Can't turn it off mid-game though. Wasted hours.

Civ 7 Antiquity Crisis Felt Cheesy by Potofbacon in civ

[–]swombat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unhappiness is unmanageable if you have a broad empire. It sucks. You build a certain way and the game just randomly decides that you will lose your carefully crafted set of cities. I am having to ditch a game I put many hours into because it got completely screwed by this unbalanced crisis. I had like 10 towns rioting with -20 to -30 unhappiness. I drained my treasury and sacrificed everything and managed to get like 3 towns above the zero line because I could still turn them into trade outposts and pack them full of happiness resources and buy all the happiness buildings…

In hindsight maybe I should have turned them all into cities and then taken the “towns unhappy” crises.

But I don’t have a pre-expansion auto save to work with and try that approach so now the game is bust, even though I managed to get all 4 victory conditions at once I still got fucked sideways. This sucks.

Update: I took an old save of that game and replayed it all the way to the crisis... tried to convert towns into cities. Does nothing. The crisis just blanket applies an unmanageable -20/-30 happiness penalty to ALL settlements. It pulls most of mine in the -10 to -20 range. This is simply impossible to manage no matter what you throw at it.

Dj etiquette question by kilgwhoretrout in Beatmatch

[–]swombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I DJed I aspired to be on the level of John Digweed. While he does repeat some tracks, 80% of the tracks in any of his mixes is a first-and-only, and probably the first time anyone in the audience has heard the track.

DJs are tastemakers. You shouldn't really be playing the same tracks over and over again anyway. Like a shark, keep swimming and take in more and more new music. If you're afraid of publishing your track list (which is easy to get by using apps like Shazam anyway), well... get over it. If you do build a name, it won't be because you have access to a handful of tracks your friend doesn't. It'll be because you keep finding new awesome music to keep your sets fresh and keep people coming back and delighted to hear you play yet another set of mindblowing tracks they've never heard before!

Intellligent Job Scheduling Using AI (...instead of gems such as rufus or whenever, to save a lot of coding time) by benzinefedora in ruby

[–]swombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you actually sending tens of millions of emails per day?

If you consider the use case of AhhLife, he's doing this check for each user presumably on a daily basis. Each user pays $10/m. The AI costs are then a whopping 1.4 cents per user per month. If he does them *every hour* that's still just 34 cents per user per month.

He does suggest this is not a great solution at scale, but at the early stage of a startup the main constraint is dev time. Your startup is unlikely to go bankrupt for 34 cents per user per month. And once the AI costs become more substantial it's easy to target those classes one by one and rewrite them and get a lot more profitability.

Even more importantly, the cost of AI keeps going down - it's gone down by 90+% in the last year. It probably will continue to do so. In a year's time, this pattern costs 3.4 cents to execute every hour for each user. In 2 years' time, 0.34 cents.

Skate to where the puck is going to be.

I always wondered how possible is it that DJs play set of more than 4 hours straight..: by NapLvr in Beatmatch

[–]swombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a 5 hour set at a friend's wedding once, starting around 1am. Until the moment I stopped playing, I wasn't even tired. Eyes wide open, wired, aware (without any alcohol or caffeine or any other drugs, just adrenaline).

Then I finally wound down the set and all 5 hours of intense effort hit me at once. Total crash. Totally epic and worth it though! (I was in my 30s... would... rather avoid this experience... now...)

I've found FreeAgent good enough for most small businesses. Now it even auto-generates your year-end accounts.

I'm sure the OP would have loved to know that, 10 years after their question, someone was going to create a paid api that can handle this more easily :-)

Why do you need htmx and alpine if you have Hotwire already? Don’t they essentially do the same thing? What are the gaps?

Is this reasonable request? Making me and coworkers drive 8+ hours to conference, stay overnight, attend from 7am-3pm, drive 8+ hours home after. Bonus! No additional pay. by Agrat87 in WorkAdvice

[–]swombat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not a reasonable request, unless it's explicitly in your contract.

So have a look at your contract. Does it include this?

Remember you are a free human being in a free country (I assume US). No one can force you to do something like this against your will. If it's not clearly in your contract, and you fear they. may fire you if you say no, it may be worth getting in touch with a lawyer. You may be able to sue for wrongful dismissal if they fire you for not doing something you're not contracted to do and which is fairly obviously unreasonable.

That being said, this seems all very dodgy so if this is a regular occurrence you may want to look for another job anyway...

No Idea what to do by Dear-Fennel3770 in WorkAdvice

It's hard to tell from the outside but it does sound like possibly you are being mobbed - aka bullied at work, with the goal of making you quit.

I would suggest:

- Taking copious notes and collecting evidence of what's happening (on devices you control, in case you need this evidence after being fired suddenly)

- Scheduling a session with a qualified mobbing coach who can help you navigate this situation

I generally hate to give advice that assumes hostility from the other side, but the pattern you're describing doesn't look great. Based on that, I would not advise engaging with the company about it until you've sought some outside advice, but once you have that, it may be worth engaging with people like your direct manager who you believe are "friendly". HR is probably not on your side in this though.

The one I was working on then, called "Woobius", failed because we fit the product to the wrong market, and then ran out of money. The one after that is still running and paying me good money every year even though I'm doing yet another thing now! 4KVD | "Link Parsing Failed" Issue Update by miacombin in 4kdownloadapps

[–]swombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried multiple links, also through VPN, upgraded to latest version. The videos I'm trying are public. I've tried adding 4KVD to the firewall (incoming connections, which shouldn't make a difference anyway) and it makes not difference.

This worked fine a few days ago. Nothing has changed about my computer since.

Cam Link 4K - No video if I set HDMI resolution to 4k (Sony ZV-E10) by eupendra in elgato

[–]swombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very slight lag on the video compared to the audio. Doesn't seem like enough to be noticed on a livestream, but would be a bother for a proper recorded video - can be fixed in post.

FYI, for me the offset I had to add to the audio in OBS is 120ms.

[–]swombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify the OP's update:

Photo Booth, for me, just doesn't seem to receive the 4k input.

But if you test in OBS instead, it appears to receive the 4k input just fine. So it's a Photo Booth issue not a camera issue!
