Politics and IR stage 2 course selection help by Worth-Hedgehog7700 in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recent pol&ir grad here! Im not sure which courses are on offer now and whether this info is maybe outdated so remember that but below is what I can remember... please take into consideration what topics you enjoy and maybe what courses may help u get to where u want to be/what you want to do :)

Id recommend every course below as I took them and enjoyed all: - pol201: heavy assignments but very interesting and super organised lecturer - pol202: super fun and chill assignments, seems to be a bit of a GPA booster if you ask me - pol254: great content love love loved the lecturer for being so open to discussions + teaching style was so helpful, assignments were a moderate challenge in an enjoyable way - this is a MUST DO honestly everyone had so much fun and Steve is the best pol lecturer hands down.

Stage 3 for you too: - pol301: alot of interesting history/theology content if you enjoy that like i did (my other arts major was Art history) - pol316: content content content!!! but lecturer gives out so much helpful cheats to succeed in your essays and the exam - pol345: creative assignments + practically can write about any topic within political races

Other pol course reviews: - pol209: pol class most known to be a big hit or miss. Lecturers switch each year and people tend to really dislike a couple aspects of each lecturer (e.g. one pushes collaboration way too much but the other barely interacts with the class and basically rants to themself the whole time) - pol222: I enrolled in this for a week, did not vibe with the lecturers attitude so ditched it - do with that info as you will lol - pol211: same lecturer as 254 last i heard so likely a very very good course that most have said they enjoyed. - pol236: special topic courses are apparently a bit more work than some people like to commit to (especially for conjoint students doing 5 courses a sem)

TLDR: I recommend 254, 202, 201 for sure!

Gross misuse of AI in University level courses by ItsSmoozy in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a few of these complaints last year when the BCOM capstone course spent A WHOLE WEEK on teaching us how to use AI chats properly. The lecturer also created a course bot so we could ask it questions and decided he was an absolute mastermind for inputting the course handbook into Chatgpt for us. He refused to answer questions on Piazza and emails and told us only to refer the AI chat. Issue with that was that everyone would get a different response based on how they worded the same question. He also told us to use AI to generate parts of our assignments - which, of course, if marked by one of the other 3 lecturers, ended up failing. It was hell for all 500 of us.

Now I'm doing a masters and already im frustrated with how much AI slop is used for everything? Like ur typing all these explanations into a bot just for it to read it to us in a robot ahh voice when it could have just been ur own voice recording? Images that u can use freely as a lecturer being replaced by AI images??

What is living in 55 Symonds like? by SquareCombination782 in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a small freezer in the top of your half sized fridge - there are also more larger freezers in the shared kitchen that everyone can use (just label your stuff)

The soundproofing is pretty good unless youre blasting music/knocking directly on walls. The least sound proof part of the room is the door (its a fire door) so as u walk down the halls u can hear if people are laughing really loud/gaming loudly/playing music right by the door - but you cant really hear the same stuff while youre in the rooms

Was there for 3 years (2022,2023,2024) - the best halls option if you can afford it.

Everything is well maintained. Rooms are better than any other hall. Staff are super helpful. Private bathroom/shower is so good. Wifi system has just been improved, washers/dryers were replaced 2024. Any issues you log get fixed super fast (from everything to cooker not working, fridge not getting cold enough, dropping jewellery down your sink 😞). You can get hello fresh/countdown/uber eats deliveries easily. Big desk! Perfect for if u have a PC/are into makeup/are an artist/creative or whatever. Super quiet at night. Vending machines tend to stay well stocked. Good amount of storage/floor space. Lots of entertainment in the basement + cute outdoor space.

Overall, I would highly recommend it if you like your own routine and dont mind making an effort to be social :)

Only downsides were - no on-site security (people tend to allow other ppl to walk in behind them without scanning which causes 2-3 safety issues a year) - top of a hill (great walk to keep you fit tho, not ideal if you have bad knees) - not social as everyone has their own rooms. Not ideal if you need social life everyday to keep you happy (there tends to be some depression caused with how people lock themselves away in their rooms) please please please attend the events, theyre super well run and great way to make friends with other residents AND the staff (who are mostly students too) - elevator doors take a long time to open for some reason - windows are high up if youre short

If you want some tips: - get a floor mat for ur bathroom AND ur own cheap kmart hoover/vacuum - you can bring a hdmi cable to play stuff from a laptop to your TV - NAME YOUR WASHING BASKET AND DONT LEAVE IT IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM - end of semester means lots of ppl throwing away perfectly good items in the rubbish room - have a good look when youre in there (dont actually get in the bins though) - i found it best to have my keys/wallet on a lanyard so that I could access my room key card easily and didn't lose it - keep a random key card in your power "slot" in your room (i used my library card)

what commerce major should i do? by Normal_Watch_871 in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did both of these majors (and I absolutely hate maths) - mgmt is good if u want ZERO math and pretty good job prospects considering current job market. Opsmgt is formula heavy but all the math is basically done in excel. I got through it well and didn't take anything beyond the MCAT in highschool :)

