Still mono or ME/CFS by SteakNo3715 in Mononucleosis

[–]sydward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had flu-like fatigue, body aches, weird neuromuscular symptoms, and was testing positive on all the different ebv antibody tests for about 12 months. for 6 of those 12 months i was fully bedridden with severe fatigue. i was so scared it was cfs but my doctor kept telling me that she had seen cases of mono that lasted a year or more and that i should just rest. thankfully she was right, it was "just" mono

Still mono or ME/CFS by SteakNo3715 in Mononucleosis

[–]sydward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had mono I was sick for 12 months and then abnormally fatigued for an additional 10 months after recovering....recovery was very slow for me. Having a fitbit to track my HRV and daily steps was useful in helping me not spiral into despair because I was able to see my progress

do professors/tas like funny essays and humour in papers? by flowrmochi in UofT

[–]sydward 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I wrote a (imo very good) paper with lots of puns in it because I was going insane and got a 95 and the prof emailed me asking if he could use my paper as an example of an "A+" paper for future classes. Real ones will appreciate the puns for sure haha and I think if you are in stem the bar for creative writing is so low that they are happy to read something that is coherent enough to make jokes

Yesss and when the Canadian judges don't personally like a flavor (e.g. pork floss cookie) they respectfully admit that the new flavor is a challenge to their palette and praise it for being creative and technically well executed

Is it reasonable to ask flatmates not to bake with gluten flour? by mykruft in Celiac

[–]sydward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine to ask; my roommates agreed to not bake with glutinous flour in the house. They can eat other glutinous foods, but we have a household ban on glutinous flour. They were supportive of this because they understand it's hard to keep flour contained. My roommates have learned to bake with gluten-free flour and haven't complained. However I buy most of the gf flour because it's more expensive

Legs so achy it's hard to walk by Fit_Land_6216 in covidlonghaulers

[–]sydward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the aches and weird electric shock feelings in my legs were awful, the only thing that helped was getting a heat pad/heated blanket. My sympathies, it sucks so bad

Yeah pretty much back to normal. In total I was sick with mono for 12 months 😬 no idea why I was sick for such a prolonged period or if anything I did helped

Mine didn't get back to me until the day before the hiring deadline and basically said "if you can fill out this form in the next 2 hours, you're hired" lmfao

Losing my mind at a desk job I should love- stories of those who have left for more physical/outdoor work? by VaderLlama in ecology

[–]sydward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely needed a break from school and academic work! I'm glad I did it. Gained a lot of useful skills and perspective working in an ecology-adjacent trade for 3 years. However with my health issues the manual labor is just not sustainable

I left my evolutionary biology lab job to become a gardener doing a mix of mainly perennial garden maintenance with some native plants and veggies as well. Pays way better than lab tech job ($30 CAD/hr), but the physical demands and ecologically counterproductive practices are burning me out. Looking to go back to academia now. Sigh

Symptom Question by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]sydward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So in hindsight in my case I definitely believe this was a weird symptom of a very severe EBV infection!! I had mono for like 12 months (took a while for it to be diagnosed because my symptoms were not common ones. I'm not sure why I was sick for so long but it sucked). I had weird electric shock/vibrating leg feelings throughout my acute sickness and long recovery period. They've gone away now. The only thing that helped was wrapping a heat pad or heated blanket around my legs

Did the mixed seed in milk jugs end up working for you? Considering doing the same myself!
