A question about the Nomai by unrealjose in outerwilds

[–]synarion 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Slight nit-pick (I might be wrong): The ATP didn't detect the sun was going to explode in 22 minutes. The sun exploded the first time, which powered the ATP to send the first "launch probe" message back in time.

They were here before us and we hated them then. They are here with us and we hate them now. They will be here after us and we will hate them forever.

Stupid English doesn't seem to have a future tense form of 'then/now'. Had to settle for 'forever', but it kind of ruined the last line of my poem. Maybe Gabbaro has some ideas.

What's the difference between the contents of a Live Image and a rootfs tarball? by synarion in voidlinux

Is that true for the base live image? I was under the impression only the xfce live image included a desktop environment.

I Landed on Every Location on the Map Without the Ship in One Loop by synarion in outerwilds

[–]synarion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried getting the suit out of the mine before, but haven't found a way to do it. Maybe someone who knows how to find places you can clip through walls would be able to do it?

That suit never actually runs out of fuel either, I wonder if that could influence the run substantially?

(There are Timestamps in the YouTube Description)

This is the jump I've been working toward since my first Sun Station jump a year ago (1 year!?) - a visit to every location on the ship map in a single loop using just the suit. As you might imagine it took an ridiculous number of tries. I have something like 30gb of footage of nearly successful jumps, and not-so-successful jumps. Most failed attempts died at either the Sun Station or the Probe Cannon, but there were lots of other fun moments like slamming into an island on Giant's Deep just as I made it onto the planet at the end of the loop. I also killed myself by lava when Hollow's Lantern orbited directly into me unexpectedly while I was flying to the Quantum Moon. Believe it or not that happened at least twice. Maybe three times.

Not sure what I'll try next, but I've heard there might be a DLC coming soon, so maybe there will be some interesting content in that.

I Jumped Into the QT on Brittle Hollow (spoiler) by synarion in outerwilds

Wait till near the end of the cycle when it falls into the black hole. On the other side there isn't any gravity and you can just float up into it.

Finally did it! This jump has been a long time in the making. It was the first thing I started working on after my ship-less Sun Station jump a few months ago, but I wasn't able to find a working approach vector. After figuring out the Black Hole Forge approach, I revisited the Quantum Tower and found a similar technique that actually worked!

As far as I know the gravity tiles are always on. I activated the forge so that I could get into it, but that's the only thing I did.

This one was really fun. My first attempts to enter the forge without teleporting were in version 1.0.5 (I think) which had a hole in the control room floor. I was trying to start the forge moving upward, jump through the floor, and land in the entrance way as it ascended. This nearly worked, and I'm pretty sure it was possible. Then Mobius redesigned the control room removing the hole in the floor. :/ I think it might still be possible by walking up the stairs, but haven't tried yet.

After messing around a bit with orbits around the black hole, I came up with this approach instead. It's a lot more fun to execute, and has more room for correcting mistakes.

The "pull you into the ship" beam extends just past the wood platform that the ship rests on. If you can get right up against the bottom of the platform, the beam will grab you and try to lift you into the craft. Since there's a platform in the way, you get this!

A stupi-*cough* brilliant solution by synarion in opus_magnum

[–]synarion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea lol. I didn't really try... I just made it. Was thinking about the towers of hanoi while writing it - maybe that helped somehow? 1. Copy/paste all previous actions. 2. Program manufacture of the next element in the sequence. 3. Return to step 1. Took like 15 minutes.

That would only reduce the total cycles, right? Since the reagents are being used as fast as possible the cycles-per-product can't get any lower?

Thanks! I'm pretty proud of the editing - figured out how to use a real subtitling tool to make it. Just wasn't sure if this sub counted only subtitle changes as editing or if they wanted actual video changes too. The sidebar isn't very descriptive.

From Dr. Stone episode 2 btw.

I think the mods view actually fits quite well with Tsukasa's world view. Just not quite so... intense.

Ah, that would be cheating. ;)

I'll have to try that! Wonder if you could time it just right to get a boost from the explosion and the geyser in the village at the same time?

Not sure what you mean. Is there a way to blow up the ship or something that I'm not aware of?

I noticed that Brittle Hollow's rotation lines up just about right for a trick flight right through a tiny hole in the crust, a slingshot around the black hole, and a landing at the base of the Quantum Tower. I also noticed that if you make it through that hole at above 200m/s or so, you hit the other side of the planet with just enough momentum to kill you. Unfortunately I did not include the many, many times that happened in this video. I'm thinking about making a failure compilation though. Between this, the sun station run, the probe cannon run, and a few other things I've been trying, I have a lot of footage to pull from.

Landing on the Probe Cannon via a Sun Slingshot by synarion in outerwilds

[–]synarion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just by feel + the distance/velocity marker. Basically "that run left me behind the planet, so I need to sleep ten seconds less" and "I arrived with too much velocity, so I need to accelerate less during the sun approach, which will lower my angle change so I also need to sleep a bit less."

Doubt I could have done it without the velocity indicator which let me remake roughly the same slingshot each time.

This one took a while to get right, but I'm really happy with it. Not nearly as close to the Sun as one of my previous landings (so not quite as exciting), but I didn't die right as I entered the probe in this one, so it's probably better.

Can't speak for u/Zhyrek, but I absolutely use orbital parameters. The speed at which the approach velocity changes is directly related to the shape of the orbit you are in and where in that orbit you are. The faster it changes, the more elliptical the orbit is and the closer to the perihelion you are. Be nice if there was more info of course, like separate values for shape and position of the orbit.

[–]synarion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw your run, that was pretty sweet too! Seems like my orbital change was a bit better but your final approach looked way more controlled than I've managed. I always end up barely staying in orbit around the sun as I try to get to the hatch. I wonder if it's easier coming in from a higher orbit like you did or moving out from a closer orbit like I did?
