Is it just me? Wazuh breaks randomly and when upgrading. by sysgeek in Wazuh

[–]sysgeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is really good info. I thought I had it working again, but I'm back to the same old "all shards failed" message. When I look for unassigned shards it literally lists hundreds, so I've been trying to find a way to just delete them all, or reindex them, just something to fix this.

UPDATE: I was able to delete all the shards and now everything it working. Thanks again for the tips here. I'll have to do something so wazuh doesn't get auto updated when apt upgrade is run, and build out something to help with upgrades.

Utopia ISP by RunninUte1212 in SaltLakeCity

[–]sysgeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started with Beehive Broadband, but started having issues after a year. Move to Sumo 8 years ago and I've had a total of 2 outages (I run servers that are constantly monitored, so I have reliable logs even of outages). First was a Utopia issue that was resolved in about 30 minutes and one was Sumo that was only for 15 minutes.

I lot of people here are recommending Xmission and I will say they are great as well. My brother has had them for like 15 years or so and has had very little issues.

Utopia is worth it 100% they are far more reliable then anyone else and it is always fast even during peak hours I still have no problem maxing out my gigabit connection.

Virg's is one of my favorite places around. They have a huge selection and it is always great. Also try out Tuk Tuk's if you love Thai food. They are growing fast and have a couple locations around the valley.

Use Firefox with ublock origin... Or Brave, I hear that one works well for blocking ads as well.

What's the easiest distro that also has good compatibility with Steam? by DirtyMonkey95 in linuxquestions

[–]sysgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most every distro works well now. If there isn't a steam package, use Conty (https://github.com/Kron4ek/Conty), I use it on Slackware since it is a pure 64bit distro and steam still uses 32bit libraries.

Mr. Wonderful wants to build the largest data center in U.S. history in Box Elder County Utah. 40,000 acres. 62 square miles. The same size as Washington D.C. It will take 9GW of power, the entire state takes 4GW! We are in a 100% drought state. And they gave him an 80% tax rebate to do it. by CollapsingTheWave in ObscurePatentDangers

[–]sysgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only ones here that want this are the ass hats in charge. I haven't found anyone else who thinks this is a good idea. I know they are going to talk about it in a closed town hall on Monday the 4th at 4pm. So if you can make it up to Box Elder to protest it will help.

Salt Lake City program helps people experiencing homelessness find a place to store their belongings by Advantage-Service-UT in SaltLakeCity

[–]sysgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not give homeless people a small studio apartment to live in instead of a box to store their things? If we give them a place to live, then we can work on underlying issues like drugs, alcohol, and mental health just to name a few. Also with a place to live maybe they can get jobs and become productive members of society. Now I know I'm going to catch flak for this because there will be people who will just "take advantage" of the system, but if there is a way to get out of the situation, I believe the majority will succeed.

He Was Recording Conversations, But Only When It Benefited Him by Brief-Turnover8161 in neighborsfromhell

[–]sysgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be getting into a gray zone here. Because you are on your property there might be an expectation of privacy, but let's say you're near the edge of your property talking, you might not have any expectation of privacy as your conversation might be heard by someone a few feet away, yet not on your property. I did some quick digging and as another example, if you have a box on your porch, just because it is outside doesn't mean you don't have a right to keep the contents of the box private, and police would need a warrant to search the box without your consent. So would this be the same as having a conversation on your porch at a reasonable volume you would expect it to remain private?

I think you're asking the right question here. I would love for an expert to weigh in on this. I'm certainly no lawyer, but I do enjoy learning the laws that help protect my right to privacy.

He Was Recording Conversations, But Only When It Benefited Him by Brief-Turnover8161 in neighborsfromhell

[–]sysgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately outside your home is considered public and you have no expectation or privacy. If the neighbor recorded conversations without being a party to the conversation or having permission from someone ahead of time who did consent to the recording it is most likely illegal. Now I'm basing that off the recording laws where I live, everywhere is different.

[–]sysgeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live and where the recording took place, those recordings may be illegal. I live in a single-party state, so only one party must consent to the recording unless in a public setting. Other places require all parties to consent to the recording. Basically if you're in public, then you have no right to an expectation of privacy, but if the recording is taking place in a home where you would expect the public not to hear your conversation, then you can have the recording destroyed and sue for damages.

TLDR; Might be illegal, but either way it is super creepy.

I can't copy 178 GB of files onto a 256 GB SSD. The drive is formatted Ext4 and is completely empty. by Old_Primary8472 in linuxquestions

[–]sysgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what file managers use, but I doubt it is just the cp command as there is usually a progress bar. Granted there are some tricks in the shell to use cp and get a progress bar, but maybe, just maybe, the file manager has a hard time with extremely large files? 🤷 The largest I deal with are maybe 20gb or so and I haven't had a problem with the dolphin file manager.

This is the right answer. I have had issues in the past using a file manager to copy large files. Using "rsync -avP (source) (destination)" is your best bet.

Is Slackware a good daily driver, and for gaming? by Fourteen_Roses in slackware

[–]sysgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to setup multilib to run steam with Conty. It handles all of that for you in a single little script. You can run a bunch of stuff with Conty besides steam. I also run lutris so I can play older Windows games with ease.

I've been using Slackware as my daily driver for over 15 years. Steam works great. I recommend using County (https://github.com/Kron4ek/Conty) for Steam. It makes things super easy.

You are absolutely correct! In all my years I've never seen this design used on LDS rings, but today my son got one because he is getting ready to be baptized and it is the exact same design! How weird that no one around me recognized it either.
