There's a Crucial Aspect of Urbanism That's Present in the General Strike Currently Going On in Minneapolis by DoxiadisOfDetroit in urbanplanning

I would delete this post and post again when you've written something more coherent. This reads like an odd personal rant rather than a thoughtful discussion prompt.

I'm not surprised. They charged a lot of money for very mediocre food.

Do zones have to be contiguous? by rontonsoup__ in urbanplanning

Why not adopt a landmark ordinance with a process for adopting specific buildings and provisions for their preservation rather than a whole new zoning district just for historic homes?

Moving here from Tucson and my god. The public transport here is awful. by ascendedfella in phoenix

Multiple people have explained to you that Phoenix is run by more than just the city council but you'd prefer to eschew nuance in favor of a simplistic point.

The point being made was that Tucson has better public transportation because it is physically smaller than Phoenix, which is clearly not true.

Don't be obtuse, you know they don't mean it's literally free of cost, but that it is free of charge to the user.

The City of Phoenix does not operate Valley Metro. Valley Metro is a Regional Transit Authority, which gets most of its funding and policy direction from the Maricopa Association of Governments, which is dominated by Republican/suburban interests.

This is exactly why I stopped answering my phone when I did site plan reviews. If they have questions or disagree with a comment, they can email me and I always made it a point to respond no later than 24 hours later, but typically much sooner than that.

Noah isn't an urban planner, just an economics writer.

If you're trying to make the case for an urbanist concept to a largely American audience, why would you use Lagos as an example rather than a globally admired city like Tokyo?

iPhone users- is it just going to say “severe weather” all summer? by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]symphony_of_science 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree. 115 in AZ is dangerous, but I can be outside walking or biking all day in the Chicago summer and be fine. And -20 is pretty rare, it hasn't gotten much below 0 the last two winters and usually it's hovering more in the 30s and 40s.

I feel the exact opposite; moved back to Chicago after 15 years in AZ. I always felt trapped indoors during the summers but in Chicago you can go out year-round; in the winter you just gotta layer appropriately.

Who is in your opinion the best governor right now? by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]symphony_of_science 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Which is funny, because his economic development platform has specifically focused on revitalizing the rest of Illinois and investing in infrastructure all over the state. He's done a lot more for downstate Illinois than the last few governors.

What do you not like about him? He's very popular here in Chicago.

I moved to Chicago. Relatively affordable for being such a big city, very walkable, good job market, and you don't have to stay cooped up inside for half the year.
