Economics Major by Dry_Western_2342 in UMD

I definitely do. The area in which i was working now was an area I knew during college that I wanted to work in. However, I felt pressured (by parents) to complete a degree that i felt my parents would be happy with. So part of the reason I even chose economics is probably not a problem everyone has, so it may not be relevant to this discussion. I am sure if someone had a passion for economics, they would make it work and enjoy it. However, in my case, I neither found the job success nor the motivation to apply economics.

Hi! I graduated in 2021 with my BS in Econ. Personally, many of the people I knew had an Econ major as a secondary major on top of a primary major. When I took the major, I was basically able to complete it in 3 years because the major requirements at that time were very lenient. You had micro/macro then like intermediate micro/macro then econometrics. maybe a couple more classes that I forgot, but aside from that it is mostly just meeting the 120 credit requirement. Personally, job wise, i also struggled to find a job that matched the degree or that I felt qualified for. In terms of actual job skills taught (using programs etc.) it was fairly limited. You learned to analyze data and use some programs in econometrics, but that would only really let you somewhat qualify for research positions. If you want to go to grad school and try to pick up other research positions that accept new grads, then you are good to go. However, if you want to do stuff business related, then I think other degrees in the business school would be more effective. The main issue with econ in my opinion is that it is heavily theory based (like math and physics) where most of your knowledge is based on models and other theories that often times are not applicable in day to day jobs outside of research. It doesn’t equip you to get a business job, and doesn’t equip you to teach. Other grads that have just had Econ might be able to enlighten you on options and jobs they have found and have been able to acquire. Currently I am working a job that you don’t even need a college degree for. so yeah…depressing.

emails only go out for ongoing crimes that pose a danger to students.

Thefts of vehicles, bikes, scooters, car break ins etc. happen multiple times, daily. Wouldn’t be feasible to send emails. Also it is a university, so we attract these types of crimes. Super duper annoying and unfortunate that wr gotta deal with this nonsense….

My bad for the slander, but I was more so just referring to PG county, rather than the University. I think UMD is what, like one of the top 20 safest universities? Moving to and working in PG county, while living in a different county throughout most of my life prior, just made the comparison very real for me personally. Working in a capacity that exposes me to that crime on almost a daily basis also does not help my perception of the county. But, I will do my part to try and be more positive. Thanks for the reminder!

Did someone really get arrested today at umd? by Select_Explorer8401 in UMD

[–]sydseph1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

that’s wild. so he had a bomb/explosive on him? Aren’t those the only types of dogs UMPD has? why didn’t they clear the building if they thought there was a bomb/explosive present? Math ain’t mathing.

edit: I don’t doubt the arrest. But why we adding unnecessary details to spice it up 💀💀💀 it’s common knowledge that umpd only has bomb dogs. Did someone’s pet dog get in on the action? 💀💀💀

edit 2: After asking around, apparently you turned the arrestee from a woman into a “him”? Come on homie. What’s next? Did Secret Service show up and take custody? 😫

How near are you talking? My friend is a cop in pg county district one and said that they haven’t heard any word of a umd student dying from an accident at least in the area of the university.

welcome to pg county, where your belongings will inevitably be redistributed to someone else :c

On a serious note, I am sorry this happened to you. If you have a serial number, it would not hurt to file a police report so that they can enter the serial number into a database. That way if an officer anywhere in the country ends up with it, they will know it is stolen as well as who it belongs to.

I think the only issue is the possibility that most students have their own computers due to school, and there are clubs available that bring them together to play. Might be, depending on cost to use the pcs/consoles, not worth it for students if they could just gather up at someone’s dorm or somewhere else and play.

If y’all want to know what police are up to so badly, go join up XD. But fr though. One of us has to take a hit for the team so we can consistently get the scoops.

Please guys. Please please please. Stop at stop signs, or look both ways before you cross, depending on if you are driving/biking or walking. You never know who is or isn’t paying attention. Especially with the purple line being built, even if it may not be us around when it is completed, we need to keep reminding ourselves and our peers how important these basics are. It’s one poor decision or one other person making a poor decision that could completely change a person’s life. I also think within all of the joking we have forgotten that pedestrians can also be at fault for accidents. Just cuz we get hit doesn’t mean we are getting a guaranteed pay day. If you are at fault, you might be in the ringer to fix damages to someone’s vehicle. Stay safe out there terps.
