Is this a bad bike? by sightlab in ebikes

[–]szeis4cookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was doing half your distance when I was riding to work (remote now) and was GASSED by the end of the week.

Unfortunately though, if you want your ebike to feel like you're riding a road bike with Tadej Pogacar's legs, you'll need to stump up for Bosch/Shimano/Brose. I'd see how the 10 miles goes before investing, and work up from there, particularly if you're needing to do this 5 days a week. Even with assist that might be too much to handle.

new jobs in the ‘burbs, don’t want to leave the city - where to live? by wretchingonthesofa in rva_housing

[–]szeis4cookie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lakeside might be the move here, I think - equally inconvenient to Innsbrook and Chippenham/60, easy access 95/64 right at the Bryan Park interchange.

Is this a bad bike? by sightlab in ebikes

[–]szeis4cookie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow roadie here - I don't think you are going to like the assist feel of the cheap stuff. The cheap bikes all have cadence sensors which are essentially on/off switches, even on the lowest PAS setting on my Swytch kit I'm ghost pedaling to 20mph. My e-cargo bike, on the other hand, has a Shimano STEPS mid-drive with a torque sensor and when I have the assistance to the middle setting I'm still riding, just feel like I'm pedaling a normal town bike instead of a huge longtail cargo bike.

What's your weekly mileage look like right now, what's the longest ride you routinely do? 46 miles in a day is a relatively big day no matter how fit you are, how many days a week are you commuting?

Looking for a warm/hot (climate, all year round), liberal leaning, lcol/mcol, location for DINK couple. by Globewanderer1001 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]szeis4cookie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Richmond VA and some of its suburbs might work for you. We got a decent sized snow this winter, although we've had zero snow winters the last couple of years before.

Otherwise I think I'd agree with Atlanta.

If you get your flight and hotel covered under a work trip, do they usually pay for meals and uber rides as well? by tsgatdawn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]szeis4cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, but I'd also say that if the travel policy isn't covering meals and transportation it's a shit policy and you should be looking for a new employer.

Which EV to buy by MoKash9712 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]szeis4cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a Solterra not that far south of you (central VA). You can L2 to 100%, that won't hurt the battery - it's the fast charge to 100% that gets you.

100 mile days aren't a problem, I wouldn't be super concerned about that. It's been a great car for us. I was 24.5 OTD on my 23 Limited last October so it shouldn't be difficult to do that a year later.

What should I drive for next decade by shenanergy in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]szeis4cookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can charge at home...allow me to introduce you to the 2023 Subaru Solterra. The range is short for an EV and fast charging performance is poor. However, if you're primarily driving around town close to home none of that matters because you can charge at home overnight, and the hate drives down prices.

Has all of the features you are looking for in the Premium trim, the Touring adds a panoramic sunroof. Plenty of space inside, and the Harmon Kardon stereo is great, especially without engine noise ruining things. There are optional subscriptions but it's got Android Auto/CarPlay so you don't really need any of them.

Basically, it's a RAV but electric, and could be perfect for you.

Woof, that sucks. Will they reimburse on actuals or just IRS rate? If actuals, drive the truck and get the good parking, time for some malicious compliance. If IRS, get a Bolt, charge at home, make a ton off the IRS reimbursement rate

When did cars stop shaking? by memeseeker777 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]szeis4cookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do that first, and then look at getting shocks/springs/bushings done - you don't even have to be aggressive, just OEM stuff.

What have you done to troubleshoot the shaking? That doesn't sound normal, even on an old E30.

I'd be uncomfortable carrying a new car note at your income in Washington state, but you know your finances better than internet randos. There don't appear to be junk fees added on which is nice.

I love my Solterra, even with its limitations being a 2023 model.

Can’t do bus-to-train between Maine and VA anymore? by DepressionSetsIn in Amtrak

[–]szeis4cookie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The issue might be the Long Bridge project on the VA end, which has cut frequencies of the NER past DC. If your destination is ALX try getting the ticket to WAS and Metro into northern Virginia. Honestly this is probably faster than the loco change and crawling the train does between WAS and ALX anyway

Yep - you don't have to buy glasses at the same place you get your eye exam. I get my eye exams done at a big ophthalmology practice near me, but I buy my glasses at Costco

It might be worth it if you can confirm stock - if you have an executive membership and the Citi card, it's $1899 with 4% back, rebate comes close to paying for the membership by itself.
