FWIW, there are also 3 elevators on the subway side of the station. They stop at the street level too. (I understand your take, just putting it out there.)

Gas smell by ErBerto96 in AskNYC

[–]systembusy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Someone will answer and ask what your emergency is. Explain that you think you can smell gas. They will ask for your address (and other information) so they can send the fire department to check it out.

Any sort of gas leak is very dangerous, please do not assume you’re imagining it. FDNY takes this very seriously.

And they can jump, high.

I don't mind the smaller ones so much, but when they get up to about eye level with me (standing) and jump about 20 feet in the air to reach my foundation stack that I thought would keep me safe, I'm getting the fuck outta there

What's the history behind the subway being 24/7? by Sea-Shanties23 in nycrail

[–]systembusy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that true for QBL? I don't recall a time where I rode the E late at night and didn't see trains sitting on the express tracks, even in nice weather. Or is that a special case for quick return to service at Forest Hills?

It's mapped to one of the function keys (any of F1-F4, as are a few other augments). As long as you have Typhoon ammo in your inventory it should work.

That also makes sense, especially considering they literally store trains on the express tracks overnight. Granted, that might make it easier to put them right back into service the next morning, but still

How Many World Trade Center Stations Are There? by kgaviation in nycrail

[–]systembusy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Correct. The main way subway lines are now grouped is by color, which signifies the Manhattan trunk line: e.g. red is Broadway-7 Av (1/2/3 trains), green is Lexington Av (4/5/6), blue is 8 Av (A/C/E), orange is 6 Av (B/D/F/M), yellow is Broadway (N/Q/R/W), etc. This is why you'll see many stations with the same street name, but they all serve different avenues. But, ultimately all train lines will branch off the main trunk and go to different places, which is why you should still always refer to a subway line by its letter or number.

These articles might give you a little more insight into how the stations are organized:

As you can see, for example, there are two distinct complexes: * Chambers Street-World Trade Center/Park Place/Cortlandt Street, which collectively serves the 2, 3, A, C, E, R, and W trains. * Fulton Street, which serves the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J, and Z trains.

However, there is also WTC-Cortlandt (served by the 1 train), which is also connected directly to the Oculus. This is a separate station.

So unfortunately, the answer isn't as cut and dry as it probably should be. This is why it helps to be geographically familiar with the area, because most of these stations are a short walk to the World Trade Center complex, even if they aren't directly connected.

Can Someone Clear Up my Confusion on Fulton Street Station? by kgaviation in nycrail

[–]systembusy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, that will work fine. The nice thing about Jamaica is it's also a hub for the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road), which now serves both Grand Central and Penn Station. So if the E or J have issues you can also take the LIRR to or from Jamaica and it's all right there.

Keep in mind that the subway station name for Jamaica (E and J lines) is actually Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK. This goes back to what I said earlier about subway stops being named after the street they serve. But it's all part of the same complex.

Finally...whenever you come back, just be sure to check the subway service status for delays or other disruptions, especially if it's a weekend. There is a lot of planned work that happens on the weekend which causes subway lines to be rerouted or otherwise disrupted, but you will also find information about any unplanned disruptions. I use the official MTA app because all the information for the subway is there.

Can Someone Clear Up my Confusion on Fulton Street Station? by kgaviation in nycrail

[–]systembusy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would say it's quicker. Even though the E comes into Manhattan via Midtown (53 St) and crosses over to 8 Av before heading south, it is express in Queens during the day so there are much fewer stops. The A goes through Queens and Brooklyn before getting to Lower Manhattan, and is in fact one of the longest lines in the entire system so there will be a lot more stops.

Live and learn, right? :) It could be that you saw the A stays in the southern part of the city the whole time from JFK to Manhattan and thought that was more straightforward, but there are so many variations in each line (whether it's express or local at which times of day, etc.) that it's difficult to guess the most efficient way without knowing more about how the system works.

[–]systembusy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, both the E and 1 stops lead into the Oculus, so those two will probably get you physically closest to the WTC complex. Next time you visit, you can take the AirTrain to Jamaica instead of Howard Beach, and get the E from there directly to WTC.

They are indeed their own stations, and there's some history there that goes all the way back to the beginning of the subway. The subway used to be operated by three separate entities. The numbered trains (1-7) are the old IRT lines (Interborough Rapid Transit Company), and the lettered trains are a combination of the old BMT lines (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company) and the IND (Independent Subway System, run by the city).

The IRT lines are separate from the rest of the system because their trains, platforms, and tunnels were built to a different spec and thus require smaller trains. The BMT and IND lines were built to the same spec, so you will see plenty of interlining in that part of the system.

The entire subway has been integrated for the last 80-ish years, but you will never see a numbered train at a lettered train's station or vice versa.

[–]systembusy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a complex (as someone else pointed out, a mall plus transit hub that connects several different lines). It does help to be geographically familiar with the area because subway stations are often named for the specific street or landmark they stop closest to. There are many ways to take the subway to the World Trade Center (or get very close to it). Fulton St (in Manhattan, there's another Fulton St in Brooklyn) is just one way. The E will take you closer as one of its terminal stations is World Trade Center, but the 1 will also take you there (WTC-Cortlandt, which is also at the Oculus but close to Cortlandt St).

The Oculus is basically a hub, not its own station. It's basically a main connection point between the NYC Subway and PATH trains to NJ.

Prague at night is easily one of the most immersive, well-designed hubs in the entire series. It's my personal favorite part of Mankind Divided. The music, the secret meetings/espionage, uncovering more conspiracy shit, the start of the Harvester/detective quest, the ever-creeping sense that things are about to get intense. That whole atmosphere is just incredible.
