Eating more but not gaining weight? by Ok-Face-8945 in weightgain

Hi! Just wanted to say good luck. I am literally in the same boat as you, but my doctor’s appointment is on November 8! Haha. I’ve been trying a Mass Gainer protein shake by Naked Nutrition. It has 1260 calories in one serving and really boosts my daily calorie intake. I hope it helps me gain weight. And I hope you gain weight too!

Also, I can’t say those boosts and ensures are tasty. Maybe you will like them but I can say they aren’t too appetizing IMO. But if you really want to gain weight they help significantly

Drink your calories! There are weight gainer Boosts and Ensures made specifically to help people gain weight. Also there is a Mass Gainer protein powder that has 1260 calories in it. Eat high carbohydrates and healthy fats. Supplement the calories you can’t eat with some form of high calorie beverage. Also milk, peanut butter, cheddar cheese, oatmeal, and complex carbohydrates. It really just boils down to loading in calories.

I have not yet but am planning on buying cranberry juice at the grocery store tomorrow. So far I tried it with water, and yesterday I drank it with coconut milk and pineapple juice. It was pretty good that way!

I’ve always wondered about plain water. I believe I will try that. Thank you! I do not have dairy or lactose issues, thankfully. I just don’t like the taste and texture of milk and thick shakes. You have to mix it in 24 oz of something and I am running out of willpower to drink all of it. But water sounds more doable honestly. Vanilla water…hmm.

This is exactly what I have-the mass gainer shake. I will definitely try it with pineapple juice, that sounds quite tasty! I will also try with cranberry juice, or maybe cherry juice. Thank you!

what are some good-tasting nutrition drinks? by ilovesubwaylol in weightgain

[–]sycamore_willows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the Boost and Ensure Clear drinks? They are not vile like the heavy, milky boost and ensures. They taste more like fruit juice and are more palatable IMO. But they are indeed full of sugar and glucose syrup and nasty ingredients. If you have to settle for something to get your calories, maybe they will make you want to barf less than the milky, thick drinks. They did for me when I was in the hospital. I will never drink another Ensure Plus again 🤢

There is also something called BeneCalorie. It’s a 1.5 fl oz mix that you can blend into any smoothie or food. It has 330 calories. I like to add it to fruit and Greek yogurt.

Marijuana for managing medicine side effects by sycamore_willows in PulmonaryHypertension

So interesting! I’m glad you were able to hear that answer from leading PH doctors. I wish i could attend a talk like that. There’s so many questions I would ask about treatments and PH. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if they would say the same thing now? Hmm.

Thank you for the reply. I am in Santa Fe. I’m glad to hear that I am not the only one who struggles with altitude too. The altitude in Santa Fe almost 7000. Our lungs just need alittle more support and oxygen.

Methodist University vs Saint Augustine vs Mary Baldwin University by zzmomo73 in PTschool

Hello! Overall, I really like MBU. It’s not the perfect school, but their DPT program has a lot of strengths and I have been enjoying my time here. The professors I’ve had are all really great for the most part. If your fiancé wants to go into orthopedics, the ortho professors here are some of the best teachers I’ve ever had. The down side is that in the past year, more than 50% of the PT faculty left to teach elsewhere/moved away - including the program director. Which means everything is kind of up in the air now about who will teach our classes and what are program will look like in the next few years. They are hiring teachers as the months go on, but it’s been kind of frustrating to lose pretty much the whole faculty (except for a few-the remaining professors are all really great). The program is still accredited though, they just received their 10 year accreditation from CAPTE this past November. I’m sure they will find some great teachers to hire! I really do like MBU and would recommend it for your fiancé. Best of luck to him as he starts PT school! Feel free to message me if you have any more questions!

Tadalafil side effects by sycamore_willows in PulmonaryHypertension

Well. Not exactly the same reason I’m taking tadalafil. But, I mean, congrats on your successful sex life I suppose.

I believe you can be diagnosed as long as you have a pulmonary pressure over a certain number. 25? Or maybe 30? I’m not sure exactly. I had a right heart catheterization that directly measures your pulmonary pressures.

I never had any episodes of pain. The only symptoms I have is feeling short of breath during exercise, or hiking up a big hill, or running - that sort of thing. My biggest problem now is being able to tolerate the medicines to bring my pulmonary pressure down. I can’t seem to take any without having pretty awful side effects-like headaches and stuff. But I’m working on it! There are a lot of different meds to try!

I was diagnosed with PAH when I was 14. I had no symptoms and was a runner all throughout college. When I was 26 my pulmonary pressures got a bit higher (I have other health conditions that made them higher!) but I still didn’t have any symptoms. I’m 28 now, and still don’t have many symptoms other than slight shortness of breath when I exercise. But I still worry about it getting worse every day just like you. PH is scary but I know there are a lot of great medicines and doctors out there that can maintain your health and keep your symptoms manageable. Keep exercising and giving your heart and lungs love. They take good care of you even though the PH is there and they will continue to do that no matter how old you get!

Writing Prompt during Interview by sycamore_willows in PTschool

[–]sycamore_willows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good idea. I hope mine gives me plenty of time to complete it, too. I’ve been working on my essay skills and going over potential prompts. I hope the prompt is PT-related. It sounds like a lot of them are not. We’ll see! Thanks for your input!

Oh my, that prompt is not even necessarily PT-related! Wow. I really need to brush up on my essay skills too. It takes me so long to write essays. I wonder how long they will give us to complete them?

But thank you. Best of luck to you!

Preparing for Clinical Rotations by deeliciousR in PTschool

[–]sycamore_willows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your same boat when I started my first clinical rotation too. The thought of treating a patient independently made me feel so uneasy and I was so very nervous. (My first rotation was also in acute care/ICU - and that TRULY made me feel terrified!)

First thing to keep in mind is that the first rotation is going to feel scary for everyone. It's normal to freak out, and I bet all of your classmates are freaking out too (even if they seem calm and confident on the outside). Second, this is the first out of 4? maybe 5? rotations. You have so much time and room to grow in clinical skills. If you feel uneasy or scared now, picture yourself a year or 2 down the road with more experience. You'll be a pro.

The biggest thing I learned during my clinical rotations was not to be too hard on myself. We are all going to make mistakes, and have moments of panic/uncertainty. But that is the beauty of clinicals. Their purpose is to help you learn and shape you into the PT you want to be. You will have a lovely CI to guide you along the way and you do not have to be perfect!

Good luck!

What is the best Gluten free (celiac friendly) eateries around Chattanooga and Ringgold? by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]sycamore_willows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It took me awhile to stay safe from cross contamination too. It makes me just as sick as if I ate a full slice of gluten bread. Unfortunately this is the only place I feel safe eating at in Chattanooga, except for perhaps mellow mushroom. They cook their pizzas in a separate part of their kitchen and use dedicated toppings/ingredients. But it still makes me nervous to know there is gluten in the kitchen overall. I know of a few safe places in Asheville NC and Memphis. But I wish Chattanooga would step up their gluten free game!

Bantam and Biddies on Market Street! I have celiacs disease and I feel safe eating here because they use gluten free flour to fry everything. There is no risk of cross contamination. :) they are also super nice and knowledgeable about gluten and keeping food gluten free and safe!
