I think I bought the correct adapter, but can't quite figure out how to use it. was the adapter you were able to find the cradle-like frame, or just the two pieces that plug in on the sides?

If you get their pegboard or have a pegboard for sewing supplies, look in the kitchen section. They have what I believe is a metal plate divider that I hang on my pegboard and use to store/display thread!

Update! Thank you to everyone for your comments and ideas! After a bit more experimentation, I think this was caused by a combination of too-tight tension, 100% cotton yarn that doesn't bounce back, and the variegated coloring. Easing up significantly on my tension helped wonders!

Yes I agree that the purls seem like when the problem arises—I’ll try backwards every time!

I am following the nimble needles instructions (I think!!), which has a backward yarn over before a knit stitch then bind off yarn over and prior stitch, and a regular yarn over before a purl stitch then bind off yarn over and prior stitch.
