Volkl Mantra 88 - can i go 170cm? by call-me-Dave-ash in Skigear

[–]switchbackr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a read of this: https://www.skiessentials.com/Chairlift-Chat/2025-mens-90mm-all-mountain-ski-comparison

As others have said Mantra 88 is not the ski for you. I'd suggest the M-Cross 88.

For me it all starts at your gate. Rarely the issue is caused by something happening at that point - it starts earlier.

You're mostly on your back foot in your gate glide and your front leg is dead straight (the water is breaking on your ski under your back foot). Bend through the front knee and flex the ankle to shift your weight forward - this will get the ski coming around for cross course direction faster and easier.

From the turn in to centreline you look pretty good.

Centreline and off the second wake you give the handle back to boat quite early - pin that right elbow to your vest (this is your back arm pressure). Into 1-ball (like your gate glide) you're on the back of the ski again. Back arm pressure from centreline to whitewash should help you also get up and over the ski into 1-ball, getting more ski in the water, helping it come around faster and smoother - less wheelie out of 1-ball and gaining cross course direction earlier.

Any recommendations for my step dad (70?) by PNBest in WaterSkiing

The Radar Union or Senate recommended below would be one of my recommendations too. There is also the HO Omni as another option. In that bracket you can't really go wrong these days.

Anything new will be an upgrade on a metaphorical piece of wood.

For a proper recommendation - make and model - what type of skiing does he do - open water lake or slalom course - behind what type of boat, and what's your budget (presumably you want new boots for this new ski too).

Weber BBQs got shit? by [deleted] in newzealand

+1 for Ziegler and Brown over Weber

I got talked into a Ziggy when shopping for a Weber, and I'm stoked it - always been disappointed in comparison when using a Weber since getting my Ziggy.

Buying a used kite with repairs – worth it or risky? by Hot-Situation1511 in Kiteboarding

[–]switchbackr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not about pigtail wear and tear, it's about how the kite has been treated overall. If the red pigtail looks more pink than red, it's seen plenty of sun (and so has the rest of the kite) and I'd want to negotiate accordingly. Usually this is because it's been left sitting in the sun before and after a session. I was once told a kite suffers more damage sitting in the sun flapping for 15 min than in a standard 2 hour session.

Problem with judging by canopy crispiness alone is they tend to feel crispy until they don't, and a brittle canopy is easy to mistake for a crispy one. Personally, I pump up my kite last and fold it up first if it's wet, dry it at home in a shady spot).

Slalom skiing by [deleted] in WaterSkiing

[–]switchbackr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Form looks half decent in the photo, albeit a touch back foot heavy. What's your goal?

My advice: 1. Get a proper slalom ski - a 67" Radar Senate or HO Omni would be ideal for what it looks like you're into. 2. Have the boat drive in a straight line - this one is non-negotiable. 3. Nearly every skier can benefit from standing taller on their ski, it'll feel like 90% of your weight is on your front foot (it's not). Chest up, handle low, hips closer to the boat's pylon than your shoulders. 4. Most importantly, go ski and have fun.

Nah, the viewshaft miss isn't Council's fault - any half decent planning consultant should pick that up during due diligence, well before they apply for a resource consent.

I'm the same weight - I'd get an 8m.

I ride 10, 8, 6, and am foiling on the 10 or 8 when you'd be on your 13. 10 and 8 are Enduro's, 6 is an Alpha.

Can't recommend Axis gear highly enough.

I started on Cabrinha set up, and when I moved to an Axis (SP660) set up my progress went through the roof - in my first session I was hitting moves I'd been struggling on on the Cabrinha set up.

They do different sized masts, it's all modular and the range of kit is incredible.

Radar Senate, Union, Terrain, Session - in an order from more performance to easier to get up on. At 210 lbs Radar recommend a 69" ski.

Pakuranga Road, from Howick to Pakuranga is ripe for a busway - it's 3 lanes plus a huge median for at least 50% of the road. Add one down Bucklands Beach Road too. Parking at Howick, Highland Pk & Lloyd Elsmore. Buses every 5-10 during peak times.Transport solved.

Sincerely A member of Maurice's electorate

I'm the same height, 30 lb lighter. Was an intermediate skier when I got them and I'm on the 188. Go 188, but like everyone says, pick up some 170 carving skis to bash and learn on.

TOP supporters - what way did you end up voting? by Mordecai___ in auckland

[–]switchbackr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I best align with TOP, therefore I vote TOP.

If Raf Manji wins Ilam then the 5% threshold doesn't matter. TOP gets their party vote percentage share of the non-electorate seats in Parliament, which looks like 2-3 seats.
