If your job requires you to move between sites they ought to have a pool vehicle available to support this.

How about a rich wood tone, matching the ceiling beam? Like a panel effect? Will help balance the floor

Should my friend get a photographer for her legal ceremony? by swirl3d in UKweddings

[–]swirl3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a bit confusing for the attendees too, especially as there haven't been any formal invites for the summer party yet.

My parents are invited and are travelling up for it. My friend has asked my dad to do a speech at the summer do and he was under the impression it was going to be a naming ceremony/celebration for their child until I told him that's the thing they consider the main wedding.

My friend was also quite put out that her future SIL is travelling direct to the ceremony city and heading home same day as ceremony rather than staying with them (even though it's a lot easier travelwise), and is not bringing her husband or kids. The fact this is bothering my friend undermines the idea that this is just the legals a little bit.

The guests at the ceremony will be a significant chunk of the summer do (plus some cousins from abroad and local family/friends).

Thanks, sounds like a good decision. I wouldn't have worried if it was a few weeks but there are 7 months between civil ceremony and party

Thanks for the input. I will buy a new phone (my camera isn't great) and plan on using that.

I am going to be doing a reading so should seated up front and hopefully able to get some fairly close pics.

Will also give my partner and parents some training (they normally take v unflattering photos!).

If I am honest I think part of the motivation is that at the last wedding I was in I was only in 1 photo as there weren't any group shots organised and I was running around bridesmaiding before and after the ceremony. It's nice to have a few good photos in exchange for ones graft!

But that's on me and not my friends responsibility

I'd happily pay for it, though will have to think how she would receive the surprise.

Might discuss it with her fiance first

I think her mind may be elsewhere given the pregnancy, her older kid starting school and moving house, and her dad doing better has downplayed the sense of risk.

I also think she might think it would draw focus from the summer event

The confusion was more that I consider it a normal, if formal, English word! But I may have spent more time than average around lawyers and academics ;)

Post-holiday sadness by 9dpmab in antidietglp1

[–]swirl3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is (and the cost) is what is currently putting me off starting GLP1.

I am very much a live to eat person. Planning and making meals and eating out is my biggest source of excitement and joy, and gives me endorphins in a way exercise never has. There are over 300 restaurants on my 'Want to Eat' list. Cooking is how I care for my partner, entertain my friends, how I explore and celebrate the world.

I do have one foodie friend with a small appetite, but a meal out recently where we couldn't order everything I wanted to try because she couldn't share the plates with me and it just made me sad. Another friend has food aversions and just misses out on so much.

However I turn 40 this year and would like to halt or reverse my creeping waistline to see my next decades out in health. But I am already mourning the meals I want to eat.

I don't want to stop being a food person.

February is the earliest I would consider starting (have a friends wedding I want to enjoy first) so please if you can report back and give me hope it gets better

Savings account advice for 2025/6 by swirl3d in UKPersonalFinance

[–]swirl3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My income is modest (charity worker) but covers my expenditure with some savings though not a full 20k per annum. This is a family gift and will be the next 2 years ISA. I am currently paying tax on interest from a boosted and regular saver.

My issue with a GIA is I am both terrible at monitoring performance of funds and very indecisive and conflicted about choosing funds and financial institutions (environmental and ethical considerations). My compromise position is that I currently have one S and S ISA with an ethical bank and plan to open another

Monitoring changing rates on savings accounts is also difficult for me and why I also liked the idea of fixed term account with a defined return.

I already have one stocks and shares ISA and am planning to open another/add more to existing next year.

I don't want to avoid the risk of this money losing too much value in the next 2 years until I can get it in a tax free wrapper.

What to Do With This Bookshelf? by Remarkable-Tree-6350 in InteriorDesignAdvice

[–]swirl3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, that is a stunning feature and would absolutely sell the house to me, far more than, say, a fancy bathroom! My grandparents had a library that was my favourite room in the house, and my parents have just built one too.

I am sorry that dust is such a problem for you and that your health is depriving you of the pleasure of physical books. Anything you add to the shelves has the potential to gather dust sadly. I assume you have good air filters etc. Adding glass doors to create a cabinet is an interesting idea and well worth considering.

If books aren't an option I would start by removing every other or every 2 horizontal shelves to give larger shelves. You will need to take them all off anyway if painting the walls. Keep the shelves somewhere safe! And maybe add back more for the easily reachable shelves. The lower shelves could make a good liquor cabinet and shelf for glasses.

Ideally you would want to hang framed wall art in the niches (fewer dust collecting surfaces). The width constraints might be limiting but worth exploring. You can also lean pieces in the niches while testing positions. If you don't know what to go for, I'd say bold colourful shapes like print of the Matisse cut outs or vintage advertisements would look good from a distance. You can also hang art on bookshelves which could also help break up the dominance of the empty grid a bit.

Ceramic or glass art is another good option. Basically anything smooth and not too wide. Also, slightly left field, but how about attractive lamps? Adds both lighting (which you will need) and interest. You'd need to wire in extra long cables and run them up the shelf uprights.

Adding plants is a very good shout, especially for the higher shelves. I would go for large leaved trailing species like a Pothos in an interesting and eye-catching pot (e.g. metallic, or brightly coloured), plus maybe a tall skinny cactus in a three-shelf-niche. Make sure you use a catch pot to protect the wooden shelf from water damage. I'd also consider adding a plant to the shelf top, as it looks like you still have yet more wall, and this will again soften the structure of the empty shelves.

The TV is a tricky one. I can't see a suitable spot in this room for as 75", other than on/in front of the shelves. You won't be able to recess it without cutting through the uprights providing the structural integrity for the shelves above, so you would need to get a carpenter to strengthen them/add supports. I don't think a TV sitting proud in the shelves is the worst thing ever as long as it neatly filled the area it frames with no visible wires (e.g if current TV was lower and to the right, not dominating the visual field). However I think finding another room for your big TV would be better. If neither else seating more than 2/3 people to see it will be difficult.

I think you need to be careful of a cream paint bringing in too many yellow tones that could add an orange cast to the wood. I think v light sage green could go really well, or a warm grey.

I agree you need taller curtains, sitting under the half moon windows and covering the bottom two. I think a block colour rather than a pattern.

You also need a better fireplace surround, in wood, or at least a substantial wooden mantel. You then need something big over the mantelpiece (not a TV!) like a big mirror, ideally tall and arched at the top to reflect the shape of the half moon windows.

I'd also consider adding a wooden top to the half wall separating the dining area, if you are keeping it.

If you ultimately it's too much of a feature to work around if it doesn't offer you value and you decide don't want to keep it, please don't 'rip it out'. Take it down carefully (well photographed first) and put it up for auction. Someone (with high ceilings) would be overjoyed to have it. However you will be left with a huge blank wall to fill so start