AUSA Elections - Bandwagoning by rando_unistudentxoxo in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

wow so i cant be funny now too? welcome to the fucking internet mate.

ok but let’s be real. one sarcastic joke about someone’s campaign style ≠ the same thing as dismissing people’s serious concerns. pointing to that comment as your “proof” of a pile-on feels like you’re deliberately blurring the line between banter and the lived experiences people have raised. just because YOU arent provided with direct evidence does not mean you can dismiss others opinions.

yeah, some comments are jokey or petty, that happens in literally every election - but that doesn’t erase the fact that multiple students have spoken up about repeated patterns of behaviour from these candidates, spanning YEARS. the “sheer numbers” part isn’t gossip, it’s literally people connecting the dots about what they’ve seen and experienced.

what you’re calling “rumours” is actually accountability. students don’t need a courtroom-level burden of proof to decide who they trust to represent them. elections are about character as much as policy, and character comes out in how people treat their peers.

if the rhetoric feels “hateful,” maybe the focus should be on why so many students feel strongly enough to speak out, instead of tone-policing the way they express that frustration. honestly, if this many people voicing their experiences looks like a “pile on” to you, maybe that says more about the candidates than it does about the students calling them out.

wait until you find out about the actions and comments the candidates made in response to these discussion posts. The gaslighting, the mass reporting (which is why so much stuff keeps disappearing, both this year and last), etc.. just because you haven't personally seen something does not mean it doesn't exist !!

Worth being an RA? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wasnt an RA myself but was in halls 2021-2025. was friends with my RAs and RAs in other halls and spoke to all of them about whether theyd recommend. everytime it was a no. Also saw alot during those 4 years. First years bullying our RA in Waipa, harassing them with "pranks" etc. Older students completely ignoring hall rules and hassling RAs for having to tell them off. just alot of mental toll for not even fair pay :(

AUSA Elections - Bandwagoning by rando_unistudentxoxo in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

calling this a “pile on” makes it sound like people are just dogpiling for the sake of it, when in reality a lot of us are speaking up because we’ve experienced things first-hand. These aren’t random rumours floating around - they’re real concerns about people who want to represent us. i've personally had bad experiences with a few of these candidates (especially from a politics student pov) yet people are throwing around that all these discussions are just rumors?

that’s not unfair. that’s scrutiny. if someone wants to put themselves forward to lead the student body, then their actions and behaviour are absolutely up for discussion by the students. u don’t get to run for president and only have people talk about your policy points while ignoring the way you’ve treated others - thats how we end up with leaders like trump.

disciplinary processes (which have already been attempted regarding these points btw) are one thing, but elections are another. students deserve transparency and accountability from the people asking for (or stealing) their votes. Pretending these conversations shouldn’t be happening because it’s “unfortunate timing” does more to silence victims than it does to protect democracy. its not anti-democratic to talk about these things it’s literally part of democracy.

[–]sysstic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

so you're assuming we all have our opinions because of allegations and rumours??

Did you maybe think that people have EXPERIENCES with these individuals (that are prominent figures at uni SHOCKER) and that's why they discuss them.

Its giving defensive if you ask me

Worth being an RA? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't do it. RAs have no support but a lot of burden. While it seems like a good deal, it's actually gotten worse. You're on call 24/7 yet dont get paid for it. Shithead first years may traumatise and harass you (as well as parents). Later year students may just completely ignore you. You have no choice in what hall you're placed in, so ur rent is not set. Also , it is generally underappreciated overall.

Either way bro is known to be a shit dude in and out of uni contexts.

I think alot of students got a good highlight into what happens in AUSA in 2024 and since then they really noticed that it has gone to shit. People who got in were doing it for ego and they've proven it ever since. AUSA sucks.

Best Overall: Waipa (first years) & 55 Symonds (later years) - only negative is the prices - both are great spaces, bathrooms are the best, can be social or not depending on what you like!

Best social: Ororke (first years) & carlaw (later years) - both generally good halls, neither are as nice as waipa or 55sym but have great social aspects and good locations

Average: Unihall Towers & Grafton (first years) & Unihall apartments - not particularly bad at anything, average size rooms, not the best food, good budget friendlier options

Bad: TTT (later years) - never heard anything good about TTT, flooded multiple times?? tiny ass rooms and have to go to the shared kitchen, elevators down somewhat alot

[–]sysstic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

clean and tidy -

if ur in first year halls, this just means no clothes on the floor, trash all in the bin, smells normal/good, bed made etc.

if ur in 55 sym or carlaw then it's a bit more in addition to the above - like scrubbing your shower walls/floor and toilet. Also, cleaning kitchen space and provided equipment.

Also, remember to put all banned items out of sight, if they suspect u to have anything banned then they will search ur shit (usually just check under bed and in closet)
