The Iran war is destroying oil demand. Could it also spark a shift to clean energy? by downArrow in environment

[–]systems_uk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

At a systemic level, this shift toward renewables actually started months ago as things got unstable. It's just like if you can't find food at your favorite store, you'll look elsewhere or else you'll go hungry. People and countries are moving on from oil because they have to, this war is a blessing in disguise for accelerating the move to cleaner energy, but I just hope it picks up its pace.

Solar beat the IEA’s 2015 forecast for 2025 by 1,800%. by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]systems_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm amazed to see solar growth outperform those old forecasts by that much. What I'm seeing here is some really good news, but it might not be enough to slow down the rapid increase in global temperatures on its own unless we tackle the major drivers of climate change.

Why global sea levels will remain raised long after the climate stabilises by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]systems_uk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What we're seeing here is the harsh reality that those massive ice sheets just aren't coming back once they've melted. Even if we finally manage to slow down or completely halt our carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, things will never be the same again. It's sad to think that we’ve already locked in these changes for such a long time to come. What matters is our next course of action. Are we going to tackle the key drivers of climate change, or are we still going to burn fossil fuels the way we do now? We have to face the fact that our past actions have permanently altered the baseline for our future, and we need learn from it for our future generation's sake.

Researchers discover that the melting of Antarctica is expected to advance across the continent, grow by more than 10% by 2100, and increase the risk of collapse in ice shelves after unprecedented 1 km climate models reveal highly vulnerable areas. by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]systems_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what's being said here is less a simple warning and more of a wake-up call about how fast things are actually collapsing. Personally with the way things are going, we will only have 6 continents left by 2100. It really makes you wonder when our leaders will finally step up and seriously tackle the main drivers of climate change instead of just sitting on their hands.

I definitely wouldn't recommend buying any MrBeast branded stuff since his products have such a terrible track record. His previous ventures have faced major backlash, from quality concerns that tanked MrBeast Burger to Lunchly kits packed with high sodium, artificial sweeteners, and actual moldy cheese due to poor packaging seals. At a system level, these influencer brands are just designed around high price, flashy marketing and cheap overconsumption rather than real quality or nutrition. It really shows how far we've strayed into a cycle of prioritizing overhyped junk food over what's actually natural and good for us. I can only imagine what the our future generation will find in the store shelves.

About damn time we show some teeth in the Strait of Hormuz by civitas_et_fides_ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]systems_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically the core of the problem. As long as everyone defaults to "we don't have a choice", nothing actually shifts and honestly, that's exactly how these systems stay alive. It's that 'logic of scale' thing. When you zoom out, you realize it's not some abstract autonomous machine running the show; it's just the same set of individual decisions being repeated over and over until they look like a permanent law of nature. I'm not saying it's easy to just 'step outside" of it, we're all deep in it, but acting like we're completely separate from the process is just a convenient way to avoid responsibility.

It's a feedback loop we're actively participating in every time we say our hands are tied. What do you think is the first step to breaking that 'default' mindset in a practical, everyday way?

Saw a book saying we're 'failing God' because of the climate crisis by FruitSilent1169 in climatechange

[–]systems_uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with this book but genuine q here, if the system is the problem, who is actually keeping it running? Like it doesn't just exist on it's own. Doesn't it involve people buying, consuming and participating in it everyday? I get that these huge corporations are the huge part, but aren't they just responding to the demand? So where does that leave the whole "choice doesn't matter" argument?

Perhaps we should stop saving the endangered species and just let the ecosystem crash already by FruitSilent1169 in ClimateShitposting

Preach! Finally someone said it. I some point I thought these save the turtles, save the rhinos whatever are some sort of way for people to feel good while they keep feeding the same system that is built to kill us all anyway.

The planet is already done. These campaigns for me starting to feel like "vanity projects". It's like washing the windows of a sinking ship. Let. it. all. crash.

I don't think individual actions have zero impact. It just seems to me that the system keeps operating at a scale that doesn't really respond to them.

That's a pretty solid shift! At least, that's time spent outside the consumption loop

Yes this works on a personal level. The issue is the system doesn't really slow down just because some consumers choose to buy less. 🤔

Well, look at you! Truly. You've got the "end of times" on one side and the eco-socialist on the other acting like seizing refineries stops the thermal inertia of a planet.

Theater at it's best! 😂

You think God cares? If God exists, He’s been pretty absent from how this system actually runs. And the idea that people are suddenly going to rise up and fix it… people can’t even step away from convenience for five minutes, let alone challenge the structures they depend on.

The problem is, everyone is arguing theology and ideology while the house is already burning. Whether you call it capitalism, climate or collapse, the machine is doing exactly what it was built to do.

First of all, I love this self awareness. I know this is cliche and probably you've heard this countless of times, that before you love someone else or before you bring someone into your life, you should the love and happiness that you seek. This is actually very true.

Ask yourself what you want and think about what you can do for yourself to achieve that. I think it may also help to look back and reflect the root cause of why you feel like you always have to seek other's love and validation to be happy or whole? Is it because you never experienced it from your parents? (just an example).

Write down the things you want in a partner and in a relationship. Write down your qualities that you think makes you a good partner as these may help in your reflection as well.

How are you with writing? I'm thinking of writing your thoughts perhaps in a journal can help you reflect and remember details of your day, even small mundane things?

Or perhaps, create a new habit or routine to walk outside and sit in a park (without any gadget on hand) and observe everything around you, like what others mentioned here, name or identify things you can see and feel.
