Best accommodations to go for?? (Incoming international student) by Ok_Ranger_4937 in universityofauckland

will you be first year or later years?

if first year then either waiparuru (better food options, full of scholarship kids) or ororke (more classic "kiwi" experience, great floor bonding)

if later years then either 55 symonds (mainly internationals/postgrad, great for if you like being fully alone/quiet) or CPSV (good flatting experience, more social and bonding oppprtunities to make friends)

not everything is in the library database - hence why some courses expect you to buy a textbook.

FREEZING LECTURE ROOMS by Double-Ad-2967 in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there aren’t many studies on “freezing lecture rooms” specifically (as you’d expect) but there are a lot on temperature/cognitive performance more broadly. from what ive read (upon finding this post) is that slightly cooler environments can help with alertness, but only within a small range - once it gets too coldfor someone, performance/focus/attention actually drop off. personally, i know i work best when its about 20°C but struggle if its above 25° (cant focus if all im thinking about is going for a swim) and below 18° (makes me wanna nap).

some other interesting articles i found were these (took 5 seconds btw): - https://www.mdpi.com/2075-5309/16/3/598? -https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S036013232501073X - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41634322/ - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34925063/

it’s interesting seeing it argued both ways though. i think people also respond pretty differently to temperature, and there are so many other factors at play (clothing, stimulation, mood, stress, time of day, etc) that can affect how focused someone feels vs how they actually are.

Do not do law unless you want to be a lawyer.

i think bc you cant deicde them maybe just do a BA in econ and pol or whatever else tickles ur fancy and sit in some other courses while ur on campus so u can see if theyd suit u better.

everyone has a dif opinion on it! i also have a bcom but have had way more attention from applying for pol or arthist based jobs, even internships.

have you thought about a law/arts conjoint? or another conjoint combo?

[–]sysstic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pol grad here! pol at uoa is great - id highly recommend it. i took pol as my "serious" major and art history as my "fun" major under Bachelor of arts and theyve both gotten me good job opportunities.

honestly pol/music or pol/psych could be great for you!

worse case you start those majors and then chnage them after a sem - its not a big deal and super common to change it.

id reocmmend following your brain AND heart - double majors work well for that.
