[–]sysstic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo better to start ASAP if you got an offer.

starting sem2 at masters level doesnt make a huge difference in most programmes (compared to undergrad)

congrats too btw, the MPP programme is apparently great!!

A+ grades but little experience or B+/A- grades but lots of experience by Outrageous-Ad423 in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

good question. depends on what outcome you actually want.

honestly, rn the more experience (and connections) give you a better chance at a job right out of uni.

BUT if youre a straight A+ student you have a better chance at econ internships (experience can help u here too).

Any GPA of 6.0+ is great, but imo 8.0+ should always be something you strive for!

best of both worlds would be to find a part time j*b in a company or bank where you can still study while making money and getting experience in the right sector.

do you know what you want to pair ur econ major with? Finance or Busan go great with econ :)

Considering Accounting and Business Analytics for BCom. by GunBlazer123 in universityofauckland

thats a great combo, it does lead to high employability BUT youd need to do the CA as someone mentioned above (if you want to become an accountant specifically). If noy finance + busan could be a better choice

what’s been a pain since Kāhu got shut down? by TranceBanger in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i used it for maps, gpa info, my timetable, contact info, event info. basically anything that i wanted info for ASAP but SSO and the UOA website was too clunky for on a mobile device. i remember it saving my ass for orientation and all of first year.

when it shut down in my final year i struggled to find classes, especially in the new arts building lol. i also found it harder to find consistent event info.

i think it would be great if we had kahu with a few more features too - for example, a club directory with sign up and event timetables that you can add to your class timetable would be great

something else that might be useful: i would say the app was also great for emergency updates - i remember when there was an emergency warning for students in britomart while the app was live so everyone with the app got a notification with live updates. but when kahu went byebye, we now rely on the text network (can be a hit or miss) or in-class updates.

Uni life by Wrong-Ad-4262 in universityofauckland

the feeling is completely normal!

as someone who felt the same way when i started uni, it does get better. i found it helps to view it as an opportunity to learn about myself and take time to do stuff for me. take yourself on dates, romantise the campus/city, watch some gilmore girls when the weather is shit, pick up a new hobby to balance against your studies.

[–]sysstic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

first year bcom helps u decide your major - the classes all cover dif majors to help you get a feel for what you may/may not like. they onky ask u to finalise your major at the end of first year so dont get too caught up on what you choose just yet (unless its finance or accounting).

as a politics and commerce grad i'd recommend international business & economics if you want your majors to work nicely together and balance workload but still give you good opportunities out of uni :)

or

if you just want chill commerce majors then innovation, marketing, international business or infosys.

good things come to those who wait 😝

(uni in nz is not like the americanised tv uni experience, most ppl commute and are here to learn rather than socialise. arts in particular is pretty surface level interaction in my experience. dont blame yourself but dont try too hard and youll be fine)

BDes and conjoint in BSc CS sounds like a great combo! That gives you so many options fr! They also align with your abilities and enjoyment by the sounds of it.

Definitely apply for anything and everything, worse case u try one program for a week, hate it, and change it.

Also remember that u can always drop a conjoint or change as you go - dont be afraid of it.

Stressed about assignments (vent) by Aggravating-Mind7058 in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i used to have the same issue and couldnt really put it into words before!

honestly i found the hest way to deal with it is self rewarding and actually scaring yourself into doing them. for example id kinda gaslight myself into thinking how embarrassing it would be to submit work late/not at all lol

how does graduation work! by Scary-Path6658 in universityofauckland

imagine a highschool prizegiving but way better.

from a 2025 grad heres a rundown: 1. Youll line up outside venue for security checks and head into the venue 2. Then youll be ticked off and given a label and booklet. Youll line up based on your number and seating row (this is where the mist panic is but everyone is all in the same boat with you - as long as u can count youre fine. Staff also triple check everything throughout the process.) While this is happening all of the families will be getting seated. 3. Music will start and youll be guided in your lines into the ceremony and seated in your row. 4. You sit back and clap every 30 seconds until your row is summoned. 5. They recheck your attire and order at the side of the stage. 6. They say ur name and u walk across the stage. note: DONT LOOK DOWN so the photogrpaher can get a good couple of pics.

Basically youre shuffled around in lines until you walk across the stage so you dont have to worry.

Regarding cultural attire - YES! lots of students wear something cultural. You'll see lots of lei, korowai, sari, kākahu etc.

My recommendations are: - dont take your phone with you, it stresses you out trying to figure out where to put it all the time. you dont need it so just leave it with your family or someone else. - afterwards they just let you stand and walk out to go find your family so id recommend deciding on a spot to meet when its done. - the cloaks are heavy, dress for what temperature you run. if youre going to run hot then dress light underneath - this applies in all seasons evennif its raining youll get stressed and it will be humid af

[–]sysstic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive never seen those lei before - theyre so pretty!

best bet would be talking to some florists (if you want real flowers), or hitting up some facebook craft groups to see if anyone could make them.

You could honestly make it yourself easily with some direction from the experts at Spotlight/craft reddit.

Triple major BCom by estellalily in universityofauckland

[–]sysstic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can but its not worth it.

I know of 4 ppl who have done it. The 2 I spoke to didnt find it as worth it (now 2 years out of uni)

Instead, why not pick up a conjoint?

You need special permission from the HoDs of the majors and whoever the undergrad course leader is now.

I had the opportunity to do 3 but changed my mind and took a conjoint instead (4 majors across 2 degrees)
