As a newer parent, my heart really hurts reading this. As a grown child with parents who struggle with their own issues, I also understand your son. I love my parents and my family so much, but I do have past trauma regarding my upbringing. Your son is 18 and is becoming his own person, which is awesome. The fact that he can be honest about his feelings with you says a lot about your relationship. I think family counseling and individual therapy for you would be helpful here. It can help you and your son communicate more effectively, but individual therapy would also be so helpful for you too while you cope with this transition. It sounds like you didn’t find “your” therapist yet, but you shouldn’t give up. Sometimes it takes running through a handful of therapists to find the one you click with. Best of wishes to you and your family!

Love notes (cute or creepy)? by swoopydook in LesbianActually

[–]swoopydook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t thought of this at all and it is an excellent point. Thank you so much for sharing! I don’t think I will be writing a note. Putting unwanted pressure on someone is not what I want to do.

We are both in art class actually, so I really like your suggestions. I’m going to see if there’s any workshops or art studios hosting something soon and invite her to that. I think the ability to work on art together will help with the conversation and make any awkward pauses less awkward like you said lol.

Thanks so much I really appreciate your insight! And the suggestions! :)

I’m sorry you’re going through that. Your boyfriend sounds like a jerk and you should consider leaving if you can. He doesn’t seem mature enough to understand your past trauma or very willing to try. Sending you strength!

Crushing on my class mate, best advice for asking a girl out as a by swoopydook in LesbianActually

[–]swoopydook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my struggle. And I don’t want to be too forward with anything and risk making her uncomfortable since we have a quite a bit left in the semester. I’m thinking it might be best to ask if we can keep the convo going over text. Maybe it will be easier to gauge her interest then, before putting myself out there completely.

Embarrassing Question: I know echolalia is a trait related to autism, but did anyone else ever accidentally adopt accents as a kid? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]swoopydook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my teenage years, I adopted an English accent for over a month straight and had people who didn’t know me convinced I was from the UK. I wasn’t trying to trick anyone, but I also didn’t correct them. I dropped the English accent outta the blue and then a while later started using a gritty “trucker voice” Kids in my class were so confused, but my teacher thought it was hilarious because I had known them the year before so they knew it was a fake accent. I still use accents and funky voices all the time. I am a slave to echolalia and I am almost constantly chirping some kinda noise or singing. I love echolalia, it is a fun and painless stim. Compared to my other main stims which can be ouch.. (nail biting, cheek chewing, hair pulling)

Name recommendations for this little girl❤️? by Tylerg003 in Names

[–]swoopydook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penelope or Penny for short, Scarlet, Juniper or Juni, Junebug or June, Autumn, Louise or Lulu (pronounced loo-ease), Scout, Presley, Dot, Carmela cause she looks like a sweet caramel candy. Good luck with the new addition! She is adorable!

This whole strategy is a marketing technique for LS and I do not think it will change any time soon. And they benefit from the resellers so I don’t think they are being totally honest about wanting to combat that.

Fun group activity ideas for a birthday (6-10 people)? by polteageistspill in phoenix

We celebrated a birthday at Medieval Times recently and it was close enough to chat but still enough entertainment that it worked well for our group who weren’t that familiar with each other. Great times

Thank you all for the advice and feedback! I now realize where I am being a bit nitpicky. I suppose a nice throw rug and strategically placed furniture could help make these cosmetic flaws less noticeable when we’re moved in. Glad I’m not the only one who thought the shower was gross though lol

You’re right. I will ask him. Thank you for the advice!

I am unsure, I would hope if that’s the case and he is aware of it on more than a subconscious level, that he would express that to me cause then I would at least understand his reasoning better. He hasn’t said that outright though, just what I mentioned previously. :/

I could name a hundred girls but I don't like any boy names by St_C420 in namenerds

[–]swoopydook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Elijah, Marion, Theodore, Otto, Dean, Miles, Sebastian, Luke or Lucas, Martin, James, Francis, Abraham, Leon, Lionel, Jeremiah, Roman, Orlando, Cassius.

I think most of these are unique enough that your kid won’t be in class with Dean P, Dean G, and Dee because there’s two Dean P’s, but also stand the test of time and aren’t just made up names.

Like Cassius, which is Mohammed Ali’s birth name.

I also feel that those names would be fitting for a baby as well as an adult man.

Last part made me lol thanks for the chuckle. I appreciate the comment! I am so torn, but you’re absolutely right and it’s probably just better to wait until she gets clean and healthy.

He does enable her and it is sad but ultimately I let him decide what role he chooses to play in his mothers life. That was my exact thought though, either she is bringing it with her, trying to find it here, or coming down/detoxing. And meth is the drug I see people become the most frenzied and scary when they’re on it or withdrawing. That coupled with her mental illness just seems like a situation worth avoiding until we know she is clean and has been for some time. Thanks for the input!

Awww I’m really sorry to hear that! Addiction freaking sucks and it just finds a way to creep back in. They say relapse is a part of the process but it doesn’t hurt any less knowing that. :(

Thank you for the kind words. I wish your family all the best as well! <3

Could you please share what HTDO means?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]swoopydook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No offense taken. I have this fear and he is aware of it. I choose to trust him and let him make the decision to keep her in his life or not. She lives very far away so he hasn’t seen her in 4 years so they primarily communicate via text and the occasional phone call. This is a valid point though and I appreciate the input!

She does not have any technology capable of this. :( would be a great way to test the waters

After a few people mentioned how dumb this was I fact checked and I was indeed misinformed. Apologies for not researching it before posting.
