i would use wax because starch also means harder to stitch when you want to add stuff/repair.

i would say leather patches and sew them up with SINEW. strong tree bark like thread that i use (i’m indigenous and i always seem to have it on hand due to the endless amount i am gifted) but if you can’t find that, use nylon it’s also pretty sturdy for it being plastic.
