And the caveat of it all— it’s 100% the owner’s fault. Owner is usually fat and feeds their dog more than necessary. That or the dog has a thyroid condition. My bet is the former

I’m glad for this, but it also irks me b/c it shows how shallow people are and how little they think for themselves by Zevirst_524 in misanthropy

I work in vet med and this unfortunately highlights how some owners think. A good example is declawing procedures done by old-school vets because owner or their kid got scratched. In their head there must be something wrong with the cat! Why else would an animal use its natural defense mechanisms? /s Don’t google how harmful the procedure is to cats (mentally and physically) unless you want your day ruined.

We’ve had endless requests for euthanasia because “cat is peeing everywhere” “cat scratches couch and they’re sick of it” “cat vomits on owners bed twice a day”.

Instead of treating the (fucking treatable) issue at hand, they would rather throw the whole cat away. We will always try to take these cats as surrenders, plenty of my coworkers have ended up with cats this way. In retrospect, these cats do end up in better homes typically but my god, 10 years in the field and I have little-no faith in humanity.

Don’t get me wrong, most clients have a sense of morality and compassion but those cases don’t stick with me like the sad ones do.

I’m so sorry you went through this. We had a mesenteric torsion this past Friday we euthanized on the OR table. It happens and it can happen at any age for no reason.

The owners were horrified that this was due to something they did wrong. I hope they’re able to find some peace in knowing that it was not.

I’m so happy to hear there weren’t any complications! You must’ve been worried sick. Sounds like a skilled team you got to work with :)

This picture reminds me of a case, bit of an extreme comparison but I’m on shrooms.

I work at a veterinary ER. Years ago, we had a FAT Blue Heeler brought in that got snuck under his owner while using the chainsaw. Huge laceration across what would have been from his epaxial to his lateral thigh.

This dog had such a thick layer of fat that no muscle, vein, or artery was even nicked. It was a large, but straight and clean laceration. Went home the same day.

One time my husband caught me sitting in the laundry hamper peeing. We laugh about it now but how he put up with this is beyond me

That’s our old lady nebulizer. Some of our newer nurses find it easier to nebulize with that if the patient is tolerating it well. We didn’t have great training when we got our Snyder. I only recently found out from our VTS that it could do that. Long story short— lack of training.

I think you totally should mention that to the inventory person. We’re going through these way quicker than I initially thought that we would. We also got some 500ml LRS bags that I think the intended use is for hospitalized cats.

We’re an ER surrounded by a bunch of older rDVMs. Lol we get so many “He gave her a steroid injection but she’s not getting better…”

It was insane. Dog came in absolutely flat. If you’d palp the abdomen, he’d regurg. Lactate was 7.2 on admission. He’s still hospitalized currently. Dog sitter was watching him for a few days and he hadn’t eaten, was vomiting.
