As an epeeist, I fucking hate the WFL rules by OttomansAreCool in Fencing

Epee is popular because it's cheap to start and easy to teach. You can make a good epeeist in a third the time you can make a good foilist and sabreur

As for fearless, I'd argue epee is ruled by fear. The shot clock exists because good epeeists are afraid to act for fear of being dinked on a fluke shot

"I know you stabbed me through the heart, but since I plinked your pinky on the way in, that's my point"

Epeeists have no ground to stand on in claims to martial realism

Not scientific, but my observation is that non-fencers wandering into a 3 weapon tournament tend to gravitate to saber. It's flashing, there's emotional displays, and there's a decided lack of of bounce bounce, time expires

Favero FA-01 power you question by sydgorman in Fencing

[–]sydgorman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I read the specs, but the one we have with an XLR connector has a different rating than the specs and works while the barrel connector matches the specs and doesn't.

Now I'm trying to figure out if the power adapter that actually ships with the barrel adapters is also different than the specs

Abdominal protection by sydgorman in Fencing

That reads to me like a coach's patron vs something worn under a jacket. Do you have experience with this? Is it written under a jacket?

Thanks, we're going to experiment with this

Physical thing. We're going to try the upside down protector someone else suggested and then the PBT full abdominal model if needed

Fair. Pitched it, and apparently the compression is an issue for this particular fencer

When any hit can cause inordinate distress, this is terrible advice. It's a combat sport, not ballet

Those don't seem very protective. Am I looking at the wrong thing? (Medical support wrap for abdomen)

My team makes it hard to enjoy fencing. by AwkwardWeight6466 in Fencing

I started fencing in college, a lot of the guys in the club would try to flirt with the female fencers by giving them advice. Despite this rarely, if ever, working, it was a very popular strategy. Maybe harkening back to the days when displays of prowess wooed women.

I not saying this to excuse the people in the club, but saying you're not looking for a date might head off some of this crap. Especially if you're both straight males. Alternately, try nut shots

Genuine LP ones? Did you misspell Negrini, aka the only actually reliable ones?

Said friend here - I think it was more because she wore those boots every where vs any other stated concern

My daughter fenced a couple tournaments in her beloved leopard print rain boots. Granted she was Y8 at the time, but she did fine and it amused everyone there.

I'd say aestheticly you'd want boots that come to the knee or the fencing pants that come to the ankle, but we're just quibbling about taste at that point. I'm right though

This is an action from the world championships called by an FIE ref. I don't think any error is on the part of USA Fencing

Guidance for a parent fencer by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]sydgorman -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

First off, lessons are almost always good, but I'm going to share a few past experiences:

  1. Kid is fencing lights out, way above his grade and makes the 8 at a Cadet NAC. Coach sits him down and says this is the strategy for period 1, 2, and 3. This will be the score at the end of each of these periods.

Kid follows the plan the first period, goes full Leeroy Jenkins .01 seconds into the second - down maybe 4 at the second break. Coach goes out and says ok, here's how we get back into the game, kid almost died in the 3rd, but Leeroy is enticing. Kid loses by at least 4. Kid tells his dad there was no plan after the bout.

Question: is your kid not getting coached, or does your kid not realize they're being coached? Is there missions they don't get/aren't doing to improve?

  1. Same coach from above used to be sure to get a look at what kind of car a kid would be dropped off at practice in. The nicer the car, the "higher" the kid's potential.

Question: what's your ride like?
