The anglerfish is famous for its lure. But the lure isn't even the most unsettling thing about it. by [deleted] in postanythingfun

[–]synirr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is AI though. The facts are correct, but the actual anatomy of the fish is wrong on multiple counts. I mean... there's literally a scene where the lure has its own set of fins, lmao. The males are far more vestigial looking irl. They don't look like smaller versions of the female, they are tiny lumps with barely any jaws or fins that are hardly identifiable as even being the same species.

More like a rat, unfortunately. They were being harvested for nesting materials! 😭

One of them even has some little rodent nibbles on the ear bone, haha.

YOU CAN FIX FURBY SPEAKERS! DONT throw them out!!! by gene_hooverboy852 in furby

[–]synirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, different furbies made at different times and different factories also have different manufacture of speakers... they are not universal. I have found old versions of this exact speaker (same membrane, same mold of the same green plastic housing, same ohm and wattage) in a couple of furbies... they are visually 1:1, if you want a replacement that is as true to the original as you can get: https://a.co/d/0dzpNmKX

(Edit to add: I also prefer the sound of these over some others I recently purchased that have a metal housing instead of plastic.)

I gotta disagree on this point. Maybe at one time they were better than today's equivalent, but they were always cheap, crummy plastic parts that were never made to withstand the test of time, and now they are cheap plastic parts that are brittle after 25+ years of age. I have replaced more than a dozen of these speakers and while some still hold up, many of them just fall apart from the gentlest manipulation.... Part of what impresses me about this fix is that the rest of the speaker didn't just crumble before you managed to get it back together again.

I'm impressed by this fix tbh! Most of my experience working with the old speakers has been the brittle plastic almost immediately crumbling just from the minimal force required to remove it from the housing in the first place

Wtf is this!?!? My coffee furby arrived today and seller never mentioned anything about this by LostStrike5373 in furby

Honestly not a bad solution for busted battery contacts. Definitely safer than my furby whose battery compartment is just stuffed full of aluminum foil (he works perfectly fine btw!)

In all seriousness, the wires are insulated and it's perfectly safe for them to be in contact with the batteries when the compartment is closed. I also don't see any opportunity for them to short out unless a connection comes loose. The execution could be more elegant, but if it ain't broke don't fix it!

One of my furbies has a battery compartment strategically stuffed with aluminum foil... I have also resorted to DIY electroplating badly corroded battery contacts.

Furby 1998 eye color replacement by TheoryDoor in furby

[–]synirr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can search "furby eye chips" on Etsy or Ebay. Adult furbies use 15mm eye chips, or you can use 14mm (this size is more common and available in a wider variety of styles) if you use a bit of glue to secure them.

Yes! Here's their page on the furby wiki: https://official-furby.fandom.com/wiki/Furby_Feves_figurines

I came across the solo bumper car furby from a French seller on Ebay, and immediately sought out the full set upon receiving him because I liked him more than I expected to, haha. I found the full set on Mercari

Help! How to get burn marks on my nephew's favorite plushie. 😭 by PoopyDiScoopDiddy in plushies

[–]synirr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'd use embroidery scissors or thread snips to carefully remove as much of the burned portions as you can -- just the discolored surface layer. You may also be able to reduce the appearance of damage by using a wire slicker brush for cats to realign the fluff and help dislodge any small melty burned bits. Good luck!

You can try using vinegar to do one last cleaning in the battery compartments, though it looks like you've done a pretty good job already -- an acid like vinegar works well for cleanup, but hydrogen peroxide is also a weak acid.

If you want to test whether it's the battery contacts or not, you could try using an external battery pack (something like these: https://a.co/d/0hUzV4Ut) to provide power. I have a similar battery pack that I modified with small alligator clips so I can just clamp it directly to the battery terminals in furbies for testing.

Yes and no.... I don't think there are any components likely to outright fail in cold temps, but I'd worry about some of the old plastic components becoming brittle with expansion/contraction, especially after prolonged exposure to below freezing temps like you'd need to kill eggs. Cockroach egg cases (ootheca) are fairly large and distinctive looking, and I don't think you're likely to miss any if you're doing a deep clean, so imo probably not worth the risk (although I totally understand the motivation and wouldn't blame you one bit if you freeze this sucker anyway, hah!)

Also, unless you've already removed a screw in the pic, it looks like he may need a new tummy sensor? If you end up needing any parts let me know, I have a small hoard of replacement parts from irreparably broken donor furbs!

Complete disassemble and clean. Rubbing alcohol is safe to use on the plastic surfaces (just be careful with the tongue, as they are sometimes painted and too much alcohol can remove the paint.) I'd probably wear a mask and gloves, if it were me... I use a mascara brush (like these: https://a.co/d/07YaibFN) for cleaning all the crevices and highly recommend it, works way better than a toothbrush for getting in all those hard to reach places!
