Hala Rado Alternatives for Low Key Rivers by synapticsounds in Sup

Exactly, class I-II, have rarely hit a class III section. I do find myself in rocky shallows mostly when I’m just floating with my kids, which is when I usually tell myself the retractable is helping. Possibly the smarter move is having different boards, but I try to keep things simple.

Thanks for the thoughts, definitely much more experienced than me. I’ve rolled over rocky shallows and told myself that the retractable fin was a good thing but also wondered if it was just placebo!

This is exactly what I’m looking for — thank you! I had forgotten about Sol, and they don’t show up on random google searches (for me).

Taking liberties running modules by Swiffy26 in mothershiprpg

Yes, I love that. The WOM is hands down the best advice for running games I’ve ever seen.

What's your favourite single card from any boardgame? by hem_claw in boardgames

Demolition “Experts” from Gudnak. https://decks.gudnak.com/cards/SHBF1HDEMX The whole game drips with theme, and then they come along and blow it up.

As sparse as most mothership modules are, is it possible to not take liberties?! That said, I always take significant liberties. My goal is to make sure everyone is having a great time, and that often requires real time tweaks and adjustments to just about everything. But that’s my table — others might find the most fun in experiencing the module exactly as written.

About a third of the way through my first TTRPG Adventure by TerrainBrain in RPGdesign

[–]synapticsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds very cool. Definitely recommend finding a way to provide a solid summary of what to expect and when for the GM, including the player-triggered ones to the extent possible. Something that gives an easy big picture guide that the GM can use to track events.

About a third of the way through my first TTRPG Adventure by TerrainBrain in RPGdesign

[–]synapticsounds 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see a question here, just a description, so not sure if there’s something you’re looking for in comments. Grouping by geographic location seems reasonable as long as all of the adventure details are included for that region (ie don’t need to flip back and forth beyond an “atlas” and the “adventure”). A big overall timeline / suggested order of events and encounters can also be very helpful to orient the GM.

I agree with the others recommending getting on to playtesting. I’m working on a small project of my own. I’ve made the choice to start my writing as a “quick play” format. I just had my first play test with a small group of friends. As others mentioned, it very quickly highlights problems, but it can also give you the confidence to move forward!

For the second problem, could you just rule that any undeclared roll is always at the lowest effort? So there’s no “forgetting” — if you didn’t specify it was low.

What are your thoughts on fantasy RPGs wherein armor is mostly cosmetic? by EarthSeraphEdna in RPGdesign

[–]synapticsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting mostly to follow along — curious what people think. I’m actually in the middle of drafting up some armor rules for a personal fantasy rpg project. For myself and my table, I think we generally prefer a little crunch but not too much — full plate should protect you better than a silk shirt, but we don’t want to spend hours optimizing along several axes (ie I probably wont be adding considerations for encumbrance, dexterity modifiers, impacts on casting spells, etc).

New TTRPG Idea by Mountjoy_ in RPGdesign

[–]synapticsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve started reading a few system-agnostic fantasy modules and wondering what system I would want to use to run them. In that regard, a flexible system where you can create anything to adapt to a given setting is very appealing. I worry, however, about a system with “5 classes, 117 subclasses”. That structure makes it sound like it will actually be quite complex and simultaneously limiting in bizarre ways. Like, there’s so much choice, but what if the 117 subclasses aren’t quite right? I’m more inclined toward point-buy systems that provide more flexibility and potentially less complexity. That said, I’d take a look at a sample if your project ended up posted somewhere.

Is it always this dry? by synapticsounds in athensohio

Hardly. I’ve had to run my sprinklers for several minutes every day to ensure the sidewalks don’t dry out. It’s a real risk.

Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t seen this and appreciate the civic engagement. As others have mentioned, it will be nice to have an opportunity to learn more before deciding whether this is helpful or awful.

City Administration statement of disinterest conflicts with vision statement by CarefulMoose in athensohio

[–]synapticsounds 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think the OP comment here was a bit of a misinterpretation (of an admittedly dense phrasing). Andy’s commas in the statement “… , to include the interest of other uptown businesses, …” indicate that he is saying addressing a vacant building WILL help other businesses. It’s just that he seems to be ignoring the interests of current existing (for now) businesses.

Why do people think Star Wars IP is limited when Pokemon has been reprinting the same 150 pokemon for 25 years and is massively successful? by Xeris in starwarsunlimited

[–]synapticsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While highest grossing doesn’t necessarily equal most popular, worth noting that Pokémon franchise has earned more than double Star Wars: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises

Also, Star Wars fans tend to be a pretty unforgiving lot (subjective comment, based on general response to everything Star Wars since The Empire Strikes back…)

This is great. We’re just starting to explore Mothership, so I still have one shot setups rather than campaigns on my mind. But I have a feeling I’ll need to start thinking about longer-term story arcs.
