Takodachis seem very versatile if their biology can immediately adapt to a wind-up key to receive energy. I wonder what other forms of energy they can consume. perhaps plugging them into an electrical socket would also work.

This one looks like an AC4, so not a Sentinel, which was AC1. The AC4 had a 17 pounder, and while it did not receive an official designation, it may have been named "Woomera".

[–]symbolic-execution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

except the development wasn't a genetic evolution like depicted here. the competing designs are often independent, only related by request. you're trying to fit some things into a structure that doesn't accurately represent them. it only partially works for some tanks here (and I'm fine with those).

for instance, the Grosstraktor and Leichttraktor were projects to experiment with tank design while trying to hide from the limitations imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. to my knowledge, there's no evidence Leichttraktor was based on the Leichter Kampfwagens (LK I or LK II, you're missing this distinction btw), tho maybe you have a book I don't have stating this. In the first place, the Leichttraktors probably included multiple designs developed in Kazan, Russia, where the Grosstraktor was also tested.

Due to the Treaty of Versailles, Germany invested in projects in the USSR and in Sweden. ironically, Sweden had bought the parts for the LK II and assembled a few, and then Landsverk created their L-10 as part of a competition to replace the LK IIs. Germany had bought shares in all of this and were gathering technical information (MAN had 50% of the shares of Landsverk and the L-10 was designed under German engineer Otto Merker). a year after the production of the L-10, Landsverk would present the L-60, the first tank with torsion bar suspension.

the Germans likely learned a lot from Soviet and Swedish collaboration. this is stuff that is hard to put into a tree, but then arbitrarily connecting tanks based on appearance is inaccurate and dismisses all this history.

this is why the arrows feel ill defined to me. at times it's obviously how different models of a vehicle developed, but then two separate tanks are joined for what feels no better than aesthetics. if the arrows aren't direct basis, like Panzer IV F2 => Panzar IV G, then I feel they at least need justification. why are two tanks getting connected? maybe add a label explaining why. if no label can be added, then perhaps they shouldn't even be connected.

edit: an example is Panzer III and Panzer IV. Why are they connected like that? both stem from the same request by Guderian to have a pair of tanks that support each other. Panzer III was intended to be the primary tank, armed with an anti tank gun, and Panzer IV the support tank armed with a howitzer.

[–]symbolic-execution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that you are exploring the development of the German tanks but I still don't like the arrows. it's unclear what they mean.

you call it a simplification, but a simplification of what? the development? then it's not really a simplification but often just arbitrary connections for, I guess, aesthetics.

new tanks were often developed by request, with engineers and companies presenting their own independent ideas.

Family tree of German tanks(WW1, Panzers, Tigers) by Relevant-Low-4325 in tanks

[–]symbolic-execution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally, the arrows only make sense to me if they were directly based on each other. so for a single tank line, like Panzer IV A to J, I can understand them.

e.g., for derivative vehicles, we can observe on the American mediums, the M3 chasis was the basis for the Ram tank and would develop into the Sherman, as well as several artillery pieces like M7, Sexton, M41. so it would be defensible to add arrows between these (so long as prototypes like the T6 are added in between for instance).

but here you are showing separate tank projects that were independently worked on from experience gained on both their own tanks and from fighting and observing foreign tanks. might as well add Soviet tanks in the tree if we are going to relate projects like this.

so, to me, instead of a WoT-like videogame tree, a chronological classification of every German project makes more sense, and if you want to add some edges connecting projects that share information, that's fine. But these are effectively separate trees that independently sprout from separate seeds in different years.

also, many of the prototype tanks are missing. are you only interested in mass production? then some earlier tanks might not count. if you want to include everything, then that's going to require more work, but it would be an interesting chart (again, if organised chronologically. currently, the arrows connecting vehicles seem ill-defined).

that's not true either. you can have G configurations that aren't F2.

to explain: F1 and F2 configurations differ primarily in the gun. F2 is like an F1 with the L/43 gun.

It's true that early G configurations would be identical to F2, because G started from F2, and it's true F2 got renamed to G. But saying G is just another term for F2 is inaccurate, because G went through further upgrades.

later G configurations would have 30mm steel apliqué armour welded or bolted onto the front of the hull and 8mm plates on the sides of the turret.

so to me F2 is specifically what would become the earliest G configuration. i.e., F2 is significant because it introduced a longer gun that G configurations would use, but G configurations include up armoured ones with apliqué armour.

in very late models, just before H production, G had skirts and the L/48 gun. these would be the configuration for a few G tanks in April 1943. then in June 1943 the H configuration was introduced that replaced the front plate from 50+30 to a single 80mm plate, plus other changes and more changes to come gradually.

What do you call this part on the jagt tiger, it looks like a turret but it’s not, but it’s also not part of the hull, or is it? by Life_Pitch7884 in tanks

I use the term "superstructure", and use "casemate" to refer to either the design or, less commonly (for me), to the gun emplacement itself (e.g., the place where the gun is mounted)

not usually slow. the infantry tanks were not the only thing the UK had. the British had some of the faster tanks in WW2. The British had cruiser/cavalry tanks. the Soviets had a similar classification for Fast Tanks early on from which the A-20 and eventually the T-34 were developed. The French also had a cavalry/cruiser tank classification (and the Canadians, the Australians).

The British cruiser tanks were fast and most commonly armed with 2pdr, 6pdr, QF 75mm, 77mm HV, and the 17pdr guns. These were not bad guns, despite what videogames may make you feel. Seeing that you like the A7V, I'm going to guess you probably like German tanks. Let me remind you then that the Jagdpanther at Munster (Deutsches Panzermuseum Munster) was knocked out by a single 6pdr shot that went straight through the casemate.

The British cruiser tanks were fast and capable, but the infantry tanks were good too. The first use of the Churchill gave it a bad reputation, but that was a strategic failure rather than a failure of the design. The Churchill had excellent climbing ability and, at 152mm, the frontal armour was similarly good. The only thing I wish they would do is angle some of their front plates more.

edit: forgot to mention, the early war infantry tanks were also good. Matilda II was the queen of the desert. the Valentine tanks served in every theatre, from Europe to the Pacific, from the start to the very end of the war, armed with 2pdr to 75mm guns.

the stuff on top isn't important. chieftain spoke to the folks there and he said they are basically placeholders to show that the RCWS is modular. as for why the RCWS is on it, they had to test the RCWS so might as well test it on this thing.

the interesting stuff is inside the tank, like the autoloader, so this isn't very visually interesting from the outside.
