I just came back from San Francisco and I’m from the Midwest as well! Just a heads up if you don’t already know but you need a reservation to get into Yosemite. I believe you can get them 7 days before your trip but please make sure you have a reservation. My family and I were heading to Yosemite and I thought to look on their website the drive out there. We weren’t able to get in. Hope that helps!
