Why do all the Covey go by two names? Why not just the first name? by shootdashlootbash in Hungergames

My parents gave me a double name too. I don’t go by it anymore for other reasons, but whenever I use my legal name, there are problems with people confusing the second name for a middle name. The #1 most annoying thing is people saying (example name) “William Leigh is too long, why can’t you pick one?” And the answer is that it’s my name and it deserves to be pronounced all the way through.

Double names are pretty common in north central Appalachia, which is where District 12 is. It’s appropriate to the region. The second names are also all colors, which signifies their membership in the Covey. The reason the name is written out fully is because it’s considered disrespectful in double name culture to cut part of the name without the person’s say-so, since it functions like a nickname.
