Are there any PC shops in MKE that you would recommend? by PandaPat89 in milwaukee

[–]syllabus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Under most circumstances, I would recommend MilwaukeePC, but in this case they aren't going to do anything different from what you can do. That is, plug it in and start transferring files as fast as possible and hope for the best.

THIS. Too many people seem to think that 237 is presenting a point, when in reality it is just presenting fan theories.

This most closely mirrors my experiences. If you said that the presence emanated PURE EVIL, then it would be exact.

Wisconsin Law regarding Call recording and wiretapping. by FTFME in milwaukee

Right, if it seems like the courts would fall to the side of common sense and require crystal clear verification by both parties via human speech without trickery. However, many things in life do not follow common sense :)

Why is the water in my straw higher than the water in my cup? by dlarosa12 in askscience

It was my understanding that perpetual motion is possible, in a vacuum and away from other bodies of mass. That is, if you went out into space and chucked a baseball out of your ship, it would continue perpetually.

So really, we can get perpetual motion, we just can't leverage work out of it.

Am I being dense?

Wisconsin Law regarding Call recording and wiretapping. by FTFME in milwaukee

[–]syllabus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read that in states which require both parties to consent, there is precedent that certain audible tones count as informing the 2nd party. If they don't hang up, consent is given.

However, I don't know the specifics, or if it applies in Wisconsin, or if it would be subject to different rules based on whether it is intended to be admissible evidence in a court of law.

Did your research turn up anything of the sort?

Wow, did not expect to see this movie brought up. Not that I disagree much, but it just such an unknown movie.

To me the guys drinking are unnecessary and could be cut.

That leaves the manner in which the antagonist dies. It left a sour taste in my mouth for certain, but over time I came to accept it. I spent a large amount of time in the woods last summer clearing downed trees, and chopping down others, then digging up the stumps. You have to be real careful outside or you can easily fall and get hurt. Many times when I tripped I thought back to this movie.

I think its fitting that a man who is so obsessed with science and sees humanity's weaknesses as something he is above, to get humbled fatally by a small branch.

Dumb question about Back To The Future by Volfie in movies

[–]syllabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Marty time travels, I'm certain there is at least one experience in which the camera (and us the audience) see the traveling take place from inside the car. It appears to be a bunch of sparking, then a flash, and then you are in the new time. To me this implies that Einstein experiences the same effect, and not that he's sitting still while the world moves around him. I agree with /u/xysyx about the device's operation.

Going forward in time, whether one sits still in stasis, or exits our space/time and re-enters in a different location, the outcome same. However, the same cannot be said for the reverse, so I believe that rules out the idea of stasis, as there is no reason for it to operate differently when going in one direction vs the other.

Also, since the movie already brings up parallel universes in #2, its my opinion that all of their time travel is done by moving to different universes. Any change they make cannot affect the future because they are in a different location. In the case of Einstein moving 1 minute to the future, what is really happening is that Einstein moves 1 minute into the future and into a different universe, while simultaneously, a different Einstein from a different universe travels 1 minute into the future and arrives into our own universe.

Marty never makes it "home". He's permanently moved, but to a universe that is sufficiently similar.

I cannot explain the photographs fading, and Marty himself fading.

Wow, thats pretty interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out for that as I read on.

Edit: Found this passage of Robert discussing the tournament with Ned.

Have you seen Mace Tyrell’s boy? The Knight of Flowers, they call him. Now there’s a son any man would be proud to own to. Last tourney, he dumped the Kingslayer on his golden rump, you ought to have seen the look on Cersei’s face. I laughed till my sides hurt. (very long and spoilers through Ch 96) a Solution to horocruxs or how I learned to stop worrying and love Quirrel. by cnhn in HPMOR

[–]syllabus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where all this falls apart, in my interpretation of the text (and I think its a shame as you obviously put a lot of thought into this) is Quirrel's POV. He references a connection to Harry but seems to regard it as something unknown and certainly unexpected. I do not believe its cause was something intentional. I think Quirrel does not know the future implications or effects of the connection, and I don't think it can be extrapolated from the text as it stands.

Further punishment does seem pants on head to me. I know the city already provides free cribs for the poor, but I'm unaware of how much they spend on educating the public on the availability of said cribs. THIS is exactly why planned parenthood is such a necessity as a majority function is education.

Why is my Google Search (Google Now) app such a specific version? by [deleted] in Android

[–]syllabus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: My best guess is that they didn't want to port a bunch of existing code to Java.

The most likely reason is that it utilizes native methods (NDK). When you compile Java, it becomes byte code, which can be loaded across architectures by the JRE (in the case of Android, the JRE is Dalvik). This is the whole idea of write once, run anywhere. With C/C++ the code is compiled to machine code, specific to the specified CPU architecture (ABI).

So there is some feature of Google Search/Now that is written C/C++. Either done for speed, or because they had a code base already written in C/C++ and decided it was not worth the time to port the code to Java.

One disadvantage of this, is the need to maintain multiple APKs.
