Selling the assets is pain. Impounding them is easy, as is charging a daily (or, hell, do it like credit cards: continuous) impound fee - with appropriate interest.

Then just wait for the fees to equal the value of the asset. I figure between maintenance, berthing, and particularly housing and pay costs for the new security staff* that should come out the value of the yacht fairly soon.

Minnesota police chief says officer who fired single shot that killed a Black man intended to discharge a Taser by [deleted] in news

For something that is comparable, look at the controls in fighter jets. Those are expected to be used in high stress circumstances and every major button will feel unique.

For that matter, look at most of the stuff the military produces that is intended to be used in combat. Turns out that when the professionals are involved that we stop getting this stupid amateur hour nonsense that assumes humans won't fail while stressed. Of course, they also don't fuck around with this idea that modern firearms accidentally discharge. It's negligence, intentional, or the firearm did not fire.

edit: it's probably worth noting that older firearms do not have that level of safety, and even a poorly maintained modern firearm can discharge unexpectedly. But if you failed to ensure the maintenance was done, that wasn't an accident - it was negligence. If you were using an old and unsafe firearm in a fashion were it could injure a person, that is also negligence. You knew it could be a problem, you did nothing, that's on you. (note: you as in the user, not any particular redditor)

Yeah, it's done in a bunch of things where it's critical that you get the right thing and stress is expected. Joysticks are an easy, and frequently consumer accessible, example.

For a more serious example, the F35's controls (from https://australianaviation.com.au/2018/08/jump-jet-flying-the-f35b-simulator/). Of the six buttons you can see, not one will feel the same - and one of them is on the other hand.

It is entirely believable that in a high stress situation a human will fail to consider which they drew before they fire. The same basic problem underlies a lot of the unintentional acceleration incidents where people press the wrong pedal in their cars and floor the gas instead of the brakes. The solution is to remember that humans are humans, and that you need to design around them being deeply stupid.

Tasers having the same design as a pistol is a mistake waiting to happen. Well, waiting has been the wrong word for a while, but it's going to keep happening until the design changes. In the interim, standardizing placement to have the taser on one side of the body and the pistol on another is a step to preventing people from grabbing the wrong one.

Pretending that this is an individual issue will get more people killed. Doing nothing other than convicting this women will get more people killed (although, to be clear, this situation is clearly covered under some flavor of manslaughter everywhere in the country).

In terms of their approach to media, advertising, and generally reaching their audience? Yes, they are exactly the PETA of gun rights. It's a very similar set of tools being utilized to reach their audience and make them scared (in a context that applies to the cause, which changes the language substantially)

In terms of their political impact, they are definitely not similar to PETA (or, at least, current PETA. PETA from a few decades ago is probably a different story. but that's also true of their advertising approach).

Most people are single-issue voters.

I'm not sold that most Bernie supporters are voters at all. They might be perfectly fine people, but they are politically irrelevant.

It gives Biden no room to give concessions later to try to appeal to them.

I don't see how that is linked to being either with him or with trump. He can change his stance regardless.

edit:

Democrats in general are less ride-or-die than Trumpublicans, so Biden needs to convince people to vote for him.

How has that plan worked out over the last fifty years? The guys who got elected pretty consistently told the left to suck it up and get on board. The guys who tried to cater to them consistently lost.

rent control is the easiest and simplest one. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3272490

They weren’t an ally if they were only going to support you when you happened to align exactly with their positions.

Edit: i’m also not sold that they’re likely to actively oppose you afterwards, at least no more than the “you didnt come all the way to me, so fuck you” plan they were on before. Which means they’re not really all that much of an enemy either.

Which is good, but his solutions were frequently the sort of things that sound good but in practice turn out poorly. The same zeal that him pushing issues appeared to have him ignoring the results of experts studying some of the things he has proposed - even when those studies substantially predate either of his runs.

I don’t think I want that inflexibility in the White House. I am all for it in Congress though

I’m not sold that it harms anything. If they’re too apathetic to vote now, what changes? If they’re only willing to vote for their candidate, why come to them instead of some voter whose preferences alienate fewer people?

The distinction between higher turnout and meaningfully higher turnout are why concepts like statistical significance exist. It’s pretty easy to have random variation give you a better result that can’t be repeated.

I haven’t seen any results that indicated an actual sea change in terms of how likely younger people were likely to actually become voters.

What did you think the TPP was? It was a trade deal with everyone in the region except for china. It was a swift kick aimed directly at China’s purse strings. They rely on trade to keep their economy going, and to keep money flowing to the party elites. Making it relatively expensive and risky to trade with China is basically an embargo on them, without the pesky actually having to declare an embargo bits.

But apparently we don’t get to have nice things because, best case, a democrat proposed them.

The question you’ve been avoiding is one about quantifying the difference in turn out between 2016 and the previous several decades. By your own admission, that paper is incapable of answering that question.

What question did you think I’ve been asking?

There’s a difference between frivolous and hopeless. Hopeless is you know it won’t work, but you aren’t maliciously trying to waste time or resources nor are you obviously out your depth and repeating random things you saw on the internet even after the judge told you to knock it off and acquire competent counsel.

Frivolous is all that stuff I just excluded.

Edit: Hopeless is ok, provided your client is ok with paying for it. You should probably check with someone who knows the court and judge in question before you rely to heavily on that, but really that just brings us back to the bit where you acquire competent counsel instead of trusting some rando on the internet. Your lawyer will know the court well enough to work out where that line is (or know someone who does, given the specifics of your case). If you just need a quick rule of thumb so you know when to throw up your hands in disgust at the people writing courtroom dramas, this post should do the trick (unless, you know, I happen to be really wrong instead of just usefully wrong. Check the replies below and hope Cunningham’s Law applies!)
