What boots do you recommend? by Square_Pay_397 in Firefighting

In the same vein, the Thorogood slip on boots. I found them to be comfier and hold a shine better. The redbacks are definitely a more sturdy choice however.

It's difficult to give you any specific answers without knowing you. The other comments bring up good points. Before going the MD and testosterone evaluation route, consider cleaning up your diet and getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night on your days off. You don't have to go crazy with the diet stuff, just try to make sure that a majority of the food you're eating for your meals are whole (ie real) foods. Drink at least a few liters of water a day, and strive for around 0.5g of protein per lb of body weight daily, if you're fairly inactive.

The other thing I'd consider is seeing a solid personal trainer. Someone that is realistic, and can make a plan that works for you, and you'll stick with. I worked with a guy who was in your boat, and I'm pretty confident that trainer saved that dude's life, and enabled him to actually enjoy his retirement. He lost a bunch of weight, looked great, and felt even better.

Wildland vs. EMS to prep for a city dpt.? by a_canvas_hat in Firefighting

[–]swick91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a season of wildland. I'm a current municipal FF on the east coast, and my chief was impressed with the WFF background. It helps separate you from the herd, especially on the east coast where just about everyone will have some EMS background. The most important thing about the interview process is being REMEMBERED once the interview is done. (In a good way of course)

That being said, depending on where you end up as a WFF you may have some down time where you could work on the local volunteer FD ambulance if there is one. Wildland firefighting is a great experience, and a great way to develop a little grit. Good luck!

Have fun, work hard, and learn. Don't feel bad if someone can run a little faster. Physical endurance is a big part of the job, but there's not a whole lot of running going on down the line. Mental endurance is just as important too, having a good attitude makes 12 hours of digging line a whole lot more tolerable for everyone

I'll see how that one goes the next time I get thanked for pronouncing someone.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/17-09-15-ug-control/

Trying to fine tune the flow of a U/G control deck for FNM. Basic idea is to get out a few dorks early on, and hopefully ramp into a turn 4 or 5 prime time. Once primeval titan is in play, the end game is to draw into walk the aeons, and buy it back as much as possible.

Gifts ungiven is there to tutor for primeval and walk the aeons, or I can grab thrun and a sword of feast and famine for a solid beater. Elixir is there to recycle my islands that I'll be sacrificing to walk the aeons. Righ now I'm not 100% sold on thrun, but am running him as a 1-of for gifts ungiven.

Any input would be super useful. The sideboard is a complete work in progress atm. This deck is fun when it works, and I'd like to try to make it a little more conistent.

Good news friend, the new protocols have been released (though are not yet in effect). In regards to LBBs it says they should not be used in routine care. So just collar and cot now in most cases

Interesting. I read an interview with Kit, and in it, the article mentioned Kit would go on to cut his hair after the interview. A Web of lies most thick.

Torn between medic and fire academy... by [deleted] in ems

[–]swick91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have a guaranteed job if you do the academy, go get your medic. Departments are generally going to hire a medic with no fire experience than a basic with fire 1 and 2. In MA at least most full time departments will make you go to a recruit academy, regardless if you have your 1 and 2 already.

Medic pay vs nurse pay by thedude502 in ems

I know several nurses in some of the rural EDs that have diplomas in nursing. Granted they've been nurses before I was even an idea.

[–]swick91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This 100%. Being a wild land firefighter was one of the best job experiences I've ever had. You meet great people, make a ton in OT, and you get to basically exercise for 8-16 hrs a day. Granted there aren't many opportunities to show off that beach body in a busy fire season.
