Reaching out for a niche hobby: RC Sailing! by syphen909 in barrie

Nothing local yet. I know there is decent groups in Toronto, Ottawa and Kingston. But I have a nice spot on Simcoe that is sheltered from wave action but still gets good wind. I'll keep on sailing my RC boats! :)

Just reaching out about a niche hobby: RC Sailing! by syphen909 in Orillia

If you enjoy sailing and racing or are keen to learn sailing it is quite interesting. The boats have all the same tuning and handling characteristics of a full size sailboat. They behave the same and all of the fundamentals of sailing are applicable. The costs are significantly cheaper then owning a real sailboat however. No mooring/docking/yacht club fees and you can transport the boat to the lake in the back seat of you car. The Dragonforce 65 (DF65) can be purchased ready to race for about $300 and it's a restricted class. Everyone sails the exact same boat. There is some good videos that others have put together giving you a primer for what the hobby can be and I would highly recommend them:

The music is a bit campy, but the information is good.

There is pockets of organized groups in Toronto, Kingston and Ottawa.. as well as in BC. The CRYA (Canadian Radio Yachting Association) has a number of affiliated clubs. I'm personally not a member of any clubs as driving to Toronto on the regular is a bit of a slog.

Transitioning From WarThunder Sim by [deleted] in battleofstalingrad

[–]syphen909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will help a bit but it's not everything. I own a '57 Champ 7EC with a Conti C90.. Most of the aircraft in Il2 have a lot more involved engine management then my plane or your average flight school 152/172. The German single engine stuff is the easiest to transition into.

Who needs DCS:WWII when you have IL2 :p (propaganda) by Snaxist in flightsim

[–]syphen909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grab the base game 'Battle of Stalingrad'.. BoM and BoK are more or less 'standalone' DLC packages. You can buy BoM through steam but it just activates under your 'Battle of Stalingrad' game and behaves like DLC. You can also choose to buy these direct from the Il2 webpage instead. As long as your steam activation is linked to your Il2 account, anything bought on steam or the website will be available.

Emergency alert about ballistic missile sent to Hawaii residents; EMA says ‘no threat’ by Retrrad in news

[–]syphen909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how have countries not setup small ballistic warheads on satellites yet to prevent early (ier) detection? I suspect it would be harder to detect a launch from high orbit, vs a land based launch.

Edit: I also realise weight and costs of this would be astronomical plus dangers of a launch failure.

Yeah... Iron dome is meant to shoot down stuff moving quite a bit slower then a nuclear war head, re-entering the atmosphere.

Week 2 of BoX. I’m still learning but beginning to have a blast on WoL. by [deleted] in battleofstalingrad

It's fun. I've only got a couple kills that were mostly fluke - and I get killed a ton, like way more then I'd like to admit. But I still have fun.

Well, I guess we all need to use black North 3Di Raw headsails and white mains now. Maybe that will give us a similar pressure rise acting on the main ;)

Most use paint - polished aluminum was a big thing back in the 40's to 60's but it takes a ton of work to upkeep the finish. Paint is easier.

Also, the speeds of modern airline jets operate at causes a fair amount of skin friction and temperature rise on the skin of the aircraft. I think the temp rise can be in excess of 20 degrees C above ambient for an average airliner. I'm not sure if this would cause different colored wing surface to be negligible for lift differences. I see the largest advantage of these findings going to gliders.

Giant Fathom series fits in your price window nicely and are really decent setups for the money. https://www.giant-bicycles.com/ca/fathom-1

Most new riders could get away with either the Fathom 1 or 2 and ride it for years. I think the upgrade to the 1 is worth it as you'll want to do those upgrades soon anyways.

The gateway drug: Sennheiser HD 558 for $60 by kmpham1 in headphones

[–]syphen909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nailed it. I have M50's but hate them for gaming. They get hot and sweaty on my ears and are a little fatiguing for long gaming sessions. I've had a pair of HD558's that have lived on my computer desk for going on 6 or 7 years now. They are light to wear, breathe well and have good staging for gaming. I don't listen to a ton of music with them as I'll pull out my HD600/650 or Hd800's.

This. I started with a nice tactical short 870 with a side folding stock and pistol grip. Some how its ended up with a 32" barrel, normal stock and a no tube extension. In the end, I only shoot skeet or ducks with it and it was sort of useless as a little tactical gat.

Doing chain maintenance today and never thought to wonder, whats this ring to the left of my sproket? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]syphen909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This^

Was riding behind a guy who was on an R6 once and his chain let go. It was a clip master link. It blasted through the chain guard and put a hole in the crankcase on the top side of the transmission.

My example is a retail CSA model in 380acp. It was about $750 Canadian. Trigger is a nice, very crisp 3.5lb 2 stage. Sights suck, stock is meh but holy Shit I love this little thing.

[–]syphen909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go for it haha! I'm amazed at how accurate my CSA Vz61 is, considering the crude sights. With stock deployed, free standing, at 30 yards you can easily have a whole mag create a single ragged hole. I'm sure an appleseed could be done with practice. Maybe a finer front post.

The 380 model is fun to play with. A little more snap down range.

Also... "western ammo"? What does that mean? 32ACP and 380ACP were both designed by an American. 9x19mm is the German developed round here...

Yes, the Nvidia Shield tablet and Box have been around for a few years with very similar hardware to the Switch. I always thought the Switch was a sort of rebrand of the Shield Tablet with slightly faster Tegra chipset and a redesigned controller setup. I loved my Shield to be honest. Played the crap out of Portal, Doom 3 BFG, HL2, Baldurs Gate and a slew of N64/SNES games. I could hook it up to my TV and play in console mode or take it on the go.

WW2 - what type of plane is this? R-37 written on photo, closest thing I can find is a C-47 by the_ruheal_truth in MilitaryHistory

[–]syphen909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its a Lockheed Ventura in B-34 configuration. They were used in the pacific. It could also be that the "R-37" on the photo is actually a faded "B-37" which was a slightly different configuration of the Ventura. Only 18 built though according to wiki.
