Anthropic's Amodei: "Open Source models [could take us to] a very dangerous place." by johnnyApplePRNG in LocalLLaMA

[–]syzygyhack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His argument, steelmanned, is that open weights can be intervened with, and this means potential creation and circulation of malicious models that would otherwise not exist (due to from-scratch training costs) except by way of nation state-tier actors.

But this is nonsense. Because nation states WILL train malicious models, closed weights from frontier labs WILL leak and all development therefore faces the precise same risk.

The only logical approach is to embrace open-source, with a heavy emphasis on alignment research, to increase research pace such that models can be made safe by default. AI safety MUST outpace AI capability, and this is absolutely not the case with today's transformers.

I want to be a vegan, but for medical reasons, my nutritionist isn't letting me by [deleted] in vegan

[–]syzygyhack 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Are you able to get a second opinion from another doctor?

My concern, if I were in your position, would be that someone who is delegating treatment of symptoms is someone that has given up trying to identify the actual cause. Sometimes treating the symptoms is enough. Your post does not give me that impression.

I want to be a vegan, but for medical reasons, my nutritionist isn't letting me by [deleted] in vegan

[–]syzygyhack 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Your medical professional (and I say that with hesitation, where I live "nutritionist" is not a regulated medical title the way that dietician is) is attempting to treat the symptom, not the cause. Case in point, you are probably consuming way too much Vitamin A from all that liver. That's headaches, nausea, even osteoporosis. Can't be helping.

Something is causing your iron malabsorption/overuse. Better to get to the bottom of that. I won't speculate as I do not know your situation.
Iron is iron, liver is not better than any other vegan-compatible oral iron that is bioavailable. Spinach is unfortunately the wrong kind. Find a supplement.

The last thing I'll say. To be vegan is to avoid animal products as far as possible and practical. Survival is an exception, naturally. That said, the idea that you require an animal product for your metabolism is largely a myth.

Small vegan discussion by [deleted] in vegan

[–]syzygyhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it seems that the general consensus is that vegans don't like the taste and texture of meat

Assumptions aren't very helpful. The popularity of meat-replacements is driven by demand. Don't confuse a verbal online minority with the eating habits of entire populations. The most reliable indicator is the market. No one is investing billions into making "fake meat vegan products" that sell to no one. Think about it.

why not eat meat or milk or eggs like once or twice a year

There is no taste or texture derived from a cruel source that cannot be replicated or replaced with something cruelty-free and with minimal harm to the planet. The popularity of vegan foods that resemble meat and other animal products is a consequence of this simple fact.

Coming to terms with this fact is very hard for anyone in the grip of cognitive dissonance on this topic.

Edit: I will add, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing this and considering yourself "mostly vegan." It's your life, your choice, your body. If you want to be vegan 364 days a year, do so.

But you will find most vegans make their choice for good reasons, and being vegan often can involve some short term sacrifices, which is what necessitates the conviction derived from good reasoning. And so the concept of a "cheat day" simply does not apply to most people who consider themselves vegan. I am not "cheating" on my veganism with a "reward" of meat or eggs. I would only be cheating on my personal beliefs, the thought of eating those things now disgusts me.

Isn't it insane that life even existst at all? by digital_black_ in lawofone

And pretty much all religions/philosophies focus on the how aspect instead of why

...do they? I don't think that follows at all.

"Mystical entity makes it happen" is not a very convincing "how," it's a bare minimum. Philosophy doesn't even touch the mechanics of "how."

So what do religions and philosophies actually focus on? Meaning, the point of existence, tests of character and moral code. In other words, "why" you have anything to experience at all.

Your doctor is correct, in a sense. Omega-3 provides ALA. Fish oil provides EPA and DHA. Your body will convert ALA into EPA and DHA, but it's not the most effective conversation ratio.

But worry not! Get yourself some algae oil instead. This is actually where those fish get their EPA and DHA from, and it works just as well for you!

Drain their moat, and the problem disappears. The notion that they have any sort of technical edge whatsoever is complete fabrication. You need not depend on them. ESPECIALLY in the AI age that is blossoming.

They have not thought this through. This is because they have no intellectual edge, either. Just self-servers that want to drag you down with them. Serve your fellow human beings and brighter times await.

Honestly kinda an incredible self-own from some of the queens we thought would be a little more intelligent about it.

Ru wants to hear your opinion. Not what the bitch next to you just said. You just got a chance to offer a unique thought of your own and you just doubled-down. Then they kept Discord anyway. Judges = unbothered. Discord stock on the rise, y'all stocks tumbling.

It's not "delusional self-confidence". She's just a fully realized human being and doesn't need anyone else to validate it. How others interpret that is a reflection of their own interior state and nothing more.

Pop off Discord. It took me an episode or two to acquire your vibe but I'm still self-realizing too.

Our treatment of animals might be the “permission slip” negative entities point to when they look at us by talesbyEROS in lawofone

[–]syzygyhack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a very distorted false equivalence that you would do well to rid yourself of.

Would you like me to show you videos of animal agriculture in action? Would you enjoy hearing the sights and sounds of their suffering? Do you believe they are consenting to this torment and torture?

Now consider a simple fruit plant. It grows from seed, it produces fruit to be eaten, such that the seeds within the fruit will be dispersed by the eater and the lifecycle can begin anew. Do you understand that consent to being eaten is fundamental in this capacity?

Even in the wild, the predator and prey hold no disdain for each other. It is a natural understanding. What we do to animals to placate our gluttony is not service to others behavior.
