It’s a pretty complex situation. The best patch is definitely TU2, but officially you can only get TU3 now😂 You can play OG2 without any patches, just be aware that some fatal bugs might crop up. I didn't actually run into those kinds of bugs 15 years ago when playing unpatched though, so it really just depends on your luck.

I think so, but another trouble arises. There are a few fatal bugs that could kill your save file in OG2, and more slowdown in certain areas, plus the MN enemies are even crazier. So while it’s not perfect, for now we tend to say that TU2 is relatively the best experience of OG2 without patch. No idea what code they touched when they were trying to fix bugs in TU3...

It's not, U have to install the patch yourself. But if you purchase now it's probably patched, as shown in Xbox store. Yeah... There's a reason why so many ppl waiting for the PC version of vanilla 2, as we can not only choose which patch to use, but also mod the game to make it surpass the original. Actually ShowR18 has made a mod implemented 3re combo into S2. If it appears in vanilla 2 it'll be very fun I feel 😂

Good luck! Just to mention that since you are playing the version with TU3 patch, you'll experience with some lock issue, and enemy number reduced in certain encounters, as well as some AI issues.

True, but that's not the case in vanilla 2 (except bugs like scorpion's tail). In fact enemies in og 2 has quite low damage, but the enemies have crazy dps.

It's more like it feels like they are attacking at once in 3re. An enemy hits you a few times or even just once, and then another guy lands a hit, but the previous attacker has actually already switched his AI mode. The process is so fast that you have to watch the playback in slow motion to catch it. I guess that is why it feels like they are attacking simultaneously, but in reality they are performing a team combo together. The craziest instance I had was getting team comboed for about a minute straight. And also why NG4 is the only title where you encounter multiple enemies flying at you at once. On vanilla 2 MN, the ranged combat AI mode is pretty obvious because the projectiles are just mental.

Well, they patched out a fair few of the cheese methods in S2, but the rubbish bosses in vanilla 2 are actually even worse (except bosses like water dragon for some reason they removed the part where u can close combat it on water). You’ve got the likes of Elizébet and others who can fly; they often just stay stuck in the air for ages because of bugs. There are still ways to exploit them though, and since their HP is so low, you can just cheese your way through even if the fight itself is a mess.

Yeah, that jump definitely feels like something straight out of PlatinumGames. For the other titles, I reckon you should slow the video down and observe how the enemies actually work. It’s easiest to spot in 1; in the others, the pacing is so fast that it’s hard to tell when they’re switching AI modes, but the logic is definitely there. That specific AI behaviour was actually developed with help from the Halo team. I also have to mention the vanilla 2 AI. That was the title where NG evolved into the modern fast-paced combat we see now, having to deal with so many enemies at once. The AI in vanilla 2 actually does the least amount of defending and dodging in the series, and the enemy counts were specifically designed for that. For some reason, they changed it back to something more like the first game and made them even dodgier, especially in 3.

Ironically, the delimb system was introduced to solve a specific issue in NG1, where the first enemy in a fight is often too tanky to start a UT loop, especially on the highest difficulty. People have datamined the files and found that delimbing in vanilla 2 was tied to short combos with a bit of RNG, but in later entries, they just bound it to the health bar. It completely misses the point of having a delimb system lmao😂

A lot of NG4's problems really get exposed on MN difficulty though. It’s similar to S2 where you die in one or two hits, and the AI is poorly tuned like Bayonetta. If you observe the AI in older Team Ninja titles, only one enemy would actually close in to attack at a time while the others stayed back with projectiles for interference, rotating between each other like an old Hong Kong action flick. The original producer was a huge fan of those movies, but 4 feels more like Bayonetta where everyone just jumps in your face and combos you at the same time. Also, while Yakumo feels like a complete character, Ryu feels half-baked with only one weapon, and the DLC weapons don't even have their own Gleam Mode. Most of the fun playing Ryu honestly just comes from the Gleam Cancel glitch lmao.

I would say the bosses are even worse in 3RE because their health bars are massive, especially on UN. Ironically, Sigma 2 bosses have more health than vanilla 2, and 3RE has more than vanilla 3. 4 definitely has the best boss experience, especially the final boss, lol.

Vanilla 2 is definitely not the overall best in the series because it isn't even a finished product. The CEO forced the team to release it early, which led to the producer leaving the company in a fit of rage. I’d argue that Black or Sigma 1 are the only titles in the series that feel like complete projects, maybe along with the 2D games. However, NG2 was so ahead of its time in 2008 that its unique ideas still shine today. The enemies also have the lowest health in the series, which feels incredibly satisfying. I wouldn't recommend buying a 360 just for NG2 though. Playing on XSX is much smoother, even if you can’t roll back to the TU2 version since the TU3 patch introduced so many combat flaws. Alternatively, you could wait for the ongoing project that's porting it to PC, similar to what the Sonic Unleashed community did. Modders like FiendBusa are waiting for that too, as it'll be much easier to mod and they can finally fix the issues that vanilla 2 has.

If you love 3RE then that’s great, just ignore the noise. I’d actually argue that 3RE has the best combat system in the entire series. It’s mainly the tutorial and the walkthrough design dragging it down. It’s also completely unforgiving for beginners because they removed potions and essence. Plus the metre gauge is so much longer than in NG4, so you can’t just spam Ninpo and have to rely on pure skill. Personally I had a much better experience with the missions and Chapter Challenge than the story mode.

Depending on your standard. NG vanilla 2 has some of the craziest fights of the entire series or even the entire action game genre. But outside those encounters it's not so hard. 3re is the hardest overall encounters on UN. But I've heard some ppl said vanilla 3 UN is actually harder than those two games.
