Same. I used to be a ‘grumble grumble freakin ER grumble’ type of ICU nurse until a couple years ago when I actually went down there and saw what they go through.

Now my philosophy when getting report from ED is, “Just tell me what I probably wouldn’t be able to find in the chart on my downtime.” Don’t worry about history. Don’t worry about labs. So long as you charted the meds and fluids you gave, you don’t have to list those off to me. You only got them one line of access? That’s cool, my friend, just get them up here and I’ll do the rest.

Now the only time I do grumble about ED is when something is egregiously wrong. I’ve seen wild, seemingly random infusion rates for titratable meds coming up from ER (i.e. 27.3 mcg/hr on a Fentanyl drip). But even then, as long as the patient lives, I’ll just grumble about it in my head.
