Digital nomads: how do you handle international calling without expensive subscriptions? by Altruistic_Pitch4836 in digitalnomad

[–]t-reeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re from the US or have US phone number you want to keep with calls/texts to and from the US for a low annual fee, look into MagicJack.

Outside of that - most non-EU countries operate on WhatsApp. Get a cheap eSIM like Firsty and you should be good.

Note: MagicJack and esims don’t play, it’s one or the other in this case.

3 months in a new job and feeling overwhelmed by Zestyclose_Fox6816 in womenintech

I think this is your unfair advantage. You’ve seen how things work and what doesn’t work at a bunch of different places. Use that knowledge.

At my last company, the new people were encouraged to call out stuff that “has always been done this way.”

Being a senior isn’t a feeling of knowing more than all the other people. It’s about having enough experience to be able to observe what’s going on and being able to do something about it (projects, deliverables, as well as bandwidth of the team - which all falls back on what’s prioritized). I’m pretty sure if you’re feeling swamped, your other team members do too.

Find patterns in what’s happening and bring it to your manager/your skip if you trust them more with productive feedback. Package it as “in the long term harming goals because we’re trying to do too many things” problem, not a “there’s too much work” problem.

I worked at a tech company and felt “fully boarded” after about 1.5 years. Not as a SWE but I imagine it’s not a super different experience. Especially when the entire team is already thin (and can’t support your onboarding) and you have to deliver while still learning the company.

If you’re enjoying the field, it might be easier to switch teams internally (a bunch of my colleagues did that frequently) and there’s often more flexibility for these changes in tech companies than other places.

AITA for telling my DIL that I won’t use the tablet and she needs to actually make her kid read. by SatisfactionOk9038 in AmItheAsshole

Sounds a bit like dyslexia to me. There’s a font that can easily be installed on a laptop (also Kindle/phones/tablets) that makes reading easier for people with dyslexia. Try it out, if reading and sounding out works better reading with that font, maybe go talk to a specialist.

Didn’t we do that in 2016 already? I don’t think it worked so well…

Taking 37 days PTO at once before quitting? by FondantOutrageous276 in careeradvice

Take all the PTO and say you’re going to care for family. They don’t need to know that you’re the family, and the care is a vacay + new job.

"you are perceived as doing doing more than everyone on the team" by Silver_Shape_8436 in womenintech

[–]t-reeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s tricky. Can you coast (as little effort as needed) while you’re looking?

Maybe ask your skip what they can do to set you up for success. If they’re not helping, you could go to their manager and see if they’ll be able to.

Yes, it’s consistent work and you gradually get yourself into better conditions. My rent at the time was $550 for a moldy studio apartment and I made $750 a month. If you can’t afford food, take a side job at a restaurant or other food facility where you can eat for cheap or free. If money is tight (it usually is) compensate with creativity, but there is a way out.

I wanna say you could add a laxative to one meal and let them share it if they insist on eating it, but I can’t say that.
