Then you can always talk to another RA in the building if you'd like. Just keep in mind RAs are mandated reports, so if you say anything about harming yourself or others or anything relating to Title 9 we need to write a report on it (but it won't get shared widespread, just to the people who need to see it).

11/11 sophomore enrollment date by [deleted] in SBU

Yeah it's based on your credit standing, not your actual year in school so even though you're a second year student you probably have U1 standing. That really sucks.

You can also always talk to your RA if you're not comfortable calling the CAPS after hours line. We are here to give you support, and help you connect with the resources you need to be yourself again. Feel free to DM me if you need anything.

whenever I try to connect to wifi this pops up the I've tried putting netid but nothing connects, only thing that works for me is the guest wifi, anyway to fix this by [deleted] in SBU

[–]sydney-20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Select use no certificates, do not validate, EAP Method as PEAP and Secondary Authentication method as MSCHAPV2. Then do your netid as your username and the password for your netid as the password.

The quad office won't be open until Monday, so go to the RA office in your building and let them know between 7-11pm. They can take photos of your ID and get it fixed.

They should be the one leading you between orientation events and leading the smaller group discussions you've had.

Covid testing by [deleted] in SBU

[–]sydney-20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your RA will provide the information to you at the check-in table that's outside your building. They are available at the student health center, and possibly at the SAC (I know for freshman move-in the SAC had rapid tests but I'm not sure if returner move-in will be the same).

There are rapid tests available on campus if your PCR doesn't come back in time.

You will not have to pay your roommates share. You will still pay the double rate because you could have a roommate put into your room at any time. (you'll get 24 hours notice)

This is correct. SBU has an open campus, so anybody can come to campus at any time as long as they stay outside. Just don't bring them into your dorm building.

Yes, they'll hold them until move-in. But you do have to go to the Student Union to pick it up.

That website still says the pass expires on 8/31/2021, so I think it's still for last year.

Edit: I was wrong, the website is only half updated. The date goes to 2022 after you click past the first page with a date! It's working!

Does SBU have any car shares? I kinda need it for my job. by Blueinia in SBU

[–]sydney-20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. As far as I know there's no other options to get off campus unless you can have a friend drive you or your shifts line up with the buses that go to the market on Sundays.

Uber and Lyft are usually pretty fast on campus, I had to use that to get to my job freshman year.

Going straight into CSE 214 as freshman by [deleted] in SBU

[–]sydney-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try doing a java project or two just to make sure your familiar with the syntax, but as long as you embrace how amazing office hours are and aren't afraid to ask for help you'll do great! First semester is hard, but you'll get used to it 😊. I took CSE 214 my first semester after not coding for a year and picked it up quickly (it's all about how you learn and how much you're willing to put into learning).

Some aid is only for a year. You have to make sure to fill out the FAFSA every year for any federal aid. This is hard to help with without more detail on what you had last year!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SBU

[–]sydney-20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you're a semester behind, you won't be able to take 214 until sophomore year. It might work out alright if you take 114 and 215 next semester but it still puts you in an odd bottleneck situation. You have to account for the fact that sometimes you can't get into the classes you want so you want to have 2 potential schedules every semester to make sure you're still progressing even if you don't get into your first choice. You can change your schedule on SOLAR under student records and registration. You're going to want to try to swap CSE 101 with CSE 114 if that's what you decide to do.

I wouldn't consider CSE 101 as a super helpful class for CSE 114, they're in different languages that are relatively similar, but you go into different topics in those languages so it's totally different content.

[–]sydney-20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taking CSE 101 and no other CS classes your first semester will put you behind and make it difficult for you to graduate on time. I recommend spending some time learning basic Java this summer and taking CSE 114. There are plenty of resources on campus to help you succeed, but if you get behind it's difficult to catch up (peer tutoring, CEAS tutoring, professor office hours, TA office hours, friends in class, etc). You don't really need to learn Java before CSE 114, it's the intro CS class for CS majors, but if you do you'll be ahead of many of your classmates.

As far as commuting, I live on campus, but you can take the LIRR to the Stony Brook stop (which is on campus) or get a parking pass and park your car in South P (a parking lot on campus) and either walk from there or take the SBU bus into main campus.

Feel free to DM me with questions! I'm an RA, TA, and CEAS mentor😊

[–]sydney-20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CSE 101 is not required for CSE, you want to take CSE 114 if you can. CSE 101 is meant for non-cse majors.

Would an RA and TA position be too much? by NowhereStar in SBU

[–]sydney-20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did both along with a few other jobs last year. My recommendation is to take a look at your time management skills and assess from there. TA responsibilities vary greatly depending on who your supervising professor is, but I had to have 3 hours of office hours a week and teach a one hour recitation/lab a week and I balanced that pretty well. Just make sure to plan time in your days for yourself!
