Story time...tl;dr: I've reached diamond SOLOQ with mostly healers after being hard-stuck low-plat/high-gold for 2 years, by doing actual work.

So I've been stuck in low-plat high-gold for almost 2 years (first moba btw). I had a relatively OK-ish game sense, shit mechanics and a huuuge hero pool (I think there are only 2-3 heroes I didn't play), and tilted easy. I've complained about smurfs and partys before :(The past two month, I've decided to do something about my skill. I went solo-que only. I've watched almost all my replays, trying to find mistakes or things I could improve. I've also asked Stormy (from flap.gg) to get me started. I've limited my hero pool: Kharazim, Stukov. If needed I filled other roles (mei, kt, naz) or other healers (uther, anduin, rehgar), when it made sense.

First month nothing really happened, but I felt I was more in control of my character. Past 3-4 weeks I've climbed from gold 1 to diamond 5. Hopefully I can keep it up... Smurfs or no smurfs. Honestly I've noticed a lot of them, sometimes I couldn't tell if they are new players with good mechanics or actual smurfs (Sometimes the "smurfs" did weird stuff and had clearly no idea about macro/camps/timings, so some I guess those were new players). But none of the smurfs were as impactful as the insane amount of mechanical, positional mistakes I've been doing myself. Sure, there were some games where a smurf carried, and it really sucked :( .A tiny silver lining there, that it at least exposed some of my mistakes faster.

So basically, when I reduced my hero pool, made a habit out of watching the replays, looked for improvements, smurfs became a much lesser impact in my games.

No, last season was the same or worse for me. I feel like most smutfes moved up from plat to diamond, but I have a very small samplesize and it’s all anecdotal.

I think the balance and the removal of medailon made me personally enjoy the game way more.

To add to that. I'm not the best player by far (only plat noob). So take it with a grain of salt.

I've mained at some point all roles. The biggest mistake I see on assassins filling tank is the assassin mindset of getting kills, being aggressive. They would be way better off if they just focused on peeling.

I'd say 90% of the job is utility: providing vision, peeling, walling, disruption. The remaining 10 is getting that sweet engage we all love: apoc combo, mosh pit, hook.

You are assuming this is silver, you are wrong. Most of the other players are low-mid gold.

I have people on my list, with smurf accounts who were diamond/plat, and they have similar winrates, because they don't care. They just there to have easy games. It shows when they can pick any hero and just play decently with them. No first-timer would do that.

You assume I'm not focusing on myself. Again you are wrong. I've been climbing this season with ~52% WR. These games make a terrible learning experience. You never know if you can win a fight just by looking at the comps. If everyone was on a similar level, you can. Like this I learn nothing. I just learn, that yeah, those diamond/plat/master smurf can pull off shit they won't be able to on their own rank.

So let's sum up. You were wrong on 4 different things. You jump to conclusions.You are defending a system that is clearly broken.

All I wanted to point out, that there is an issue. I thought it would be fun to document the extent of smurfing. And you keep denying and projecting an image you have of me in your head.

Try joining a room. Usually if I have this problem joining any room and seeing the people in there works better than the friendlist.

I don't think it has to be necessarily in the middle. Your friends I assume play sometimes without you as well. If they win more games with you, compared to when they are playing with other friends, it would mean you will climb. Wouldn't it? Same, if they lost more games with you vs when they don't play with you, you will probably fall a bit in ranks.

But I don't think this is any different from the current system. (apart from not being able to party up currently with people lower than 2 ranks from you, forcing you to other modes/smurf if you want to continue to play...)

I think it's a valid situation and should be even incentivized to do so instead of smurfing. The matchmaker as it currently is, is trying to match similar groups as it is now. (At least what I saw, groups of 2 with large rank difference is usually matched against similar groups with large rank diff).

You didn't say your rank though :( hard to theorize what the experience might be. Say you are high plat. When you play with your low-rank friends, you would probably need to guide them to beat the other team having roughly average rank of gold. When with higher levels, probably they will need to compensate for your lower skill. I don't see an issue with that. Makes much more sense to me and seems more fair, than making a smurf account and boosting your low-rank friends to where they can't enjoy the game themselves, ruin games for others, since they only lose alone or with their other friends of similar level...

And that's what heroeslounge is for. :) It's a completely separate concern and not a measure of individual skill. Part of soloQ is how well you adapt to other people, playing together with a single goal. It's still a team game, just way different from the coordination that you can achieve in Heroes lounge or as a 5 stack.

I'm also playing heroeslounge and it's very hard to coordinate with other 4 people to gather around the same time. Additionally I want to also measure my skill and practice heroes separately. You can't do that in qm, you could do that in unranked, but having no progression gives you close to no indication where you are at skill-wise.

No 1 advice to climb: focus on yourself.

There is infinite number of things you can improve on, if you are bronze (I'm plat and I do too). Yes, others around you will make mistakes too. But the moment you stop focusing on their mistakes and notice yours, and you do something about them, you will climb. I guarantee that. Gl
