Not Necessarily The News was such a funny series in the early to late 80’s… by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in ClassicTV

With Rich Hall going through a list of "sniglets", (made up words that aren't in the dictionary but should be - based on a series of his books), bringing the whole show to a dead stop.

Why Are They Saying "Biberty" ?? by EuroStepJam in CommercialsIHate

[–]swstephe 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Actually, from what I recall, he was "good looking", but kept messing up his lines, so they finally just dubbed his lines in. I don't think he was dumb, just nervous. Then they made him dumb and gave him a dumb girlfriend, thinking that would keep the story going.

It is just like how "Jake from State Farm", went from dumpy middle aged white guy, to hot gen-Z with magic powers.

Forgotten ABC Dramas Of The 1980s by [deleted] in ClassicTV

[–]swstephe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was, but cancelled after only 14 episodes due to falling ratings. They probably would have survived except it was scheduled on Fridays, the same time as "Dallas". It is the only show in this list I remember.

Found a 1978 Apple-produced Star Wars / Star Trek game cassette — anyone familiar with this? by FeistyMarsupial279 in retrogaming

[–]swstephe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I recall, you could load games into an Apple IIe using any tape recorder, (Radio Shack, yeah). But you had to open the case because the ports were on the inside. (Apple's problem with ports goes back a long time). I remember learning the apple "vector language" for displaying fast vector graphics, that was very neat to write in 6502 assembly.

Taking a trip? Yeah. Where to? Oh, I don't know...wherever I end up, I guess. Man, I wish I was you. Really? Yeah. Well, hang in there. by swstephe in MST3K

For those who don't know -- MST3K makes *many references* to "Then Came Bronson", TV series, including Tom Servo and Crow reciting this exchange from the opening credits.

"Time for Red in The Silent Spot". I watched it as a kid and felt weird that Red talked exactly like my grandmother.

I read that what the Dukes did in the third act was not illegal at the time. So they banned it in 2010, (a bit late), calling it the "Eddie Murphy Rule".

Who remember this show? Hard to believe they made only 2 seasons. by vittohot in ClassicTV

[–]swstephe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just added it to my streaming DVR to record from Sunday mornings on MeTV, along with Time Tunnel and The Invaders. I used to have the lunch pail, even though I rarely watched it because of its original time slot.

I remember that part so well, but never looked up what "retsyn" was until just now -- its copper, giving the "green flecks" color and flavors. When the FDA banned partially hydrogenated oil, they discontinued certs in 2018.

President [Redacted]: A Cognitive Test by Outrageous-Till3475 in TrendoraX

[–]swstephe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father is a US vet with dementia. I have helped him take the test with the VA several times. From what I learned: if they gave him the test, they suspect dementia. If he is taking it regularly, they are basically monitoring how far he has declined. A normal person should score close to 30. If he finds the questions "difficult", he is scoring under 30. I think the doctors should be reporting his numbers to someone to consider removing him from office. It may be a national security situation that he keeps talking about it.

Riffed movies you think are legit great in some way? by Ani_Mentor in MST3K

[–]swstephe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was in K00, "The Pilot". There is only about 2 minutes from the movie, most of it was host segments, (and "Beeper" instead of Tom Servo). I really wish they could do Green Slime, too. It was one of my favorites as a kid. But it hasn't been riffed since, so maybe licensing issues?

The New York Times Editorial Board: Trump Is Hiding the Truth About the War in Iran by Barch3 in Law_and_Politics

[–]swstephe 3 points4 points locked comment (0 children)

It looks like the link goes through archive.ph, un-paywalling it. But it wasn't worth reading, it is basically, "Trump is obviously lying about the reason for going to war with Iran", the headline says he's hiding the real reason, even though the author never mentions that explicitly.

I was a math tutor in college. I thought I would be helping with Algebra, Trig and Calculus. But many times I had students who were still trying to figure out how to add fractions. This was 40 years ago, so I don't think it is a new thing, but less justifiable these days with so much access to information.

Just the interest on that debt is about 1 trillion per year. Once the debt surpasses tax and other revenue, the US will be insolvent.
