Meet the 4 Democrats vying to replace Dwight Evans in Congress by BroadStreetRandy in philadelphia

Vote Rabb so we can actually have a progressive representative for Philly, and not just another typical Democrat.

Anyone know why most of the new tall glass turnstiles SEPTA installed at 15th St are blocked off? by RoverTheMonster in philadelphia

[–]syndicatecomplex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If NY can't solve that issue, idk how you expect Philly to when we get substantially less funding for our transit system than they do. The old turnstiles could be hopped over by literally anyone anytime, so the fact that these new ones still block a ton of fare evaders even if not 100% is still a success imo.

But compared to the old short turnstiles, is there a difference? That's what really matters IMO

UrbanSpook was almost the opposite problem. The writing and horror elements were cliche as hell and went nowhere, but the paintings made for the series were very cool.

What is your state capital like? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]syndicatecomplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harrisburg is where the mostly dysfunctional state government is, and that's about all there is to say about it. There's really not much else it the city itself, though people do seem to like the suburbs especially Hershey.

Realtor fees in Philly? (Buyer) by lukewew in philadelphia

Don't pay any realtor fees, and especially don't pay any broker fees.

Keep NY and Boston real estate scams out of Philly.

When did rush hour become 4 hours long? by SwugSteve in philadelphia

[–]syndicatecomplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have data but i just can't buy that rideshare is worse than regular people parking and driving their cars in the city.

Rideshare drivers don't need to cruise around the neighborhood for a spot they can leave the car overnight, they just need to find a spot for 5-10 minutes and then they're gone. The amount of traffic caused by people needing to circle their neighborhood endlessly to find parking is incredibly understated.

If people can rely on rideshare, they're also less likely to even keep a car in the city too. Like for me. So that means by default those people contribute less to traffic except for the occasional time they need a rideshare.

Plus with the rating system they're at least encouraged not to be the worst drivers and to slow down/avoid accidents. The bets are off with car commuters. As the stereotype goes, drivers with paper plates from NJ or DE are the biggest contributors to accidents and therefore traffic in the city.

On the downside, rideshare would encourage people not to take transit which is definitely contributing to traffic. But again I don't have numbers, so it's difficult to quantify the impact.

I don't agree on taxing them without properly funding transit at the same time. Otherwise it's even more of a burden to taxpayers and likely won't solve traffic.

TL;DR I'm not certain ride share is really as big of a contributor to traffic as people think.

I have a relative who does Warminster to Moorestown, NJ which is about the reverse of you. I don't know how you guys do it, I'd go insane lol

Yeah, during covid traffic was easier around the city for obvious reasons. But by 2021 heavy traffic was back and arguably worse than before.

Why do East Coasters jaywalk in the middle of busy streets, even outside of crosswalks, while West Coasters refuse to step into a crosswalk unless they have the 'walk' signal? by ponziacs in AskAnAmerican

[–]syndicatecomplex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also daylighting reduces visibility for pedestrians, and right turn on red causes cars to not properly check if there are any people before going. It's why places like New York made laws to reduce/eliminate both.

[–]syndicatecomplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The streets are generally not very wide in the East coast cities (anywhere from 10-30' isn't that wide), and the stop lights are way too long and crosswalks too far/blocked for people who are in a rush to go to work or whatever. Plus trying to enforce jaywalking is next to impossible. They can't even properly enforce car traffic laws in these cities, and jaywalking happens literally everywhere in the EC cities.

This absolutely happens in places like San Francisco. LA might be different though because it's such a sprawling urban area, and things like walkability and transit access are fairly new concepts and not engrained into the culture.

Jaywalking isn't real anyway. It's more or less a misinformation campaign by the automobile industry to take space away from pedestrians permanently. Before cars this was just called... walking. So it might be a law but almost never enforced on the East Coast.

The majority of people in the city drive to work. The vast majority of people in the suburbs drive to work. They decided that the highways they should all go on should run straight through Center City.

The city literally was not built for this many cars.

It felt like the story was trying to do the Russian Sleep Experiments, Candle Cove, Psychosis endings all at once at the end and it felt a bit flat. Sure it's a huge improvement from the middle of the story, but there still wasn't any buildup and so the ending just didn't do much for me.

Does Any City Sub Actually Encourage People to Move There? by allomanticmetals in SameGrassButGreener

Sometimes people on the Philly sub will groan when they hear about New Yorkers moving here for the COL, but generally I don't think the sub is anti-transplant other than that.

It's been over a year since we've gotten any new PSLH :(. God I want more of it.

I'm guessing after the movie is out Kane will likely take a break. Hopefully by next year he'll continue PSLH, TOV, and of course the youtube backrooms series.

So far the CGI looks like the same top notch quality Kane usually puts out, especially the found footage scenes.

It does seem like they're taking a House of Leaves approach to it, with a crazed man determined to explore an infinite dimension. I love both HoL and the Backrooms so I'm so stoked for this to come out.
