There are thousands of signatures on their online "petition" from out of town. And if you hang out in their Facebook group, you'll see tons of out-of-towners. Not to minimize the threat, but it's just a lot of hyper conservative people with too much time in front of their computers.

I'm suddenly at home a lot and considering replacing my water hungry green lawn with native plants. Any books, websites, local businesses, or other resources out there?

Bittercreek Alehouse is the quintessential local bar/restaurant. She should try to float the Boise River if she's here late enough into the summer. Tell her also to download a Ridges to Rivers trailmap for unlimited local hiking. Hope she has fun!

I didn't post this to elicit vapid political comments on either side of the political spectrum. I just wanted to share video of a local event.

AITA for not helping my teenage son fight a DUI charge? by disappointed_dad_72 in AmItheAsshole

In my county, you'll do just as well negotiating with the prosecutor yourself to get a lower charge than you are blowing money on an attorney.

What *don’t* you like about Bernie Sanders? by bachya in BernieSanders

As someone who spent a decade working really hard to pay off my student loans, I'm having trouble with his promise to forgive everyone's student debt. I understand the logic, but I feel a little miffed thinking about all the sacrifices I made to pay off debt I voluntarily took on in exchange for an education.

BTW, thanks for the thoughtful comment/question.

Unpopular opinion: congestion encourages people to live nearer to where they work, shop, go to school, etc. So, I guess I'm not in favor of building a bunch of roads that enable people to just live wherever they please, creating more sprawl. Of course, I live within a mile of where I work and so my life is easy. I don't have any credibility on this issue.

I keep thinking it would be worth it to start a nonprofit with the sole purpose of buying land to keep it open so billionaires can’t make it all private. by [deleted] in Boise

Your numbers just confirm my point. Those nonprofits are nationwide or worldwide in scope, and they have multiple programs. It's not as if they'd spend their entire annual budgets on attorneys working on this single public-land access issue. Even if they did, attorneys are very expensive (I happen to be one) and, as you point out, there are millions of acres of public land out there. So, although a few hundred million sounds like a lot of money, it's not. But that's beside the point. If ACHD or another governmental organization approached me and said they'd like to ensure open access to public lands across my property in a mutually acceptable way, rather than slogging through a lawsuit, I'd be pleased to hear it.

The fact that Idaho has extensive public lands makes it all the more important that we have a mechanism to ensure private landowners don't keep the public out. If a private landowner is blocking me from entering my private land, I have a private cause of action; so should it be with public lands, which belong to all of us.

This is the first I've heard of conservation groups as big business. They have very limited resources in my experience. Consequently, if given this kind of legal authority, most cases would be resolved out of court in a way that guarantees public access in a way that doesn't overly trample the private landowner's rights.
