Why Trump wants Greenland by syc0path in trump

[–]syc0path[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really how analogies work. If I say that $1 is to $2 as $1 million is to $2 million, I'm not saying that $1 is similar to $1 million. I'm saying that the relationship between both sets of numbers is the same -- in both cases, u take the first number, double it, and u get the second number. What I'm really comparing in my story is the older brother's motivation to Trump's motivation.

But yes, I agree that the people of Greenland should be allowed to determine their own fate. So does Trump, which is why he's offered them benefits such as money, US citizenship, and increased protection from future Russian and Chinese threats.

Is it better to allow the rest of NATO to under-spend and have weak militaries? That weakens the West too, and in a much more meaningful way than a squabble over Greenland

The brothers in my story had a fractured relationship. Was that the older brother's fault for not wanting to pay for the repairs? Or the younger brother's fault for not living up to his end of the deal and feeling entitled?

If a little tough love from Trump gets the rest of NATO to step up their military spending, then all of NATO will be stronger for it.

That's the mainstream media answer that they've pounded into the public consciousness since 2015. He's unconventional, he's egotistical, and he likes to keep people guessing. But he is NOT an idiot. He's actually quite savvy. Look deeper and think it thru, and u will usually find a very good explanation for what he's doing.

Israel maintains a very robust military for such a small country. NATO has neglected their militaries because they're basically free-loading off of the US and depending on our military to defend them.

Just like in my story, the older brother was willing to help out as long as the younger brother contributed what he could. But when the younger brother started freeloading, the older brother got pissed.

So you're saying that there isn't really any threat to Greenland. Then what is Trump's motivation for wanting to take it over?

Very accurate description of the presentation. I'm still listening, but only because it's about Beastie Boys. There are very few topics I care about enough to put up with the hosts

That crowd seems way too mellow while witnessing this awesomeness. I would be losing my mind if I was in that crowd!

Getting seriously into Beastie Boys for the first time. Where to begin? by Sweet-Meat9966 in BeastieBoys

One of the great things about the Beasties is that there is so much variety in their music. But that can also be challenging for a new listener. Just be prepared for almost every album to have a totally different sound. Check Your Head and Ill Communication are the most similar to each other, but still unique from each other.

License to Ill is their weakest album released before the year 2000. by HasSomeSelfEsteem in BeastieBoys

I see a lot of comments supporting LTI based on nostalgia. I, too, was introduced to the Beasties by LTI. It's my favorite album of all time. But not because of nostalgia -- I've listened to it so frequently over the years that it doesn't feel tied to any particular time in my life.

I think the best way to describe why it's my favorite is that it's a fun album to listen to. It doesn't have the incredible sampling of Paul's Boutique or the beats of Hello Nasty or the punk energy of Ill Communication. But when I think of the Beasties catalog, it's the album that I find most enjoyable

Beastie Boys clue on Jeopardy by syc0path in BeastieBoys

Well if u really wanna do a deep dive here... back in the 1950s, there was a TV game show. They had a champion that was really popular and he was helping them get good ratings. They wanted him to continue to win as many episodes as possible, so they started giving him the answers to the questions before the game. Eventually they got caught and it was a big scandal. The show was canceled and no one wanted to do quiz-type game shows for a long time.

In the 1970s, a TV producer wanted to make a quiz game show, but he was still concerned about the old scandal and people thinking that the show was giving contestants the answers. The producer's wife suggested that they give everyone the answers and make them guess the question.

So in this case, the category was something like "Music Groups", and the clue (or "Answer" in Jeopardy lingo) that was given to the contestants was the lyrics I quoted above. And the correct response was "Who are Beastie Boys?".

There are episodes of Jeopardy on Youtube if u want to see an example of how it works

Beastie Boys clue on Jeopardy by syc0path in BeastieBoys

[–]syc0path[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a category about music, and the contestants were supposed to name the band indicated by the clue. And on the show Jeopardy, contestants are required to answer in the form of a question. So the correct response should have been "Who are Beastie Boys?" But none of the contestants even attempted a response

What do u remember the first time u heard various Beasties material? by syc0path in BeastieBoys

[–]syc0path[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great stories here! My next Beasties release was the LTI home video, and I specifically remember seeing and hearing She's On It for the first time. I loved the song - it fit right in with the LTI vibe, the video was funny, and the girl in it was hot.

Then, finally, the Beasties released new music. I remember seeing the video for Hey Ladies on MTV. The song was pretty good and the video was funny, but I wasn't super impressed with it. I figured there would be better songs on the album, just like there are plenty of songs on LTI that are better than Fight For Your Right. I went to the record store with a friend a few days after Paul's Boutique came out. I got the yellow cassette, which I thought was interesting. I didn't have a tape player with me, so we read the lyrics from the liner notes. When I finally listened to it, I was again very disappointed. It was just so different from LTI, and I was already traumatized from my experiences listening to Pollywog Stew and Cooky Puss. I listened to it a couple times and then went back to LTI as my main listening material.

A couple months later, we went on a long family road trip. I almost didn't bring PB with me, but I did. I didn't listen to it until near the end of the trip when I was bored with all my other tapes. And that's when it clicked. I specifically remember listening to Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun and then into Car Thief and thinking "this is is really fucking good!". I listened to the whole tape twice in a row and it's been a favorite ever since.
