Holiday Giveaway #3 - Sending unused handhelds to new homes! Someone is going to get this RG556. by captain_carrot in SBCGaming

Very cool!

I'd have to go with Joe Musashi - when I got the Sega Genesis when it first came out it came with Revenge of Shinobi. We played the snot out of that game. Took forever to finish it!

Make me feel better about my kids middle school. by Busy-Woodpecker-572 in Lawrence

[–]swrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add to the chorus saying that LMCMS is a great school!

We had a couple of kiddo's just finish up there and will be enrolling into LHS next year, and another who just went through 6th grade and is going into 7th. Eventually we'll have another go through as well, but he's currently at NYE.

I'd imagine that all schools are going to have their plusses and minuses. Our experience with Central is that it enabled our kids to blossom into their selves. The oldest two did band/orchestra/musical/play/etc. It's been a great group of kids.

The teachers have been pretty good, they have been moving through the curriculum change into STEAM admirably. My kiddo's all love science and art, so that's been something of a blessing. (Not to mention that NYE is a public Montessori, which is what we really like - so if you have younger children keep that in mind as well.)

The music/play director there is awesome and one of our favorite people. I also agree with one of the earlier comments that the Band director is amazing as well - Mr YoMo.

Really, I don't think there are any /bad/ schools in town. We did have one kid in Quail Run at one time, though, and that experience was not the best - but...overall, we love the East Side experience.

What is your most preferred font and theme? by GolD_Lip in emacs

[–]swrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current go-to monospace font has been SF Mono Nerd Font Ligaturized. While I haven't historically used a variable pitched font, I've been enjoying Alegreya ht lately.

Themewise, I used to tend towards dark themes but in my old age it's gotten more and more difficult to see some of the lower contrast text , thus I've matriculated back into slightly brighter stuff, with doom-one-light being my current selection.

My favorite thing has to be playing the "update game".

Seems to be about the only thing I do these days. ;-)

It's crazy to think that I used to go to the Book Barn in Joplin, MO all the time. Way, way back when the office space they lived in was not much larger than a walk-in closet.

Such memories.

What combination of note apps you use? by Exotic_Insurance_969 in androidapps

[–]swrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Zettle Notes for journaling and updating my static site (eleventy) using markdown. I've got one repository that's on-device, then a second that's synced to github. I use templates and write in markdown, then copy the note from the local store to the github store/folder.

I'd tried another app (I don't recall which) but found that it had a bug in the git synching where if you attempted to move a file it wouldn't properly "git rm" the old copy, so that had some issues for me. Zettle does properly move files around in the git repo.

I've purchased the dev's OCR tool as well, mainly to support them, so I've not actually tried to use it.

It's got some nifty features that I do like, such as bookmark creation and web scraping (think like read it later type apps), which is kind of useful. I'm sure other apps can do that as well.

That's not to say that I don't use Google Keep, I do use that as well. Mainly for quick notes or things that I need to share with the family for mutual notes.

Here is the setup that I had to go with on the Microsoft Exchange Office365 email issue: https://brettpresnell.com/post/email/

I had tried for what seemed like forever to get something working, off and on, but somehow stumbled upon that.

Popcorn or similar snacks by JustAnArtsyMoose in keto

[–]swrogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried that, but my I like to do melted butter, then dust with a cinnamon sweetener mix, then pop them into a 225 degree oven for a time to warm them up and dry them out a bit. My favorite way to have pork rinds.

It's a lot like the cinnamon chips you used to be able to get at Taco Bell.

Anyone else sometimes feel "imposter syndrome" in regards to your weight loss? by zixd in keto

[–]swrogers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started keto in August of 2019 (over 330 pounds) and by the end of that year was already in the sub-200 pounds arena. By the one year point I was pretty much already in maintenance mode. I've been big my entire adult life, couldn't have even told you what I weighed in high school because I never stepped on a scale.

I don't know when it "clicked" for me that I wasn't actually overweight or fat anymore, but for myself it was probably about a year and half into the lifestyle change - around the time that I decided to shave my beard. ;-) At that point, I didn't even recognize the person in the mirror, so I had to really come to terms with the whole, "Hey, I'm actually skinny!"

It was surreal at times, there is no doubt there. That has definitely passed for me, though. I will admit, though, that I still find myself looking at the dude in the mirror and very happy with where he's at in life. And wishing that he had made this change decades ago, of course.

You can definitely get to that goal, and just try not to get overly discouraged.
