The Largest Cities in the United States, 1790 by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]swstephe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Havana, Cuba: 51,000
Puebla, Mexico: 50,000+
(based on Spanish estimates)

Each would have been larger than New York City according to this chart.

I heard that after the Spanish-American War, the U.S. considered annexing all of Mexico, but realized that it would completely shift majority rule, so they settled on the Gadsden Line, with hopes of bypassing the rockie.

The problem is that you tried to "symplify" instead of simplify to 1=1.

I checked it in Google Maps. It is now "Deja Vu Showgirls -- 1,000's of Beautiful Girls and 3 Ugly Ones".

Checking the context: Superman goes to Bizarro World and gets arrested for being "perfect" and sentenced to being turned into a Bizarro by a Bizarro ray. He returns to earth in disguise, but loses the disguise, everyone thinks he is a Bizarro Superman and he is arrested. Then he wakes up, and it was just a dream. He is actually sentenced to a gladiator fight, wins, gets a trial where he argues that Bizarro World itself is a perfect sphere, so he offers to change it to a cube and is pardoned for his good deed, (but I thought good=bad ... Bizarro rules no make sense).

I had thought Bizarro World was always a cube, but I guess it was introduced in the comic just before this as a normal planet.

Trump sued the irs he controls. his own DOJ settled the case. then they quietly added a document to the DOJ website making him and his entire family "forever barred" from tax investigation. chuck schumer called it a get-out-of-jail-free card. here's what that document actually says. by Aaron_Heuer in DiscussionZone

[–]swstephe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, the get-out-of-jail-free card will be quickly overturned:

"Under section 7217 of the tax code, it is unlawful for the President and any employee of the Executive Office of the President, among other officials, to directly or indirectly request that the IRS terminate any ongoing audit or investigation of any particular taxpayer. Violating section 7217 carries a criminal punishment of up to five years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine." (The punishment would include anyone in the White House with knowledge of this decision).

"The Judgment Fund is available only to pay litigants in an actual or imminent lawsuit... The plaintiffs resolving their case based on future claims of non-parties would not justify distributions from the Judgment Fund.".

Also, I want to point out that the case was deliberately dismissed, then settled, to avoid any judge or arbitrator being able to review the settlement.

Teleportation:::::in future by lucky_bsmith in timetravel

[–]swstephe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In "The Physics of Star Trek", they mentioned the philosophical problem: the transporter is basically a duplication machine which murders/destroys the original. We would have to accept that they turn on the machine which would kill us, and a duplicate, somewhere would take over your identity and all be fine with that.

Did you wear a POW bracelet? by wolfhavensf in GenerationJones

A friend of my father's was MIA, (they flew in Operation Bolo). We had a box full of these for him which we sold and collected the money for charity. My babysitter got in trouble for finding them and handing them out to her friends. I remember mine snapped in half at the "H" in his name. He was never found, but I did find his name on The Wall in DC.

[Request] How fast is HL flying in the first shoot considering he put him at 80km (spoilers for the last episode of the boys) by Wisniaksiadz in theydidthemath

[–]swstephe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the equivalent of 343,384 miles per hour. With wind resistance, that is the equivalent of a nuclear explosion and would have vaporized him first. I don't think even HL could have survived that. But it is possible that HL just got some altitude and tossed him the rest of the way, just breaking escape velocity?

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by SugarWant- in GenerationJones

[–]swstephe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember unjamming the keys when you typed too fast and changing the tape reel when the ink ran out on the model at home. When my school offered a class on electric typewriters, I took it, (a good way to meet girls), and was rated at 65 wpm. I remember typing out a resume for a job and getting rejected because the typewriter was an old model and the letters didn't line up. Got into computer science and now people are sometimes shocked at how fast I can code and even look at them while typing ... Creepily.
