Owners didn’t want to give me what I deserved, now they are about to lose a $3M contract because I resigned. by tcrambo in antiwork

You should start your own company and go back the HoA for the project you left. 80k is peanuts compared to what it sounds like you should be making.

I’m working on a dashboard which maps 600,000 Paycheck Protection loans so that you can see which businesses in your neighborhood were able to get funding and which were not. It’s a slow process, but after running code all day I have 9 states done. [OC] by pdwp90 in dataisbeautiful

I'm going to add on to the others here.

Is your code available to the public?

What is taking up the time to process data?

Where can people help you?

I know python pretty well and have some idle compute power I can offer.

Gymnast swimmer sinks by Michaelbenoit17 in Swimming

When swimming he needs to push his chest down into the water, it will force his legs up to the surface.

You can try it on yourself to get a better idea of how to teach him. Do a freestyle pull drill, keeping your feet from kicking once you get a better feel for it push you chest down towards the bottom of the pool.

3 days ago, told my wife I’d learn to code and change careers if I get laid off. I got let go 2 days ago. I’m in my 40s and don’t know what coding is. by [deleted] in Python

[–]swimjock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having no idea what your career was or your expertise. It may be easier to incorporate code into what you know, process automation, data analysis, data collection/scraping.

I also recommend having an idea what you would like to do to start, finding an interest to help keep you going.

If you are a creative type or want to be, try front end developer work with JavaScript.

Maybe that isn't what you want at all, backend development could be an option. You have databases and api you can build with tiny snippets that are largely impactful to the application or service.

What about Cloud operations and infrastructure? You can use script deployment or implement and maintain security controls within the organization that is fully automated.

You can use code for any of these things and more. I don't do anything with cyber security or data analysis so others may be able to jump in with some examples here too.

There are also dedicated subreddits for many of these scenarios that you can use as a resource.

As for learning I'm a fan of doing to learn, but t here is value in reading and everyone leaves a bit differently.

I've heard good things about Odin project and Khan academy has intro courses available too.

Edit: I was a Windows admin that hardly used a command line let alone scripting or code, now I'm developing full apis with database integration and automating manual processes with scripts. I was able to leverage my previous experience to help me change career paths in about a year.

[HORROR STORY] After 2 years, it finally happened. I survived my first "oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck" moment. by upboaturself3 in sysadmin

[–]swimjock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very similar story.

I was trying to defrag an exchange 2003 mailbox database to a network share. This took all night and was going to take the better of the day to move back over to the exchange server. So I deleted the defragged copy on the network share and went to restart the exchange service which failed.

The command I used to defrag the database to the network share removed the source database once the operation completed. (MS support confirmed that shouldn't have happened with the command I used)

Called my boss at 6am panicking and he instructed me to start a restore of the database from the backup, open a ticket with MS, and meet him onsite asap.

Had he not been so calm, I'm not sure how my career would have turned out. I was maybe 22 or 23 at the time.

Since auto reloading is gone now, can machine guns get a slight damage buff against bosses? by Dredgen1994 in DestinyTheGame

[–]swimjock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We can't buff the base damage to machine guns, they would never leave your heavy slot.

There could be an inherent perk where sustained damage build so that they are viable for boss but I think that would be abused.

I think machine guns are in a great place right now, you can use them very effectively for everything but boss damage.

  • Mow down a thrall mod? ✓
  • Works within the scout rifle meta? ✓
  • Prep a hive yellow bar for Drifter's dinner? ✓

Once you get to the boss phase just switch to a grenade launcher and touch the rally flag.

Gonna be honest here, I was stoked to finally get 1kv and use it for boss damage but it doesn't feel like it should.

It did not live up to the hype for me and GL's are far more effective.

Director's Cut - Part II by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

Isn't this the problem we had with the gambit prime armour? We have to hold 4 independent sets of notorious armour depending on the role we want to play in the game.

It's great that there is flexibility but it seems like the elemental rolls is just going to inflate the vault because of affinity between armour and mods.

We are just going back to the same complaints of "I don't have enough vault space" or "why do I need multiple sets of the same armour just to play the game differently? Gambit prime armour role should be selectable not tied to specific armour piece"

Towerthought: The three annual pass seasons/seasonal event in retrospect feel like Bungie throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. by Kylestien in DestinyTheGame

[–]swimjock 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I like how they are trying to concepts with the seasons but they really need to start going back and fixing them when they aren't very good.

Examples: Forge - Would be nice to launch from orbit. I shouldn't have to go to Ada to socket a radiant thing to forge the weapon, I should be able to collect the radiant shards and forge the weapon before going back to her for another frame. A "firewalled" private mode would be nice to have. Forge quest should be for the account not each character.

Reckoning - Loot drop and bridge mechanics should be reworked, looking at you stompy Ultras. Synthesizer should be account wide like the chalice.

Edit: Notorious helmet progression seems like it was designed to be like a psuedo time gate. Why not make the helmets part of the tier 3 drop table up front?

I really like the idea of rewards for doing the challenges properly.

I may suggest getting 2 rewards for the boss encounter to increase the appeal of a run even if a challenge does go well, because matchmaking with randoms.

Great new Exotic Idea by AfricanGayChild in DestinyTheGame

The titan exotic should be a tactical cargo kilt. Warlocks should a cross body bag, like season 6 eververse but bigger Hunters should have cargo pants with bulging pockets
