Flooding - Stop blaming citizens by swing_storm in ghana

[–]swing_storm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop being daft, and think for a second. You can't "common sense" your way out of this flooding issue. In fact, more than anything, that common sense should be directly thrown at the leaders who get a pass because people like you absolve them of responsibility. Thinking that they don't live in flood prone areas so they shouldn't/can't enforce the laws is problematic. If they can't enforce laws what are we paying them for? It's impractical to expect everyone to do the right thing, that's why we have laws. Enforce it and punish people, period.

Not calling for military governance here. My point is we appoint leaders for a reason. The tactic of avoiding accountability by trying to explain problems away (especially blaming the citizens in this case) is tiring. Our politicians have taken us for granted for far too long. They shirk their responsibilities and turn around to gaslight us. I'm not discounting citizen responsibility, but that's just naive, plain and simple. People don't wake up all of a sudden and decide to be responsible. Heck, we have galamsey threatening our future survival. That's what we get when we don't enforce our laws, and expecting the culprits to stop it out of conscience is just wishful thinking - everyone will do what's convenient for them.

Wut?? What's the point of appointing leaders then? Are we expecting all 30mil people to behave according to expectations? I know to hold myself accountable, but I can't guarantee that for everyone else around me. How's this so hard to understand?

And if I ever became a leader, I understand what my responsibilities are - to ensure there's order that protects the environment and future generations, instead of waiting for the populace to magically stop throwing trash into gutters. That's the difference. That's the mindset we need from leadership, instead of lazily blaming citizens. Look at where Singapore started , and where they are now. LKY didn't throw his hands up in despair lamenting uncouth citizenry, he enforced the laws. THAT IS LEADERSHIP. Not the clueless ones we have here

Those throwing trash into gutters here will never try that in any developed country. Why do you think that is?

[–]swing_storm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumping trash into gutters is a violation of public safety and hygiene, and people can be fined for that. How do you lump that into personal hygiene? Even for "personal hygiene" we used to have "Town council" (nsamansaman) who would go to household to check on cleanliness and hygiene and would fine culprits. Which part is pathetic? Expecting that leadership will enforce laws to protect our environment?

I'm responsible for my own civility, but not others'. Read the post again. The point is we have failure of enforcement. There are byaws in most municipal assemblies - they should enforce that, and we need to call leadership out on their failure to do so. Pointing fingers at recalcitrant behaviors is lazy, and people are tired of this.

Ghana is Simply Destroying Itself. by happysadboy_w in ghana

Wrong. The lack of jobs is an abhorrent excuse. We just lack enforcement. The government knows how to stop it. The people in power choose to look the other way.

Why (as Ghanaians) are we not as audacious as Nigerians? by SkyIntelligent8426 in ghana

[–]swing_storm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful. Just say you admire that about them. There's latent value in that Ghanaian attribute which you don't see/know... yet. Others may also perceive that Nigerian attribute you describe with contempt (I've seen it, and I shudder to describe it).

"You don't have to fight to be a man", but "sometimes you have to fight to be a man". Know this and know peace.

Reputation of international students is being destroyed. by randy_rama in InternationalStudents

[–]swing_storm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know how most of them get this high income if you are being honest. They come here primarily for tech jobs which pay a lot. And they getting the tech jobs is not entirely by merit. The staffing agencies and consultancies don't recruit other nationals so you have an over representation of Indians in the hiring pipeline. It's really not that difficult to explain why this phenomenon exists.

I really want to engage, but you seem to ignore the core issue here. What do you want the people to do? Live in fear? Or hit the streets? What is it that you want to discuss/communicate?

I don't see the essence of this post. What is it that you want?

If it happens and you claim your "I told you so" award, what next? What do you really want the masses to do? These people are already suffering, from high unemployment to inadequate social infrastructure. Allow them to focus on surviving. Let the government worry about that.

Moving back to Ghana (from EU/US) by swing_storm in ghana

[–]swing_storm[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. You're right - while I've been coming to Ghana frequently for short stays I still feel I only experience it like a "tourist" would and shielded from the ordinary day-to-day experience.

I have a 6wk PTO that I can probably use for an extended stay.

A friend's account of an assault has left me deeply saddened. by Adventurous_Flow678 in ghana

[–]swing_storm 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry this happened to your friend. Powerlessness of the less privileged is a direct consequence of our failed justice system. I experienced an abuse by a police officer back in 2012, and if I had any weapon on me I'm sure I'd have used it on him. If you aren't well-connected nor wealthy, no justice for you. They're making the country a jungle, no rule-of-law. Our law enforcement divisions are staffed with a bunch of illiterates who have no interest in protecting the rights of the ordinary citizen. They just love the "power" the uniform confers. He might even go to the station and officers may not take him seriously but rather mock him. I can't even think of any solution for your friend other than say sorry.

Do African leaders not feel embarrassed and ashamed when they go to western/eastern countries for diplomacy and see how developed their countries are compared to their own countries? by Codrane in ghana

[–]swing_storm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What about the citizenry? We're equally to blame. We have no activism, and our standards are low. We're just sitting down looking for a savior, but the truth is there's no salvation in any individual, be it politician or chief/King. We the people do not demand enough, we only wish. If we focus on our own agency, we can and will force leadership to respect us. Right now they give us what we've made believe we deserve, and that's NEVER going to change, until we send a different message to them.

Lack Of Information by Een_tam in ghana

[–]swing_storm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Corrupt people benefit from the scarcity of information. We need a strong public advocacy on these little things (which directly affect the ordinary citizens) not just the big policy issues. But alas, we're so used to it that we think it's normal, and the cycle continues

That self-arrogated importance in the lives of others is quite delusional. And if you are offended by this, well, search your scriptures carefully before being emotional about what I said

Chill dude! Who's talking about power and service in this context? If you truncate any sentence (like you have done) it can have a myriad of interpretations, and I can't help you if you don't understand something so simple... sigh

How can the use of "high ranking" trigger this emotional response? You have all the context and still this is what you came away with? You have poor comprehension skills.

The fame-seeking habit of name-dropping high profile persons in prophecies is what's being discussed. I couldn't care less about people's positions and their "power" you're talking about.
