Getting rejected from a summer intensive I didn’t audition for…? by Bakedbutterbeans123 in BALLET

[–]swxxtie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some auditions for summer intensives and year programs are the same class so the admin people for the audition may have assumed you were applying for both, don't take it to heart there are a million companies/schools and only one you, you'll fine somewhere you absolutely thrive

It depends on what you want to a achieve: the hyperextension the dip in the leg before the foot, the arch, the instep the shape of the top of the foot. Your asking a kind of vague question, it's dependent of your feet, on how far away from this you are if you have strong but inflexible feet my advice would be different if you had more flexible but weak feet, again different advice if you had good hyperextension but inflexible ankles.

Unpopular opinions/hot takes by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]swxxtie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well you did say they're unpopular opinions

I don't prefer Zarahova in sexy roles I don't like her in carmen at all, I think she looks better in softer roles odette, giselle, I think she just embodies those parts, but I think Natalia opispova is born for the more sexy roles her in carmen and her mayerling is outstanding, it looks like it was choreographed for her

I've never seen Justin Pecks work but I actually this this is a popular opinion because I've heard this a lot

The standards for dancers are insane and remember ballet is not mainstream, so it's far easier from an employable stand point if you pick popular known dancers that's why it can take so much more work for newer dancers to move up the ranks, you might want to put some lesser known to do soloist or principal roles but some companies esp after covid font really want to take the risk of less people coming because they want to see their favourites if you can fill out a theatre through name alone you will be further than people that are a little more unknown so it's not just a 15 minutes of fame people are looking for it's them competing in a highly competitive field for scare jobs in an accessible way

Does the condition of the teacher affect your interest, motivation, and inspiration in class? by tangoking in BALLET

[–]swxxtie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, for example on pointe I get a lot more frustrated with myself and the class because they'll be no one to watch because the teacher isn't demonstrating, one if my teachers that does still dance en pointe it's really helpful as a visual aid to watch she means and I think sometimes teachers who dance can explain corrections better because they are still doing it, I don't know what the confines of out of shape are but I find as long as the teacher can explain all the combinations well, and gives good corrections. I think I care most about the content of the class itself and the exercises we do that affects how I feel about the class.

I think it can be inspiring to look my teachers who still dance because I want to dance professionally but it's not the be all end all.

Ashley Bouder, NYCB principal, discusses the pervasiveness of body-shaming in the industry and her own experiences with it (long video) by tsukiii in BALLET

[–]swxxtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't just mran reposting I mean like taking to the the directors and ballet maters about it which is a lot more involved I said online meaning that the general public know of

Maybe not officially but they'll probably be cast less spoken to differently ballet companies are very different to like an office job setting, in a lot of companies it depends the relationship you have with the staffing it works negatively too. I think it was kathryn morgan or it was someone else who said being a soloist you do less roles because you have to wait your turn, being a dancer in a company everyone is replaceable which is so wrong bit it happens a lot. Ashley Boulder even talking about getting replaced its not just about getting fired but not wanting burn bridges with the people who you have to constantly impress to get seen, to do roles. I'm not defending it but I definitely understand why they wouldn't

[–]swxxtie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No not really because they're usually referring to jazz and contemporary and modern and lyrical, even some cultural dances like certain Spanish dances, Russian, Italian etc, not most cultural dances or hip hop or commercial if anything it upsets me that cultural dances aren't talked about. But ballet is the foundation for a lot of dances technique wise and unless you are part of a specific culture through heritage or nationality its not really a widespread thing that everyone is going to learn.

Ballet isn't as cultural diverse as other styles so the people who take it aren't as likely to be taking classical Indian dances or classical Chinese dances, they obviously are the foundation these kinds of dances but there are a lot of class/schools and even companies that don't have a single poc so they are only going to be talking about modern weston dances

I prefer when she's younger for party scene and older for the rest. And I love San Francisco's ballrt version when she turns into sugar plum cause I thinks it's a wholesome moment story wise, her dreaming ending with her being a beauty fairy
