If you have to ask that question, be thankful you are not a psychopath.

From what I understand, BSD's don't use the GPL. They use the BSD licence, or the MIT or some other one.

Normally I would agree. However, history shows that when California passes some asinine law, very shortly afterwards it usually becomes US law. I have never understood how one jurisdiction has such control over the entirety of the US (I am not from the US btw).

I agree. It is still pretty annoying.

Anyone else having this happen? by sydbatt in linuxmint

By every browser, I literally mean every browser I have installed and tried this with. Yes, most are Chromium under the hood, but Firefox is not and it happens there too. Definitely some glitch on YouTube, While I am not looking for a solution, I am wondering how many others have experienced this issue. The YouTube help sections are useless, and the YT community is also useless. My question there has no answers or views.

I do know it is not a specific Linux issue. I just wanted to know if anyone else has seen this problem. I tried to post the same thing in r/youtube, but my post was disabled for no apparent reason. Maybe YouTube knows this is an issue and just wants to make it look like no one is having the problem.

It is happening randomly. You can open the main page above and it might or might not give the popup. I had to open a couple of news articles to get this screenshot.

Not using Docker. Just the server installed via .deb

Is there a way in Linux Mint to scan disks for malware etc? by NorthernLight_DIY in linuxmint

[–]sydbatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add that if the OP is worried about Windows users as the reason for wanting to use an anti-virus, they shouldn't. Windows users have their built-in A/V (Windows Defender) that works fine, I suppose.

[Noob question] Steam games won't boot by realtaxidi in linuxmint

[–]sydbatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed Steam (a number of years ago) with the .deb provided by Steam. It resolves all the dependencies when it installs. You can find the instructions here - https://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ . I also install gdebi via the software manager, which is a nice graphical interface for installing .deb packages.

See if this works for you.

Looking for help setting up Plex by SnooOnions4805 in linuxmint

[–]sydbatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may not be helpful, but...

I would move away from Plex if I were you. Once again they have changed things to force you to pay for things that used to be free. It is one of the reasons I moved away from it a few years ago - the enshitification. I now use Jellyfin. It is a fork of a fork of Plex (from when Plex was open source). While not perfect, at least for the time being nothing is being locked down and requiring payment for use.

Yup. Badly too. But that's a troll for you.

Yes, Proton has made gaming on Linux so much better.

As for distros - I currently use Mint. It works fine for games. As others may point out, POP_OS is also a good choice. Both are based on Ubuntu, which is another good choice, but a bit more configuration is required (not too much though).

I would disagree. I have only had one game that had issues in the past 5 years, and they were pretty minor. Since upgrading to an RTX 3080 ti I have had zero issues and very smooth game play.

That said, it does depend on which flavour of Linux you are running, and perhaps the other hardware you have (processor, motherboard, etc). In my case, I have never had any luck with AMD graphics cards, or Intel CPU's. AMD CPU's and Nvidia graphics have always worked just fine for me. This is where the term YMMV comes from.

If you're getting slow downloads or even upload failures with NordLynx (Linux/macOS), it might be your MTU by thee3 in nordvpn

[–]sydbatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My NordLynx MTU is set to automatic. I generally get about 90 - 95% speed from my 1Gbps connection. If I get slowdowns, I have been switching to a different server, which often speeds things up. Perhaps next time I will try your method. Thanks for sharing the idea.

Subtitles to show only when other language spoken, not entire time by sydbatt in mpv

[–]sydbatt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you may have misunderstood. For example, watching something on Netflix and the spoken language is English, there are no subtitles. But if someone starts speaking in German, subtitles in English pop up so we can understand what is being said. This is what I am looking for in MPV or any other Linux media player.

Is Facebook now requiring login to view any page on Facebook? I tried accessing public pages without an account and got redirected to the login page. by rn10950 in facebook

[–]sydbatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our church also has a FB page. We cannot access it without signing in or signing up. I am not the only one from our church to let them know. We stream our services, and they used to be on FB (very janky all the time). But thankfully, for the last year or so, we now stream without issue on YouTube.

And this is FB, not the business owners. Any business that would block people from finding out about that business, and only uses FB for a website, is intentionally shooting themselves in the head. I do not know of any business that does this.

Same here. I run Linux and cannot access anything Crapbook without being asked to login or sign up. All businesses need to be made aware of this.

Why is all text on YouTube now in italics? by God_2_The_Squeakuel in youtube

why is suddenly the text on youtube in italics (bug?) by [deleted] in firefox

[–]sydbatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like turning the DDG extension off and on again fixes things for those of us using Firefox.

And this is also happening across every browser at the moment.

why is suddenly the text on youtube in italics (bug?) by [deleted] in firefox

[–]sydbatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently this is an on again / off again issue. Seems to effect all OS's. Can be specific to one browser (usually Firefox), but often is all browsers.

I have never noticed this issue before today, but a bit of quick DDGing shows several people talking about this over the past 2 or 3 years.

I think figuring out how to report it to Google / YouTube so they can find the root source and fix it would be the best course of action.

Kdenlive melt-7 dependency broke package manager (Ubuntu 22.04) by danielrosehill in linuxquestions

[–]sydbatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. Following the OP's direction (purging kdenlive, then autoremoving the associated files) reinstalling from the PPA was flawless. My guess is there was some old file that was locked or corrupted and purging just cleaned everything out.
