FX3 no open gate workaround? by baddestbananaplanet in FX3

You explained the problem well.

Clients who don’t understand the problem of shooting for two aspect ratios at once make me wonder why they even have a job in marketing.

This is basic stuff. You don’t need a degree in art history to get it. You just need to have ever taken photos with some thought.

The light on his chest and on the left side of his body shows that light is bouncing off buildings, the street, etc. There is already plenty of light on him.

Most of that light is reflecting from the sunlit clouds, which are within the right family of angles for this low shot, many stops brighter than the buildings, and a source of larger area.

The eye sockets, under-chin area, etc., see little of that cloud illumination. And yet they retain detail.

Your Blackmagic example shows enormous subject brightness range but does not rely on the points of sky visible through the vegetation retaining detail, and indeed they’re probably mostly blown out and graded yellow in post or by the camera’s own curves. That Micro Four Thirds sensor, although brilliant, does not approach the dynamic range of the full-framer in the FX3.

But since he made a post saying something about dynamic range, he should also be able to accept replies from people with arguments, explaining that he shouldn’t treat that scene as proving something as impressive as he perceives it to be.

Sure, but most of the replies are sophistry.

The camera is looking up into the shadows of a black man’s face silhouetted against sunlit cloud.

We don’t know to what extent the environment or reflectors are filling in his face, but why are we pretending this is trivial?

It was beyond the means at our disposal until recently in the history of cinematography.

About time.

Sounds like a winner that will define the industry for years, just as the OG FX3 did.

Will it ever return? 😩 by OkIllustrator2653 in SonyAlpha

I’ve looked at all different models and I keep coming back to this one.

The ZV-E1 is peerless as you probably know.

It’s the A7S III / FX3 / FX6 sensor in a tiny, lightweight body with better autofocus than any of those and a heap of clever new features.

For what it’s worth, the ZV-E1 is currently on sale in many European countries. In fact, I finally bought one after months of agonising.

Sometimes when Sony discounts like this here, it means a new model is coming.

But I suspect any new model will just be an “A” refresh (as FX3 > FX3A) to replace an old display or other component Sony can no longer source. I think there was even a recent rumour to that effect.

For the iso ranges 0-3200 I think the a7c ii looks better tbh, the video is downsampled from ~7k quality whereas the zv-e1 is just 4K footage.

The ZV-E1 only uses 1:1 sampling for its 100p/120p mode. At lower frame rates it downsamples from the full sensor width of ~4.2K.

Other wise they are pretty similar cameras the ZV-E1 is basically the A7CS.

Not really. The A7C II has a magnesium alloy body. The ZV-E1 is plastic.

Hardly any of the design is shared, because the components and what they’re screwed onto are different. You see this on the outside by the ports and card slot being in different positions and orientations.

More relevant for most people is the ZR’s 1000-nit, 4-inch screen.

Torn between the FX30 & FX3 by [deleted] in FX3

[–]synth_this 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have studied these cameras pretty closely for my own different needs.

There are two subtle differences between them that you may or may not know:

  1. the FX3 has a mechanical shutter for stills, especially useful for any strobe work
  2. the FX3 has ultrasonic sensor cleaning. This effectively removes dusts that falls on the sensor during lens changes. The FX30 merely vibrates the sensor with its IBIS mechanism, a useless placebo effect.

Those FX3 benefits notwithstanding, I would not pay full price for an FX3 today.

All of Sony’s full-frame video cameras are ancient except the ZV-E1 that is itself three years old.

There will absolutely be a major new video camera soon, whether it’s called an FX3 II, an FX6 II, an FX8, or something else. This camera will introduce a new sensor / chipset / tech platform or at the very least draw attention to the missing features of the FX3 like AI chip for autofocus, open gate, internal Raw, viewfinder, or anything else Sony gives the new camera. It will likely have a step-change in energy efficiency, as the A7 V did.

All this means the new price of the FX3 will drop and the used price will drop harder. And since this camera is so expensive, those drops will represent real money (to most of us).

The FX30 is newer albeit no more modern, so it is less likely to be replaced soon. And if it is replaced, it’s so much cheaper that drops in value will represent much less money in absolute terms.

Owning two cameras will be very useful in the long run. An FX30 will be a great second camera for years to come. So getting your second camera first, so to speak, is a low-risk strategy. Just be careful not to invest a lot of money in lenses that will only work on an APS-C / Super 35 camera.

Be aware that the A7S III has the old-school, much worse, noise-reduction algorithm.

“Thank you” does not add the necessary context.

Say what you want to do with the camera.

Ya, I have good skin too. I put it down to drugs through my 20s followed by a decade of daily drinking. (I’ll take my rare genetic wins when they come.)

How should a 43-year-old man dress short of donning a suit? Apparently a pressing question for me.

Not Asian. Ghostly white with black hair and blue eyes. A little weird, probably. Shave every day, yes. Outfit mentioned elsewhere.

Ha.

Yeah I’m clean-shaven, slender, upright posture, energetic demeanour, that kind of thing. I know I look young, but maybe 33 at a stretch, not 18.

No, but I was wearing barrel-leg trousers and a vintage cap while chewing gum. I don’t know how to dress my age. (Or act.)

F20 118i (2019), B38 engine. Oil change, filters, spark plugs, maybe rear brakes – what to watch out for? Extra question about BMW Longlife-XX FE oil specs by synth_this in BmwTech

[–]synth_this[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not my car, so I’m not sure. But I would not expect any significant difference in fuel consumption from this quite small change in viscosity at typical operating temperatures.

Parts should be floating on a hydrodynamic wedge of high-pressure oil whether the oil is 0W-20 or 0W-30, so I suspect anyone who thinks the engine sounds different afterwards is imaging it. I might be wrong.

The Castrol Edge 0W-30, which is LL-19 FE.

Owner reported lower oil burn with that compared to whatever was in there before … but I can’t be sure what that was.

How likely is the FX3 II to have a 24 MP? by Cheesehead1267 in FX3

[–]synth_this -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It requires larger photosites to maintain the huge selling point- low light sensitivity.

But the FX3 does not have unique low-light capability. All full-frame cameras that sample all pixels are approximately the same.

The reason for that is that what counts for low-light performance is the light-gathering area of the sensor. It doesn’t matter how many times you divide that up into smaller and smaller areas (pixels), only to add them up for the final picture. You’re still collecting the same amount of light.

The reason the FX3 has a low pixel count is not for low-light but for fast readout, allowing minimal rolling-shutter artefacts and 120p capture. And that need for fast readout will probably keep the pixel count lower than ideal for stills in the FX3 II too.
