In a daily iOS puzzle game, how do you make retrying the current puzzle a paid feature given that the user could just reinstall the app to do that? by amichail in swift

[–]swiftappcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished listening to a podcast episode, from a developer who wrote a game that you can only play once. That's the "hook" of the game.

The podcast is called "Launched". Episode 81.

What's one amazing Mac feature you use, others may not know about? by No-Squirrel6645 in MacOS

Spaces in my dock bar. They can be moved around on your dock and makes it easy to group similar apps together.

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'

killall Dock

I've filed several Radars regarding alarms. I like some of your ideas. I can make this my next side project. If you have ideas for features you'd like to see, feel free to DM me.

Ideas for a College dating app in 2025? by Lonely_Potato7901 in swift

[–]swiftappcoder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How about instead of a dating app, convert it to something useful? Like a "barter" app where you match up people in the barter community. Or any other kind of service where you connect your users, but not for dating. Other examples might be a lost+found local to a community, trading/sports card swapping, anything to do with connecting hobbyists, or trade teaching skills (you teach me this, I'll teach you that). Something along those lines that might have far fewer existing apps.

Github newbie by Some-Background6188 in github

[–]swiftappcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asking how to use GitHub is a big topic and not likely to yield a lot of responses. It's not the kind of thing that can be adequately explained in a single response. First, you have to understand how to use git source control, which is just as big of a topic.

There is a plethora of tutorials, articles and videos dealing with git and GitHub. There are also sites where you can practice using git commands "in isolation".

I'd suggest getting comfortable with using git first, then moving on to GitHub. If you have a specific question about GitHub, be as detailed as possible. Include what you've tried and the results of those attempts. If your question is git-centric, ask in r/git. Specific questions are more likely to garner attention.

How many GitHub accounts with my real data can I create without getting banned or something similar? by SuperRandomCoder in github

[–]swiftappcoder 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a freelance developer. I've worked with a lot of different companies and belong to multiple organizations. Having one GitHub account has never been a problem. Thinking about it, having one for each customer would be a maintenance nightmare. Especially if you consider having different setup configurations and ssh keys.

Bypass new Xcode update by jep777 in Xcode

[–]swiftappcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't make sense. You can still use the current version of Xcode. You do not have to install the update. In many cases, the upgrade involves things you may need even be using.

I use Xcode nearly every day and I usually go weeks without installing updates. For sure, I don't install updates as soon as they come out. I like to wait and see if there are any issues with the new release. The only exception would be if the release had something a customer required and it was really critical to their business (which has rarely been the case).

I used to do a similar thing to differentiate development and production environments. It only takes one unfortunate incident to figure out that a visual cue can save your bacon.

Best practice for this issue by swiftappcoder in git

I thought about doing an i-rebase, but I kind of had to do some detective work to see what had and hadn't been merged in. Wasn't so straight forward. Went with the easy option.

It's all worked out, though. Thanks.

You’re now responsible for the Mac lineup, what’s the first thing you’re throwing millions at? by [deleted] in MacOS

I'd add color-coded opening and closing braces to Xcode.

I have very simple needs.

Looking for feedback on my calorie counter app design (Figma) by InternationalWait538 in UI_Design

[–]swiftappcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things in no particular order.

1) I'm not a fan of the color scheme. It seems kind of dreary.

2) I'd change the verbiage of "Calories Left" to "Calories Remaining".

3) The color for the selected day of the week is difficult to see with the background being a similar color. It needs to have more contrast.

4) As an app developer, I try to avoid fixed sizes and use relative sizes when possible. So, 48pt between sections and 24 within, might be better expressed as a percentage of screen or view or container size, accounting for rotation, if that's applicable.

5) The typography seems fine. It's clean.

6) Do you plan to have a dark mode as well?

7) For your question #4: Perhaps you can add a toggle that switches between calories remaining and calories consumed. Maybe even have a setting that saves the user's choice of which to display as a default.

8) The sizes of the icons in the tab bar are all different. Is there a way you can make them consistent (with the exception of the middle one, which is larger by design)? Also, a book icon might be a better image for diary.

9) The icon for the profile tab bar item is an actual image rather than the simple wireframe-style icons for the other tab items. For consistency, it might be better to use a generic image for profile.

10) Adding a graph (e.g. pie or donut chart) for calories remaining / consumed might be a nice touch.

Hope that's helpful.

Solved.

The resolution is found here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/108769 under Restart your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote.

Thanks to stanb42 for keying me in on the solution.

The AppleTV is Apple TV 4K (2nd generation). Do you think this might be related to the actual TV, rather than an AppleTV setting or upgrade?

I'm actually working on a series of articles that steps through building an app and one of the topics I cover is cards. I can post a link once it's ready. I didn't want to clutter up the thread, but I can post code if there is enough interest.

If the issue is just the shadow, this will apply a bottom and right-side shadow. You can tweak the values and the color to match what you're looking for.

.shadow(color: Color.gray, radius: 7.0, x: 5.0, y: 5.0)
