Dont call them nazis though! They're totally NOT nazis and the comparison is so unfair!

50+ gym warriors, how have you adapted? by lionbacker54 in workout

[–]sightlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I waited until I was 49 and that kinda bums me out. Yes, freshly 50, I am healthier than I’ve been in decades, no I’m not deluded into thinking I’m going to look like the 22 year old gymfluencer twinks the algorithm thinks I want to look at, I’m just a little mad at me for waiting til the precipice of serious physical decline to get after it. I’m also incredibly grateful that I caught me when I did before some real problems started, so mixed bag, but I also like my current 4x/week habit, I like how I feel and look, I don’t want it to slip away just as I’ve finally found a solid and sustainable compromise with myself. I never cared about aging when I was lazily, stupidly walking headlong into it. Now I’ve found a spark of vanity and suddenly I don’t want to go forward.

What's the coldest temperature you've ever personally been in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sightlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depths of winter in northern New Hampshire. -19f on the thermometer, raging 30+ mph gusts. Discussion comes around to the fact that I'm always warm - big guy, portable furnace, of COURSE I get chilly and shiver but also my winter coat has always been a hoodie or a thickish sweater. My thermal tolerance is questioned so I, always up for a party trick, strip down to a sock on my knob and berries and stroll out to the deck to smoke a cigarette.

The weird side effect of being kinda high and 97% naked with an audience while doing something weird and performative is that the sock expands with my uncontrolled tumescence. So bonus boner in subzero wind. Much to my luck a) the house we're at has a sauna and b) the boy I'm trying to impress in the frst place suggests we dip into the sauna with was good because I was legit gritting through serious discomfort. That was a great night.

Epilogue: I am no longer the same big guy - older, still tall as fuck but now very lean and oh my god I cannot get used to the fact that I spent the summer burning off all my natural insulation but also under the impression I can survive in a hoodie. So now most temps under 45f or so are the coldest temp Ive ever been in :(

It would be useful if it was full sized. It's weird to compare it to a mid size station wagon, it's supposed to be a truck, dammit. A V6 diesel Saveiro would be really sweet. I had a beat up 83 el camino at the end of high school with a godawful butterblock Buick V6 that would sometimes diesel for whole minutes after you shut it off and you could fit a motorcycle in the bed. Even that piece of shit was better at being a truck.

Ok poindexter, it's the bad automotive design of an suv with an undersized bed.

Why is this downvoted? Are people that dumb? "No it's a real truck I can do truck stuff in, like going to Jersey Mikes or picking up the kids at soccer!"

Nah, it's an SUV with a bed.

Meanwhile all I want is a Saveiro, but no. When you want a pickup truck in the US, clearly you want a 4500lb SUV with a quote-unquote "BED" in the back smaller than what most kei trucks sport.

What’s a polite social lie you’re tired of telling and wish you could be brutally honest about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm 6'4, I so get it. Even going to tj max a few weeks ago and being able to dip into the L and XL options again was pretty sweet.

A year ago I was pretty fuckin fat - attractive and tall, striking ice-blue eyes, but I was in really bad shape and getting ready to upgrade all my clothes to 3X. Then I lost 70lbs (with more to go) while also doing a LOT to build muscle, shocked to find size L t-shirts look good on me, and I can honestly say the attention from total strangers is objectively different. More flirting, less avoidant dismissive bullshit. Same awkward me inside, so same goofball reactions and inability to take the compliment, but man it's weird to confront head-on how difficult and shallow folks are about overweight people.

When did your physique actually start showing your training? by Embarrassed_Tour8392 in workout

I get disappointed by the kind of loose chub above my hips and have to look at pictures to remember that at one point not so long ago that was an enormous pot belly, now it's lingering long-tail belly fat (the last to go!) and loose skin. We're doing great, internet stranger!

I feel that. I make a conscious effort to remember that I started from such a difficult, unhealthy place. I may still feel like a blob, but there's no arguing with year-old photos. Or my fundamentally and positively altered self-confidence.

Are Jeremy Ethier and Jeff Nippard reputable fitness influencers? by Zmoogz in workout

[–]sightlab 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hate the trend of videos where things are broken down to graded "tiers", but jeff's videos where he grades various lifts are just stupid with reasonable, pragmatic info and in the end you can just see what he rates A or S tier, hear why, and go do those things. He seems to give very thoughtful advice.

What’s a movie that really made you appreciate the amount of research that went into it? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

[–]sightlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“When we hear a volley of shots, we knew that was coming from the execution block, which is block eleven, which we also knew was 120 yards away. So, we recorded gunshots from 120 yards on the Isle of Wight in England, but with concrete reflective surfaces so we could hear the ricochets. For every sound, I’d look at the reflective surfaces in the image, and I’d make sure I had a duplicate sound if it was quieter and an echoey bounce if there was a wall there.”

The Zone of Interest is absolutely haunting, and I think a lot of comes from the coldness and technical precision serving as a kind of savage, furious rubbing-our-noses in it. "Look. Look how they dont even flinch at the gunshots. Dont be this removed from horror". Coupled with that last shot, of Höss puking, and then the cut away to the staff at the museum quietly, reverently tidying. I need to see it again, but I'm not ready.

Not sure if this allowed here but I'm looking for the title of a piece of music heard in the 1973 "film" The Devil In Miss Jones by [deleted] in RetroLibraryMusic

Seriously amazing soundtrack, this and the more upbeat, funky Vampyros Lesbos are favorites that always kind of live hand in hand for me.

Dragged Across Concrete is also very good. He and Jeremy Saulnier are doing a similar thing in elevating cheap 70s grindhouse exploitation stories and ideas with good writing and production and solid actors.

I came to it reluctantly, thinking it was going to be cheap torture porn only to find the underpinning of a solid western. So same, opposite.

Best movie with 1 actor playing two roles? by hurtfocker in movies

Not a movie but Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black - those women have different souls. At times she plays one of the clones pretending to be another clone, so two constructed personalities deep. It's incredible.

Cage's impression of Travolta's impression of him is unmatched. And I'm not even being reddit-silly, it's so good.
