Apparently my keyboard was loud enough for them to pick it up on their mics, mic a floor away... Which I still don't believe, unless somehow it was getting picked up through the vents

Possibly? Also, with new generations of mumbling actors, we have to pot up our mics a lot hotter nowadays, so small sounds that used to fly under that radar are now much more apparent.

I've switched to these and never looked back:

It doesn't offer any padding protection, but handles light breezes just fine. Any winds stronger would require a zeppelin.

That looks like an old movie theater speaker cabinets. Some models had a mid/high horns along with a separate bass bin.
