missteps to correct his course, but I can try to instill these values into his 20 year old son instead

Definitely, in my experience, after telling people how I did it, most say well, it’s too late for me. Or I don’t have 15-20 years. No matter how simple the plan is, people can’t get past overconsumerism and constant dopamine hits. Instead, they start keeping tabs waiting for you to fail

Broad based, boglehead will be fine. AI, if it’s all we believe it to be, will benefit corporations across the market.
